Spices and herbs are part of plants we use in cooking to add flavour, aroma or

colour to our food. In the ancient world, men have travelled/travelled/are

travelling to Asia to bring spices to the markets of Europe. In fact, the spice

trade will be/is/have been one of the oldest known to man and it is influencing/had

influenced/has influenced the course of history. Men like Maguellan were setting

off/had set off/set off on voyages of discovery in order to reach the spice lands.

Important cities like Venice and Rome traded in spices, but by the 20th century,

London had become/has become/will have become the centre of the spice trade.

Herbs and spices have a wide variety of uses. Today almost every recipe is

including/includes/has included some kind of herb or spice to flavour our food.

Herbs and spices have become/are becoming/became an important part in our

diet. Nowadays, doctors will examine/will have examined/are examining the uses

of herbs and spices in the treatment of disease. Cosmetics companies have been

advertising/are advertising/advertised the herbs in their creams and shampoos

for years-the idea is that the addition of herbs will make/is making/have made us

to look better than ever before. Herbs and spices have always been part of our
