    Look at the sentences below, can you rewrite them using commas in the correct places?

    1. Alex bought an apple and two bananas and some sugar and a pineapple.

    2. Ayshah looked in the cupboard. In the cupboard was some bread and some butter and a bone and a can of dog food.

    3. Lucas had two marbles and a piece of string and a stone in his pocket.

    4. At the circus Josh saw a clown and a lion and a juggler and a lot of other things.

    5. Jane had forgotten the washing powder and the peanuts and the yoghurts.

    6. There were sweets and presents and toys in the sack.

    7. Lions and tigers and monkeys and penguins and elephants live at the zoo.

    8. George got his bat and ball. He put it in his bag along with his trainers and his shorts and his T-shirt.

    Extra- Can you write a short paragraph which lists things you have done over the last couple of weeks. Make sure you include commas when listing things. Try to expand your sentences and make them exciting or engaging.

  • Activity 3- Adverbial Phrases

    Use adverbial phrases to modify these clauses:

    1. Chang whacked the ball ________________________ .

    Choose a main clause, and add detail using at least one adverbial phrase from the table above. Shade each part of the sentence in the correct colour.

  • Remember: • Phrases can go before or after the main clause • Make sure your sentence makes sense. • Add a capital letter and a full stop. • Put a comma after each phrase and the main clause (except the

    last one – that’s where the full stop goes!) Here is an example: Later on, the children were lost, shaking with terror, in the dark forest. Challenge! Make up your own adverbial phrases to go with one of the main clauses above. Make sure you shade them the correct colour!

  • Activity 4- Commas in front of fronted adverbials

    An adverbial is a word or phrase which gives us additional information about the time, place or manner of the verb.

    Underline the verb in red and the adverbial in purple.

    Next, change the sentences around so that the adverbial comes before the verb, to make a fronted adverbial.

    Make sure you add the comma in the correct place.

    1) We sat on the coach.

    2) People were chattering as we arrived at the gates.

    3) We visited Butterfly Paradise first of all.

    4) I tiptoed into the dark entrance of the reptile house.

    Challenge

    Create two more sentences of your own to describe the trip to the zoo. They must use fronted adverbials. Don’t forget to include the commas after the fronted adverbial!

  • Activity 5 – Fronted adverbials

    Write about a school trip you have been or would like to go on. Describe the time, frequency, place, manner and degree. Try to use at least five sentences which have fronted adverbs. You could use some of the fronted adverbials from the table on the next page.

    Top tip * Don’t forget to use commas after the fronted adverbials!

  • Activity 6- Identify the expanded noun phrase with prepositional language in the sentences below.

    1. The brightly-coloured parrot flew through the canopy.

    2. After his lunch, Harold ate a sweet, delicious chocolate brownie.

    3. Under the waves, the stripy fish swam quickly through the reef.

    4. In a forest clearing, a dark, mysterious jaguar sauntered by the water.

    5. “Pass me the blue shoes please,” Mum asked Sophia.

    6. As John sat at the bus stop, he saw three large, black cars go past.

    Can you write some expanded noun phrases to describe the images below? CHALLENGE: Can you write some expanded noun phrases which also include fronted adverbials?

  • Activity 7- Short and long sentences

    1. Take a picture or look at an image, write 6 sentences about this picture using only 6 words in each sentence.

    2. Write the passage again using the same 6 sentences, however expand them by using 10-20 words.

    3. Write the passage a third time, this time using a minimum of 25 words for each sentence.

    4. Finally, re-write the sentence a fourth time, using a combination of the sentence lengths.

  • Activity 8- Subordinate clauses In each of the sentences below, underline the subordinate clause and circle the subordinating conjunction. 1. After John caught the fish, Kelly caught one also. 2. The prince and his knights rode into the valley because the dragon had burned the village. 3. If Louise goes to the store, she will be late for the movie. 4. I like to eat lunch outside when the sun is shining. 5. The ball bounced into the hole where Casey and Robert could not reach it. 6. Since his car broke down, Mr. Evans rides the bus to work. 7. In Paris, the French boy played on the bridge until his mother called him home. 8. While the family slept, the mouse ran through the kitchen and ate the bread. Using the conjunction wheel to support you, write some complex sentences. Don’t forget to include the punctuation in the correct place.

  • Activity 9- Causal conjunctions

    Choose a causal conjunction to complete these sentences:
