Words from the ChairDear friends, 2017 has started with a rush and a roar! I hope that all of you managed to have some quality time to yourselves over the holiday period. Some mistaken people think that retirement is just one long holiday but I am sure some of you would

put them straight about that! We do live in a very caring community and because of that people give up precious time for the good of other people. If you are one of those – THANK YOU.

Recently we had a visit from the Chief Executive Officer of Age Concern NZ, Stephanie Clare. Stephanie came especially from Wellington to meet our Board and to spend some quality time with our Manager, Sue Tilby. I believe she was very impressed with what we achieve here in the Nelson/Tasman branch. During her visit Stephanie shared with us that Peter Oettli the national President of Age Concern NZ has been unwell. Peter has to undergo some vigorous treatment yet but we wish him well and a speedy recovery.

Peter was due to join Stephanie for the visit to our branch and together they were to speak about the modernisation of Age Concern NZ. Stephanie stressed that she would rather talk about ‘Future Proofing’ as there was much in what we do which is great and needs to be protected. At the bottom line Age Concern exists for YOU and for the older persons of our community. Ours is a charter to CARE and to support those going through testing times and nothing will change us from this course.

Recently fellow board member Dave Ashcroft and I represented our Board at a meeting in Christchurch with some of the governors from the top of the South Island. We are looking to learn from each other and to support any branches going through testing times. As the future proofing debate continues at the Conference and AGM in March we want to show a united front and demonstrate the quality of work here in the South Island.

    Best wishes,

Charles Tyrrell QSOChair of the Board of Age Concern Nelson Tasman Inc.

Meet the staffManager, Sue Tilby (Justice of the Peace)2016 was a great year for Age Concern Nelson Tasman, and we are looking forward to working hard this year and continuing to provide much-needed and valuable support

to our local 65+ population. We’ve had a great response recently to a call for more volunteers for our visiting service, and without this community effort we wouldn’t be able to do much of what we do.

Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention Advisor, Mal Drummond

With a growing population of retired citizens in the district, the role of an Elder Abuse and Neglect advisor is as important as ever. Older people can find themselves in a vulnerable situation quite suddenly through no fault of their own, so it is important that

there is a service available to help ensure that those people are not put at further risk of abuse or neglect.Mal can be contacted at the office to provide advice and support to individuals and their families.

Accredited Visitor Service Coordinator, Registered Social Worker, Susan Arrowsmith

Susan coordinates the Accredited Visitor Service, matching clients and volunteer visitors. We recognise that many older people experience loneliness and isolation and that this seriously affects their wellbeing. Susan’s role involves recruiting, screening and training volunteers who then

visit weekly to provide companionship to these people. This service has recently expanded into the Motueka and Golden Bay regions.

Funding and Community Support, Caroline Budge Caroline works in a role that covers fundraising, event organising and marketing & communications. We recognise the value in encouraging positive and active ageing, and are delighted to be bringing more fun events for the 65+ population in the region.

Driving Miss Daisy Outings will add a spark to your week! We hope you enjoyed the festive season and are looking forward to a busy fun-filled year ahead. Well, it certainly will be if you join us on a Driving Miss Daisy Outing!

At Driving Miss Daisy we can help with a lot more than simply driving you to appointments, or getting you from A to B. Soon after launching our service in 2009 we discovered that our clients wanted more than just the practical service that we offered – they wanted to continue with social activities, meeting people and having fun. So, we decided to add Outings to our service offering, and it is now one of our most popular and appreciated services.

If you have an outing that you’d like to organise we can create a tailor made experience for you. Perhaps you might like a trip down memory lane to, or a visit to a particular art exhibition or movie. Other quintessential outings might be enjoying an ice cream at the beach, a walk through a botanic garden or enjoy a local rugby game. You might even like to round out the experience with coffee or a meal at a café.

Many of our clients gather together a friend or two to share the experience – there’s always plenty of fun to be had!

Driving Miss Daisy also regularly organises Outings for individuals to join – if you’re interested in hearing about our upcoming Outings we’d love to hear from you. You’ll have a wonderful time and these Outings are a fantastic way to meet new people.

Driving Miss Daisy is committed to helping our clients get out and about, so you can live life to the full and enjoy every moment. Remember that many of our franchise owners have fully equipped Wheelchair Vehicles, and all our vehicles can fit a fold down walker or wheelchair which is no problem at all. If you have an Outing you’d like us to co-ordinate for you please call us today to discuss – we look forward to seeing you soon.

Give A LittleThanks for helping us make Christmas a bit brighter for our older people.

One of the nicest jobs in the year is our annual Give A Little campaign, which we run in the lead-up to Christmas. We ask for donations of foods, toiletries and other useful items that we then distribute in care packages to many of our clients.

In 2016, we were able to make up and distribute nearly 40 care packages to many people in the community as a result of hugely generous donations by the public.

Pictured here is Norm, who was delighted with the box, and very grateful for the kindness shown towards him. On behalf of everyone we could help, we’d like to extend a very big thank you.

Positive Ageing ExpoPlanning is now in the final stages for this year’s annual Positive Ageing Expo, held at the Headingly Centre just outside Richmond, and it promises to have something for everyone!

The event is now in its ninth year, and with over 2000 people attending 2016’s event, it’s proving a popular opportunity to get information to ensure we all make the most of our senior years.

There will be over 70 stall holders at this year’s Expo, alongside demonstrations, have-a-go activities and the opportunity for some health checks. The fabulous Off Your Rockers choir will also be performing a set, starting at 10.30am.

During the day there will also be several talks by guest speakers and experts on topics such as elder abuse, falls prevention and warming your home.

The Expo takes place on Friday 31st March between 10am and 3pm at the Headingly Centre, Lower Queen Street, Richmond. Free entry and transport is available from Sundial Square in Richmond every half hour from 9.30am until 2pm.

The Positive Ageing Expo is a collaboration between Tasman District Council, Nelson City Council, Positive Ageing Forum, Age Concern and the Ministry of Social Development.

When it’s time to say a final farewell to someone you love, to celebrate a life well lived and to grieve for a loss, there is no set formula. Every funeral is different and reflects the style and character of the families involved. Andrew Mason, General Manager of Marsden House says a funeral is an occasion to create memories for the living and it takes skill and focus.

“Families usually have lot to think about in a very short time,” he says, “so we’ll sit with them, listen and give professional guidance so they can create the funeral they want.”

Andrew says the team at Marsden House will care for your loved one, guide you through the legal requirements, and take the time to ensure everyone’s wishes are heard.

“The funeral is for the living – it’s for family and friends, they are the ones in need and the ones who will carry the memories with them.”

Ellie & Beth - a friendship for life

We love sharing stories of the lovely friendships that come about because of our Accredited Visitor Service (AVS), which matches volunteers with people looking for more company.

Ellie and Beth were matched up with us over a year ago, after Ellie heard Manager Sue Tilby give a talk on the work that Age Concern does. Encouraged to join as a volunteer visitor, Ellie says she just loves it. ‘Initially I thought I was just doing it out of kindness to the community, but I have had far more from it, and learn so much from Beth than I ever thought I would. It’s just been great - she’s a mine of information and I’m always asking her things!’

Ellie and Beth are both in their 80s and have lots in common, with Ellie saying their families have got to know each other as well as just the two of them. She adds: ‘My family know and respect the fact that Thursday is my day with Beth, no matter what, and nothing can interfere with that! It’s just a wonderful way to meet people and give something back. I think it’s a wonderful service and more people should use it. When you’re home alone it can be a very long day and to have some companionship is just great.’

Beth agrees, saying her visits from Ellie are ‘Wonderful. It’s a real true friendship and real company.’

We’re on the hunt for more volunteers for our service. If you know anyone who’d be interested, or you’d like to get involved yourself, why not call Susan Arrowsmith on (03) 544 7624 or email her at: [email protected]

Keeping active this summerWe’re very excited to be running our first-ever Summer Activity Programme at the moment, offering older people the opportunity to get outdoors and keep active in a fun, relaxing environment.

Age Concern, in conjunction with Nelson City Council, is organising and running the events between the middle of February and the end of March.

The programme offers:• Half Marathon Challenge - Walk a few kilometres in 6 different sessions in 3 locations over a 6-week period and notch up a half marathon! • 5 Tai Chi sessions in different parks with support from the Nelson Taoist Tai Chi Society.• 3 Sing-a-long in the Park sessions - come along and join in with a Nelson choir. No singing experience necessary!• 3 Heritage or Edible Walks - find out more about Miyazu Gardens, Isel Park and the Orphanage Stream.• 3 Disc Golf sessions - run at the specialised course at Isel Park, this is an easy to learn activity.

Age Concern is very keen to encourage people to keep active as they age, as research increasingly shows the benefits it has on the ageing body.

Nelson resident and Emeritus Professor from the University of Waikato, Bevan Grant, says any activity is good, it doesn’t have to be strenuous or beyond your capabilities.

The rewards can be physical, social and/or psychological and provide a great sense of self-

satisfaction. ‘Even though you can never be young again, being regularly active could impede the rate of decline in body function. This positively effects how you go about your day-to-day activities as well as help protect your independence, wellbeing and quality of life,’ says Bevan.

If you’d like to take part in any of our activities, please come along and have a go - we’d love to see you there! All activities are free. For more information, call (03) 544 7624 or email:[email protected]

Celebrating LivesSharing amazing life stories from Nelson’s older peoplePam Biss is one of life’s doers - taking everything in her stride, getting things done when they need to be, and never shying away from the chance of an adventure. Here we tell you the highlights of her life, from a childhood in rural New Zealand, a lifetime working with horses, to sailing around the world for six years. Pam is now in her seventies and has recently become a client through our Carer Relief service, but a few conversations with her family revealed a fascinating story that we wanted to share. Born in Waipukurau in Central Hawkes Bay, Pam’s father Harry Dean was a farmer who spent the early years of Pam’s life as a hardened veteran of 88 flying missions in the Pacific War in World War II. At the end of the war he was seconded to the UK to help write the history of New Zealand’s participation in South East Asia, and so the family upped sticks and moved to a war-ravaged England. There Pam and her sister went to a primary school - which she recalls as being quite formal and in stark contrast to the small local school in Porangahau. But the English children seemed to enjoy her kiwi accent and ponytails! Her father in the meantime worked on New Zealand’s war history, and also wrote a book of his own experiences, My Pacific Star, which was published in October 2016 by Austin Macauley in the UK. On returning to Porangahau, Pam’s mother ran the farm while Harry was seconded by the Air Force to some overseas post-war postings. Pam loved riding ponies and became an adept and carefree rider with many successful Pony Club activities. In 1958

she was the first winner of the dressage trophy in the Dorothy Campbell competition at the New Zealand Pony Club championships which had just commenced, ‘eventing’ being a new equestrian sport introduced to New Zealand. At a young age, as was the norm in those years, Pam set off for boarding school at St Matthews Collegiate in Masterton where she thrived and ended up head of boarding in her final year. She had inherited her parents’ literary genes and went on to Victoria University with a BA in History and English. Pam had endless energy and so started the next stage of her life, getting married and producing five children - all girls - as well as continuing her childhood sport of horse riding and competing. She was also a competent gardener and established a wonderful garden at her home just out of Martinborough. She loved bringing up her children and her rule was they came first, but closely followed by her keenness on hunting to hounds, firstly in Hawkes Bay, and then subsequently for many years in the Wairarapa. She was known for throwing caution to the wind by horseback across country and won the Wairarapa Hunt Club’s Point to Point race seven times, setting a long standing record in the process. Pony riding was a family activity and all her children rode competitively.Feisty by nature, Pam liked to get things done, and this was ably demonstrated when she and her family moved to the west of Masterton in 1975. Her younger children walked or biked to their local primary school, about 4 kilometres away, and she quickly became concerned with the stock trucks, on their way to Waingawa freezing works, who were driving along their road, essentially taking a shortcut. It wasn’t suited to large trucks and with the children heading to and from school, she was determined to get them off their road. And so it was that she gamely stood in the middle of the road waving her apron each morning as the children departed for school and stopped each truck. She then asked each driver to never come that way again, quickly earning a reputation among the truckies as the ‘mad lady of Kibblewhite road’. Any repeat offenders were given a more colourful dressing down. She then rang the chair of the local county council, and the trucking firms, each morning and told them the trucks were still coming. Her efforts did not cease even when her leg was broken by a horse kick. She simply stood in the middle of the road and waved her crutches!

Finally, the council succumbed and the entrance to Kibblewhite Road was realigned in a gentle curve so that it was difficult for trucks to execute the manoeuvre necessary to enter the road. ‘Pam’s curve’ solved the problem and Kibblewhite Road became the quieter lane it now is.In the late 1980s and early 1990s Pam was a freelance reporter for the Wairarapa Times Age reporting on equestrian activities in the area. It was a time when Waiarapa riders were doing very well on the national and international stage, and Pam really enjoyed the time. On moving to Martinborough Pam also spent some years as a casual worker on the new vineyards being established in the area.A new stage in her life arrived when her youngest daughter finished school, and travel beckoned. Pam and her husband had sailed a small 28 foot yacht on holidays with the children out of Mana, Wellington, and decided to upgrade to a slightly larger 39 foot yacht, which they then sailed out of Mana headed for Australia. Upon reaching Australia they took stock of the situation, and ventured onwards around the World over six years and visited 34 Countries. They sailed through Asia, the Middle East, the Red Sea, the Mediterranean, across the Atlantic, and via Suez across the Pacific back to New Zealand. The couple had a ‘two hours on, two hours off’ system of keeping watch in all weathers, which Pam says made ‘getting up to crying babies in the night pale into insignificance!’ Pam chronicled the voyage in a personal series of diaries and drawings which were subsequently edited upon her return to New Zealand and became her book Pam’s Journal, available

through Amazon Books. At the beginning of her book is a quote:Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So, throw off the bow lines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, dream, discover.Mark Twain. This quote perhaps best summarises Pam’s life, she thrived on new things, had lots of courage, and always ‘soldiered on’, as her parents used to say. She has developed dementia for some years now and lives with her husband in Nelson where she struggles with some of her memories, but still just deals with things as they happen. One of her children, Sally, remembers her mother: ‘Incredibly from five daughters I am the only one to produce grandchildren. . . known to them as Granny Pammy, she was fabulous with our kids and they loved her coming to stay. They remember her drawing funny pictures, reading stories with funny voices, cooking yummy food, trying to improve their table manners, broadening their minds with tales of her ocean voyages and childhood days of riding her pony to school, generally being the kind, caring, fun, hardworking always there for a cuddle Mum and Grandmother she was. I am sad now coming into their teenage years they cannot benefit from her wise words, sense of fun and adventure and her ability to always make you feel better when things do not seem so great.’Age Concern has arranged for two carers who provide respite care for Pam’s husband twice a week, and she is always happy to see them and very grateful for their kindness to her.

What you told usWe’ve been delighted with the great response we had to the survey we included in the last issue of our magazine.

Lots of you put pen to paper to let us know what you thought about our magazine, the services we offer, and the kinds of things you’d like to see locally. We appreciate hugely that so many of you did as it helps us understand how effective we are and what we can do to ensure older people in the region are being best cared for.

There were a few issues that stood out from many of the answers people gave, particularly in response to why people are unable to come to Age Concern events, and also what you see as the main issues facing older people.

These were:• A lack of ability to get out and about because of either a lack of transport, or health reasons, and

    • Loneliness and isolation

Other issues highlighted included: cost of accessing health services, affordable housing, socialising opportunities and accessing the arts.

These are issues we’re very aware of locally and we will be taking this into account when we’re planning for the year and looking at our areas of priority.

We’ll take on board your suggestions - and for those of you who enjoy stretching your brains, you’ll see we’ve included a puzzle on page 16.

Finally, we did promise a voucher to one of the respondents of the survey, and that lucky winner was Gerda Siegenthaler. Well done Gerda, and many thanks to everyone who took the time to respond.
