2 ABOUT ACTIVITIES WEEK

Activities Week runs from Monday 8 July to Friday 12 July 2019.

Some activities involve residential trips. Others are more local, involving a series of day activities (some, or all, of which may be school-based).

Students in Years 7 – 9 are asked to choose four activity packages from this booklet, in order of preference. In addition to these choices students will also take part in Sports Day, Sex and Relationships Education and our annual tip to Thorpe Park.

We will make every attempt to ensure that students get their first choice option. However, if activities are oversubscribed priority will be given to those who submitted their forms by the deadline.

Costs depend, to some extent, on the numbers of students taking up places on each activity and have not yet been finalised, but the prices shown are intended to be a maximum. Final costs will be given once all places have been allocated.

All payments are to be made via ParentPay. Parents will be given details of payment deadlines when activity places are confirmed, and students will not be able to participate in activities unless full payment has been made.

Choose four activities (1 being your first choice) using the Activities Week Choices Form at the back. When you have completed the form, hand it in to reception from Monday 1st April 2019. The deadline for forms is Wednesday 3rd April 2019. Any students who miss this deadline will be allocated a cost free activity.

Parents and students should be aware that poor behaviour could result in permission to participate in some activities being denied.

Coastal Walking in Dorset

Visit the stunning and geographically-significant Jurassic Coast in Dorset, the home of well-known coastal landforms such as Old Harry Rocks, Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove. We will stay in Swanage and walk over the hills to Old Harry Rocks, where the change to headlands over time is clearly visible with the most famous cave, arch, stack, stump formation in the UK. On the second day, we will take a local coach to Lulworth Cove, which is a stunning rounded cove on a concordant coastline. From there, we will take a vigorous hike up the cliff path to a perfect arch at Durdle Door. We will be staying in dormitory accommodation with all meals catered for us. Prepare to be physically challenged as you appreciate the natural beauty of the UK’s expansive coastline.

We are going to be surfing in Croyde, North Devon, the UK home of surfing. With accommodation close to the beach, we will wake up to the sounds of the sea and be the first in the waves every day. Day 1: We arrive by coach in the afternoon and get straight into the sea for our first surfing lesson together – there is one instructor for every eight of us so we are guaranteed to be up and surfing by the end of session one. We then head back to the hostel where we are staying and have our first evening meal together before an evening quiz. Day 2: Up early, breakfast together in the hostel then into the surf for our first full morning session. This time we should really be carving up the sea; full turns and making left and right breakers with ease. Back up for lunch in the hostel and then a coasteering session in the afternoon. This is rock climbing and rock jumping led by fully qualified professionals. Then dinner followed by travelling home by coach.

A fantastic opportunity to explore Disneyland Paris. Enjoy all the magic that Disney has to offer with a one night stay in Paris. Go thrill seeking on the rides or become immersed in your favorite Disney stories and end the day with fireworks at the castle.

The art offer will be an opportunity to experience art in a completely new way! You will have the opportunity to make your own canvas to take home and create a large graffiti mural as a group to be displayed at school! You will explore Brick Lane’s famous street art, as well as visiting one of London’s famous art galleries to see an exhibition. You will learn how to take good quality photos that can be used to make art, something any artist or designer needs to learn so they can develop their own practice; you’ll become the envy of your Instagram followers with these skills!

Are you inquisitive? Do you think outside the box to problem solve? If you answered yes to these questions, you’re a scientist! Join the Science Team as we visit Sites of Scientific Interest and see how science plays a role in your everyday life.

Yoga and Swimming

Learn the basics of yoga to improve your strength, flexibility and relaxation. Then relax with a swim in London Fields Lido. Yoga and swimming are great sports for people at all levels of fitness. You will need to have a good level of swimming ability as swimming will be on a recreational basis in some of London’s most exciting ‘wild swimming’ locations.

Learn rope-climbing, bouldering and abseiling at Mile End Climbing Wall, under the expert tuition of an instructor. Suitable for all abilities, from enthusiastic beginner to experienced climber – you will be climbing to great heights! For the beginner rock climber or those with just a little experience. You will learn the fundamentals of movement and balance, to the more technical aspects of anchors and abseiling, this climbing course covers all the basics for you to start experiencing rock climbing on your own.

Thames Walk and Gallery Visits

Join in if you love drawing, architecture and art! Get inspired by London like many of the most successful artists have over the centuries. We will take a scenic route along the Thames sketching the famous iconic skyline and architecture of London; highlights will include drawing St. Paul’s Cathedral, The Globe Theatre and the Millennium Bridge. To transport us to imaginative dimensions we will also visit exhibitions at the Tate Modern and Somerset House to see artwork by world-renowned artists, designers and crafters. We will enjoy lunch by the river and a finish the day with a leisurely stroll along the Thames Walk, sketching on the way!

Students will have the opportunity to have skiing lessons at the Snow Centre (Hemel Hempstead) with Ski Instructors for a whole day. They will have two 90 minute lessons which will allow them to learn how to ski and be having fun on the slopes in no time! Between their two sessions they will also have lunch provided, where they can watch the skiers come past!

Music and Recording Masterclass

Students will be composing and creating their own music using software. They will receive one to one guidance to help them develop ideas, and depending on the interests and skills of the students, activities might include learning about different recording techniques and recording live instruments and vocals.

Olympic BMX Training

Students will have the opportunity to go BMXing at the Olympic Park. They will participate in two 1 hour sessions, with all equipment being included in the cost. Students will learn different tricks, as well as have the opportunity to go BMXing around the track used at the London 2012 Olympics.

Enjoy exploring Turkish and Kurdish Culture through, music, dancing, food and film. Learn and celebrate both the differences and similarities both cultures have to offer.

Students will have the opportunity to take part in a specialist workshop in school and a Great British Bake Off style competition for you to show off your skills! Alternatively, students could choice to participate in a fine dining competition to see who can serve up some Michelin star standard cuisine.

Gain entry to the famous Wimbledon Tennis Championships with a grounds pass for the day. Enjoy some world class tennis while eating strawberries and cream on ‘Murray Mound’ or ‘Henman Hill’ (depending on who you ask!).

Creating a London blog about seeing bits of ‘Hidden London’ or cheap days out. Students will go on various site visits around London taking photos and videos of what they see. Students will create either vlogs or a blog based on their experiences and review the sites, guiding other students to activities they may be interested in over the summer.

Mindfulness Workshop

Do you sometimes feel stressed or overwhelmed by difficult situations? Do you wish you had a quiet space to enjoy or could learn how to stay calm under pressure? The Mindfulness Workshop is offering the chance to learn practical techniques to reduce anxiety and calm nerves, as well as stress-relieving activities including origami, mini-sculptures and beautiful pages to colour however you like. Come along and enjoy some important relaxation time while learning vital skills for managing emotions and keeping your cool.

Cross-stitch is a form of sewing and a popular form of counted-thread embroidery in which X-shaped stitches in a tiled, raster-like pattern are used to form a picture. Have a go at this relaxing and creative activity through a range of different patterns and take your creations home.

Do you like competitive and team based computer games? Look no further - Dota 2 is one of the biggest esports out there today, with its annual event, “The International” attracting millions of viewers and the most recent a total prize pool of over $25 million! You’ll learn the ins and outs from experienced players, watch some of the classic moments and form teams to play against each other to see who can truly defend their ancient. Keep your fingers twitchy and your mouse hand fast – the game that started the idea of the MOBA is bigger than ever!


Philosophical Thinking

This one day event will explore philosophy and philosophical ideas at two locations in London. There will be a visit and discussion at a philosophy faculty of a university in the morning, followed by a visit to the Enlightenment Hall at the British university for a guided tour on how philosophy has changed over time.

This two day course will explore the exciting world of a career in football. On the first day, you will visit a professional football club and be given a bespoke tour around their facilities. You will have the opportunity to watch a training session and take part in a second session run by professional coaches. On the second day, you will visit a second club and take place in a careers workshop with sports journalists, physiotherapists, agents and analysts who will give an interactive session about how to work towards a career in football.

Launch Pad Enterprise

Launch Pad is a fast paced, engaging enterprise challenge which provides an introduction to employability skills. You will work alongside inspiring Business Volunteers who support you to discover more about yourself and develop key skills which are valued in the workplace. Through a series of hands on, fun activities you will work in teams on the early stages of launching a fledgling business, balancing a budget as well as creating a brand identity and marketing strategy.


Skateboarding and Rollerblading

This is a skate boarding and roller skating session at the Nike Skateboarding Facility Bay 66. Whether you have never tried skateboarding or roller skating before, or you are an expert, join us to learn everything from the basics, to carving and dropping in on the giant bowl. We will start with basics of stance, power, speed and stopping, and then move on to how to get speed on the ramps and banks of the skatepark. We will spend a full day at the park, learning how to approach a wide variety of obstacles, and discuss skatepark etiquette. You will then have the afternoon to build on what you have learned, and some free time to shred.

CSI Crime Investigation

Take part in a realistic crime investigation. You will be presented with a crime scene in the morning. Use scientific methods such as finger printing and DNA sampling to deduce who the murder is!


Reading Group

Lose yourself in a good book. Take your pick of a variety of texts and take part in a COLAI book club. You will get the chance to enjoy the pleasure of reading as well as share your ideas and thought on the story with others.

Helivan Experience

Discover the various roles in an Air Ambulance team (pilot, doctor, paramedic, fire crew as well as our charity team). The Helivan hosts a replica of the interior of London’s Air Ambulance aircraft and provides a unique way to discover this fascinating job. Using Helimed, you can take on the roles of a London's Air Ambulance Pilot, Paramedic or Doctor. Complete life-saving missions, based on real-life scenarios, in a race against time.
