*Today most people live in cities. But this was not always so. About 200 years ago, only 5 out of every 100 people in the United States lived in cities. In other words 95 people out 100 lived on farms. *The farmers grew their own fruits and vegetables. They got milk from their own cows. They kept chickens and pigs. Little by little, the cities grew bigger. Many more people lived in them. *But even 100 years ago, only 35 out of every 100 people lived in cities. *The cities kept growing. More and more people left the farms. Today about 94 out of every 100 people live in cities.
