Live the life you’ve always wanted at

There is a certain magic about living in a waterfront community. You’re keenly aware of nature and all its myriad moods, but more than anything, you gain a sense of inner peace. Living at Shelter Cove gives you all this, plus more.

Shelter Cove is a gated community that assures your privacy and security with controlled access. What’s more, the on site amenities are stunning. Consider your own private marina, a 5,000+ sq. ft. exclusive clubhouse, exquisite swimming pool, planned walking trails, residents’ gardens and boat and RV storage, with Selkirk Provincial Park immediately adjacent to the community.

But that isn’t all. Shelter Cove’s homes are exceptionally affordable with prices starting from $163,000, while leasehold tenure saves you the capital outlay of a serviced building lot. It’s a smart way to live the lifestyle many others only dream about.

Nearby amenities include shopping, quality healthcare, golf courses, fine dining establishments, orchards, wineries and more.

Come visit Shelter Cove on the shores of Lake Erie. Meet your future neighbours and find out just how wonderful your life can be this close to nature.

[EDITOR’S MESSAGE]

I HAVE ALWAYS been a late bloomer. So the fact that I only picked up my first smartphone at the beginning of this year, is no surprise to me. But it is to so many who have become quite attached to these little parasites of virtue that they find it unimaginable how someone could forsake the technology for so long.

Until the Samsung Note 4, the phone I had on standby for emergencies was a five-year-old Doro, chosen for the big numbers. Now it’s been relegated to alarm-clock status.

I’m in the process of learning to do what is probably most mundane to readers everywhere – seek out apps that I might find useful. I admit that many are not entirely frivolous as I first expected.

It’s no surprise that music, banking, traffic, weather, and food tracking apps are popular. A friend’s daughter connects with her using Snapchat. And JoAnn McHardy, ACTIVE LIFE’s art director, turned me onto OverDrive. Card-carrying library members can make use of the extensive selection of eBooks and audio books – for free.

But I am also taking a page out of Renee Fisher’s Life in the Boomer Lane blog. Of the apps she is not subscribing to, Fisher says, “Health apps telling you how many calories you are consuming, how many steps you are walking, how many beats your heart is beating, how high your blood pressure is and how many brain cells you are losing per minute as you go about your day. The answer to the last item is ‘a lot.’ You seriously don’t want all this information.”

As a safeguard against the possibility I might become too smitten with the device, I will adapt the W.A.I.T. acronym I read about recently: Why Am I Talking? Only I will ask of myself, Why Am I Texting? Because I can see where I might become a bit overzealous in that area, especially with the jazzy little pen that came with the Note 4. Tap, tap, tap.....

Remember that we “spring ahead” by 1 hour when Daylight Savings Time begins on March 13!

TAX SEASON IS HERE and the deadline to file your return is fast approaching. This year your indi-vidual 2015 tax return is due by April 30, at midnight. If you owe money to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) you must file by that date to avoid any penalties. Even if you don’t owe, it’s a good idea to file on time so there’s no delay receiving any government benefits like the guaranteed income supplement, old age security and the GST/HST credit. If you’ve been putting it off, here are some tips to get you started.

If you owe moneyGet it done. The CRA starts charging you interest on that money the day after the deadline expires. The CRA website states, “If you have a balance owing for 2015, we charge compound daily interest starting May 1, 2016, on any unpaid amounts owing for 2015.” Right now the penalty on overdue taxes is 5 percent of the balance owing, plus 1 percent of your balance owing for each full month your return is late, to a maximum of 12 months.

File no matter whatIn 2015, every worker in Canada paid no tax on the first $11,327 earned. This is referred to as a basic personal amount. But if you earned more you have to pay some income tax. The CRA says, “Even if you cannot pay your full balance owing on or before April 30, 2016, you can avoid the late-filing penalty by filing your return on time.” So even if you have to pay

interest, you can avoid the heftier late-penalty charge by just getting your paperwork in to the CRA. This applies for anyone with zero income as well; file your return in order to take advantage of all government tax credits due to you.

Tax incentivesThere were a number of tax incentives, or what some call “tax breaks,” that were available for the 2015 tax year. If you have children under the age of 18, you can take advantage of income splitting, where the higher-earning spouse can transfer up to $50,000 in income to the lower earner, resulting in a maximum credit of $2,000. Pension-splitting is still available to seniors as well.

Also, Ontarians can take advantage of the Healthy Homes Renovation Tax Credit where you could get back up to $1,500 if you renovated your home to make it more accessible in 2015.

Medical expensesIf you have specific medical needs and part of your ongoing care is not covered by your government health insurance, you may be able to claim it as a medical expense on your 2015 return. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has a list of expenses that are eligible: everything from therapy to vitamins to air purifiers. If it’s medically required, you may be able to claim the expense. Refer to the CRA website for the complete list and talk to your tax professional.

Don’t stress over receiptsIt is now free and (in my opinion) much easier to file your tax return online. This means there is no need to attach receipts to your return. But that doesn’t mean you can discard them. For up to six years, the CRA can ask for receipts, supporting documents, income tax records and tax forms, to prove the information you put on your return is correct. Make sure you keep the original copy of any receipt or document you are using to reduce your total income tax paid.

Lots of help availableDon’t panic: there is still plenty of time to get your tax return filed on time. The CRA is a great resource to answer any of your questions. In addition, at this time of year, most banks and tax preparation firms are holding extended hours in order to deal with the tax filing procrastinators. n

Colleen JonesAuthentic on every level: a true champion of mind, body and spirit BY CECE M. SCOTT

Inspirational quotes with aspirational trimmings are the mantra-centric engines that ignite and power every facet of Nova Scotia’s Colleen Jones, curler extraordinaire. Jones, 56, a member of the Canadian

Curling Hall of Fame, is a six-time Tournament of Hearts champion, two-time winning skip at the Worlds, a 29-year CBC broadcast journalist and a two-time author, including Throwing Rocks At Houses: My Life In And Out Of Curling (Viking, October 2015).

When Jones was 19 she won her first provincial championship. At 22, she was the youngest skip ever to win the national Canada Curling cup championship; a win that called for an inordinately intense focus at such a young age.

“I was a bundle of nerves, not sleeping, not able to eat. I was getting sick to my stomach before games. In 1982, nobody was embracing meditation or yoga or psychology, which is funny, because now all of that is a part of my daily life. Back then I just muddled through the pressure I was under. We didn’t even know what we didn’t know. We were in uncharted territory.”

And while it was all about counting on the youth factor for game play advantage in the 1980s, Jones says it is now all about the benefits garnered from years of playing experience. “Am I as good now as I was at 22 or at 49? It is a tough thing to measure, but I think I am and I believe I am. I have 35 years of experience behind me that tells me what to do and how to do it.”

Jones comes from an out-size down-east family of nine kids. She is fifth on the sibling ladder of eight girls and one boy. At an early age Jones learned to march to the beat of her own drum in order to stand out in her estrogen-strong family. And because the family was so child-robust, the game of curling became a popular choice for Colleen’s mom, Anne, who relished

the fact that curling took her daughters out of the house for a good chunk of the day, every Saturday. Several of Jones’ sisters played on the same teams with Jones, who was more often than not team skip.

Jones, an A-type, multi-tasking personality who thrives on the pressure to win, equates all the mental and physical preparation around curling as automatic as brushing her teeth. However, life changed dramatically on December 10, 2010, when a serious health crisis ripped through Jones’ life.

In the summer of that year, Jones, 51, had decided to come out of retirement and return to competitive curling, with an eye to qualifying for the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Immersed in curling in one form or another, Jones was at the rink setting up drills for her son Luke’s junior curling practice that Saturday afternoon when she was hit with an overwhelming wave of dizziness and nausea.

An emergency trip to the hospital, and several tests later, Jones was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis. “Waking up the next morning was the thrill of a lifetime,” Jones says. “I had this amazing epiphany— to be thankful that I survived, that I was well. I was really ready to carpe diem after that!

“I realized I was going through life with one big list, a steady stream of the things I needed to get done in a day. Up to that point, I felt if I didn’t get them done the world would come crashing down.”

The message was crystal clear for Jones: give up all the A-personality, multi-tasking lists, tasks and projects and, instead, immerse herself in the stuff she loved. “I have a bracelet on my arm that I got after surgery that says ‘gratitude’,” Jones says. “To remember every day to have gratitude that I am alive, and to have gratitude for the people in my life, and to have gratitude to be able to do the things I love to do.”

But that doesn’t mean to say that Jones’ competitive spirit is on ice. In fact, it is thriving, with Jones, at 56, playing competitively in the over-50 age group category for the Canadian Senior Women’s Curling Championship. The old monkey mind of Jones’ youth that used to whisper “I may lose” is now replaced by affirmations that embolden Jones with confidence and game-play assurance. “Generally, I only allow myself to think and say positive things,” Jones says.Positivity is an attitude Jones needs in abundance as she walks the path with her mom, Anne, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s.

“There is no easy way to handle Alzheimer’s,” Jones says. “One has a hard time finding the bright side of this disease. It is an extremely sad thing to watch someone go through; it is like experiencing the seven stages of grief. All those dignified wonderful people; this disease takes away their whole identity.

“It is such an unfair and cruel disease. There are way too many people approaching this demographic and we all need to be made aware and take responsibility for spreading the word: we can find a cure and an answer for this disease. It is an urgent health crisis and it has to be made a priority.”

Jones is proactive in her approach to staying healthy— mentally, physically, and spiritually. Practices that include eating less sugar, bike riding, yoga, and engaging in lots of physical movement.

“I love keeping my body strong. Bike rides are huge for me; just watching a little bit of pavement in front of me renews me. I will never be Clara Hughes but I enjoy having the goal of maybe biking places like Corsica, New Zealand, Argentina. I’ve done the GranFondo bike ride from Vancouver to Whistler (122 km). I like having goals I can set my sights on; goals without pressure. Although I always do put pressure on myself. I call it taming the beast,” Jones says with a laugh.

Jones, who foresees another 40 great years ahead of her and is “not going to miss a beat of it,” refuses to let age define what she can or cannot do. “I will always push to be the next chapter of my life. What else can I do, where else can I go?”

Life’s full package is fuelled by Jones’ cherished boys: husband Scott, “who has had her back the whole way,” and sons Zach and Luke. Jones refers to all of them as her best life teachers. Jones’ role as a human interest journalist for the CBC also keeps her centred and engaged with everyday life experiences, which in turn allows her to actualize her quest to be stronger, smarter, wiser.

Jones laughs as she admits that she is a big fan of what Keith Richards (of Rolling Stones fame) quipped in his 2015 documentary: “I’m not getting older, I’m evolving.”

“Every day I look forward to growing into the person I can be. I love this age. I don’t need to be 30 or 40 again,” Jones says. “For me, the key is to enjoy the moment I am in and work to a place of peace and gratitude every day. When I get to the end of this life I want to be able to say, I played this game of life really well.” n Ph

[BODY & SOUL SUPPLEMENT ]

Spring into Life I ALWAYS LOOK FORWARD to spring, no matter how wild or mild the winter has been. Spring brings with it a certain freshness, not only evident in the environment, but in our minds, bodies and souls. It all starts in early March when the clocks spring forward.

Enjoy reading the March/April issue of BODY & SOUL, offering tips, techniques and behind-the-scenes information. I suggest starting with “Spring Fashion & Beauty Trends” aimed at inspiring you to update your current look with simple changes

and additions to your accessories, hair and makeup. Nothing says “Too old!” as letting your time clock slide.

A must read is Helen Pach Goldstein’s article “Yoga: A Healthy Obsession.” Helen, a true disciple of Dr. Deepak Chopra, explains how people afflicted with chronic pain can benefit.

In House Calls, Dr. Sam Hanna, our resident dermatologist, discusses “How to Spot Melanoma.” As April is cancer month, we remember how this devastating disease can affect us all.

Congratulations to... Joan Sayer for winning our Holiday Gift Guide Giveaway, valued at $1,750. Joan writes, “Thank you so much to the generosity of all. My family will share in the prize, as well as my local parish church organization, St. Vincent de Paul Society.”

I would love to hear from you. Send your beauty, health and wellness questions, comments and feedback to [email protected], or write to me at Active Life, BODY & SOUL, 37 Sandiford Drive, Suite 404, Stouffville, Ontario L4A 7X5.

Pastels | By now everyone knows the Pantone colours of the year are Rose Quartz (pale pink) and Serenity (hues of blue-grey and lilac). Here’s how you can integrate these trend-setting colours to your wardrobe: accessories (shoes, purse, jewelry), a lightweight knit sweater or denim.

The 1980s | Also with a nod to the ’70s, so keep your suede; it’s trending this spring. However, update with your favourite ’80s styles, such as double-breasted dresses (denim is ideal) with large belts.

Victorian Style | Longer-length dresses and blouses feature flowing fabrics, higher collars, ruffles, puffy sleeves, flower prints, and lace.

8 ADAPTABLE SPRING TRENDS

T he beauty industry uses this mantra when it picks trends each season, starting with fashion, followed by hair and makeup. Choosing and adapting the appropriate trends

to update your individual style not only enhances your best physical features, but keeps you looking and feeling younger.

This spring say goodbye to minimalism and hello to over-the-top style and bold mixing. More is better for a trendy maximalist look.

Unique White Shirts | Look for interesting details from pleats to asymmetrical necklines, such as flounces on one side.

Lightweight Denim | It’s everywhere this season: dresses, skirts, pants, and accessories.

Sleeve Details | Detail is drawn to the lower arm and away from the shoulder. Off-the-shoulder tops and dresses are featured with lower sleeve details such as flares, pleats, and gathers.

Crisscross Tops | Update with a variation of last season’s crop top, featuring a crisscross or X detail.

Flat Shoes | Flatter heels from last year continue to trend with a sleeker turn. Start with a pair of mules (open back) or a comfortable slipper-type shoe in one of the Pantone colours of the year.

How to Spot Melanoma

A If there is a concerning spot on your skin, your dermatologist is best equipped to examine it to determine if it is truly a concern. When I examine

a changing or new spot of concern, there are several things I consider.

First of all, is it a pigmented spot, a spot containing the skin’s brown pigment melanin? If so, this is in the category of “pigmented lesions.” This includes benign moles (or nevi), benign but evolving “atypical nevi” and, most worrisome, melanoma, a potentially life threatening skin cancer arising from the melanin-producing cells in the skin.

MelanomaMelanoma can present as a changing dark or irregularly pigmented spot. Its borders may be indistinct or irregular. It can show areas of pigment loss within it and, as it progresses, it can bleed or ulcerate.

BiopsyOnce I identify a suspicious spot, I will typically do a biopsy. This is a small, nearly painless, in-office procedure where the skin is numbed with a local anesthetic and either the whole spot or a portion of it (depending on its size) is removed. The spot is then sent to a pathologist who looks at it under the microscope and determines if there is any concern for melanoma and, if so, how significant it is. Subsequently, I will either elect to remove the remainder of the spot myself or send the patient to another surgeon for further treatment.

Risk FactorsRisk factors for melanoma include: fair skin, family history of melanoma, and significant history of sun exposure, either recreationally, through work or from artificial tanning.

While melanoma can occur anywhere on the body (and in any skin type) it is commonly found in fairer skinned people, often on a man’s back or a woman’s legs. Discovered early, it tends to be quite curable but as it progresses, it starts to acquire depth in the skin and becomes, unfortunately, difficult to cure. So it is imperative that you learn the features to look for, examine your skin, and report concerns to your doctor. It could well save your life.

And, yes, because your mother and grandmother both have had skin cancer, you are a higher risk patient. While we can’t change our history, our genetics, or our luck, we can reduce our additional risk with the regular use of high-SPF broad-spectrum sunscreens, use of sun protective clothing, and sun avoidance where possible. n

Q My doctor has suggested that I have a dermatologist examine a suspicious brown spot on my face. Both my grandmother

and my mother have had skin cancer. Does this make me more susceptible? What are the signs of a cancerous brown spot/mole and how is it removed?

WHERE EXPERTS ANSWER READERS’ QUESTIONS ON BEAUTY, HEALTH AND WELLNESS.

In this issue, Dr. Sam Hanna, FAAD, DABD, Cosmetic Dermatologist and Director of Dermatology ON BLOOR (dermonbloor.com), discusses…

I teach my patients the mnemonic ABCDE to consider when they look at brown spots on their skin. A spot that shows one or more of these features may be more likely to represent melanoma.

A Asymmetry in shape or colourB Border irregularityC Colour variabilityD Diameter larger than 6mm (about a pencil eraser)E Evolution in appearance or symptoms (e.g., itching or bleeding).

1. Vrikshasana / Tree PoseThis balancing pose tones and strengthens the ankles, knees, hip joints, shoulders, stomach and abdomen. It increases blood circulation, reducing the amount of pain you feel, and helps you to focus your mind and relax. It also helps balance and enhances confidence. Caution: If you have injured your knee or back, do the pose under the supervision of a professional trainer.

Method:• Stand with your legs together

and put your weight on one leg.• Raise the other leg and place the

heel of your foot somewhere on your standing leg and move it all the way up to your inner thigh (use your hand to guide you).

• Keep your eyes focused in front on an object that is not moving. You are now in a powerful balancing posture.

Many of us ache due to chronic ailments such as arthritis. The following simple yoga postures will help to relieve the symptoms of these challenges. A few minutes doing these postures, along

with your regular exercise routine, will help keep you lithe and long and feeling younger. Reminder: Listen to your body carefully as you practice these postures. Inhale long, deep breaths through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Focus on your body’s sensations and thoughts as you move. It’s a great way to get to know oneself. Discomfort is to be expected as you are doing something your body may not be used to, but pain means stop!

• Once you feel stable, bring your hands together in front of your heart in prayer position.

• If this feels safe, lift your hands above your head, pointing to the ceiling.

• Keep your eyes focused on the object and BREATHE.

• If needed, hold on to a table or wall for safety.

• Change sides and notice the difference.

In yoga, it is believed that an unsteady mind leads to an unsteady body. The more you can control your mind, the better you can do the pose.

2. Setu Bandhasana / Bridge PoseThis is a simple, all-purpose posture that relieves stiffness and discomfort on your spine, neck, arms and hips. It also helps keep blood pressure under control, to relax the mind, improve di-gestion, and relieve the symptoms of menopause and respiratory problems. Caution: Avoid this pose if you have a neck or back injury.

Method:• Lay on your back, bend your knees

with your feet flat on the floor, hip width apart. Make sure your knees do not extend your toes.

• Inhale. As you exhale press your feet down and lift your butt up off the floor.

• Relax your knees and shoulders. Your neck, shoulders and head are flat on the ground and your body in the air. Use your arms to push back and press your elbows into the ground for more stretch.

• Breathe deeply and watch your sensations as you breathe.

• If possible, press your chin into your throat, giving your thyroid a little “Hello.” This is the key to staying focused and aware. n

The people we met while eating lunch in this neat little seaport town, where the fish we were enjoying came off one of the trawlers tied up at the busy dock

just a few hours earlier, told us the history of Killybegs.

One man said: “The name Killybegs comes from the stone buildings believed to have been built here by monks centuries ago. The buildings were known as the ‘Little Cells’ and although they were never officially discovered, three buildings uncovered when we were making the new pier looked very much like three cells.”

Another injected: “St. Catherine of Alexandria – martyred in the 4th century – is the patron saint of our town. She never stepped foot in Ireland but being the Patron Saint of Seafarers, she was the one we selected.”

We had moved on to dessert when the town’s historian told us: “Killybegs played an important role in the Spanish Armada back in 1588. In fact, many of the sailors who swam ashore here after their ships were sunk were killed all along our coast. Just outside our harbour, two Spanish wrecks sit with lots of gold in their bellies but they have never been found.”

Over coffee, a lady listening at the next table told us: “If you’ve come all this way, you have to visit the Glencolmcille Folk Village. It’s just up the road. It has lots of thatched cottages and it gives you an idea of the struggles our ancestors faced trying to farm this land.

“Oh,” she continued, “you must stop at the cliffs at Teelin.”

“And hold onto your hat when you’re up there,” said the historian. “The winds at Slieve League are very strong.”

Slieve League, we later discovered, is the official name of cliffs formed half a billion years earlier. They rise 900 feet from the sea, making them the highest cliffs in Europe.

The meal and tourism lesson over, we decided to stroll along the narrow streets of old Killybegs, where the buildings are painted pastel colors and the salty sea air brushes against your face. The town sits in Donegal Bay and is one of the prettiest you’ll see in Ireland.

The Long and Winding RoadReturning to our car, we started out on the N56 road in search of the cliffs, passing baron fields of black peak moss along the way. As per instructions, we turned off onto the R263 at Carrick and followed the rollercoaster road until we reached the entrance of Slieve League (Grey Mountain).

At this point you have a choice. Walk up the long, winding road that clings precariously to the rocky cliff or drive on a one-lane road and pray you don’t meet an oncoming car. Our

prayers were answered and soon our car was perched on top of the cliff where sheep nonchalantly grazed, oblivious to the sheer drop to the sea.

One step out of the car the words of the man in Killybegs rang true – the hurricane force winds almost knocked me over. My partner hung onto the car, refusing to venture close to the edge for fear of being swept into the sea.

I inched ever closer to the edge and was treated for my efforts with an awesome view – one that rivaled the much more famous Cliffs of Moher outside Lahinch for jaw dropping beauty. Mighty waves crashed against the rocky shoreline below and the view one gets of the Sligo Mountains from that point is truly breathtaking.

A sheepherder approached us and said a walk along “One Man’s Path” would lead us to even better views but his warning of “the climb must be approached with caution because it is very dangerous,” persuaded us to return to the car and continue our journey.

An attendant at the entrance told us of some old Christian ruins and a watch tower that sit along one of the paths leading from the cliff and suggested to turn around and see them. We told him we’d be back on a day when the winds were less severe.

“I guess we’ll never see you again, then,” said the man with a smile. n

Theatre & Annual EventsThe Town of Kincardine celebrates its Scottish heritage every year with the Kincardine Scottish Festival & Highland Games, held on the first weekend in July. A wide variety of Celtic performers are featured, including 30 pipe bands and 200 Highland dancers.

Since 1948, the Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band takes to Queen Street (rain or shine) at 8 p.m. every Saturday night throughout the summer. Hundreds of people turn up for this traditional celebration each, and every, week. Pipers and drummers visiting the area are welcome to join in, but proper dress is required.

In the beachside town of Kincardine, the Bluewater Summer Playhouse has been operating since 1994. Visit their website to reserve tickets for the 2016 season. Throughout the Municipality of Kincardine, Sundown Theatre presents new works at site-specific locations.

Artful Hands Kincardine hosts seasonal art shows spotlighting a plethora of artists in the area. Visit their Facebook page. The Lighthouse Blues Festival has become a popular event for the seventh year in a row, and is a great kick-off to the lazy days of summer. Performances are scheduled for July 8-10 this year.

The Kincardine Marine Heritage Festival, the Gathering of the Bands Festival and Cruise Nights (Classic Cars) are all summer favourites, and fit right in with the beachside atmosphere.

Markets & MusingsEvery Saturday from May 21 to October 8, 9 a.m. to noon, the Kincardine Agricultural Society Farmers’ Market is held at Connaught Park. Here you’ll be able to taste local produce, eggs, meats, baked goods, preserves, honey, fair-trade coffee, and more. Every Monday, from Victoria Day and onwards, Market in the Park runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Bruce Coast Lighthouse Tour is popular with heritage and marine enthusiasts. The Kincardine lighthouse is the only downtown lighthouse, and is situated on the banks of the Penetangore River where it serviced a busy fishing and local salt shipping industry.

Built in 1850 by Francis (Paddy) Walker, the Walker House is now a local museum and heritage site, and is the oldest standing wooden hotel in Bruce and Grey counties.

Natural AmenitiesVolunteers of the Kincardine Trail Association have developed 22 kilometres of sustainable trails since 2001. Phase III will connect trails from Kincardine, along the former CN rail line, to the municipality’s northern boundary.

Station Beach is the main beach in Kincardine. Along the waterfront you’ll find a boardwalk, water sports and a surfing area, as well as a harbour marina with a free boat launch.

hen empty nesters Kate and David Williams

purchased the quaint 1,000- square-foot bungalow in York Region, they chose it for the location, which is close to all amenities: the highway, the hospital where Kate works, and the schools for their then young children. Of equal importance was the beautifully large mature lot the house was situated on. Over the years, they raised their family in this home and filled it with many great treasured memories.

THE WAKEUP CALLThree years ago, Kate’s ailing father came to live with the family. As they cared for him, it quickly became

apparent that the small three-bedroom bungalow, with its narrow hallway and tiny bathroom, was simply not conducive to caring for the elderly. This started them thinking and planning for their own future.

“We love our house and want to remain here well after our retirement. And, should the need arise, we want to be able to care for David’s parents as well,” says Kate. So the decision was made to renovate the small bungalow to create a home that works for their needs, now and in the future.

Kate and David came to us with the desire to renovate their home to better facilitate the needs of the elderly and, if necessary, to accommodate a wheel chair. They

also wanted us to create a modern loft-like metropolitan feel to the house, while maintaining the charm and relaxed feel of the country.

We redesigned the three-bedroom, 1,000-square-foot bungalow, with its small L-shaped living room/dining room combination and tiny single bathroom, as a bright open-concept, large single-bedroom home with a large master ensuite and an abun-dance of well-utilized storage space.

PHASE ONEBecause we decided not to relocate the staircase with access to the lower level, the kitchen remained where it was originally. However, we did renovate the small, poorly laid out, dark space into a bright, modern galley kitchen. The original three-piece bathroom was converted to an entrance closet and powder room.

We designed the space with a hallway that is now over four feet wide, with 36-inch-wide doorways

and seamless floor transitions. These dimensions will easily accommodate a wheelchair should the need ever arise.

In the open and airy large master bedroom, we created abundant closet space and a luxurious yet understated master bathroom. The large seamless walk-in shower is barrier-free, without a curb. And, although the beautiful soaker tub is not necessarily handicap-accessible, it was on Kate and David’s current wish list. The bathroom was designed for today, with the possible needs of the future in mind.

PHASE TWOThe lower level, with its lovely walk-out to the beautiful backyard, became phase two of the renovation. A large bedroom, three-piece bathroom, living room, and office space for David were added here, basically creating a secondary living space.

The thought behind this was to create another living area should

David’s parents need to move in. If so, the parents would live upstairs and Kate and David would have the lower level for themselves.

Another option is if Kate and David require any assistance in their senior years, the lower level would provide living space for a caregiver, hopefully avoiding a transition to an assisted-living residence. For now, it’s a beautiful family room, office and guest room, with a great view of Kate’s stunning, well-loved gardens.

This quaint 1960s bungalow, full of history and memories, has become a new home for Kate and David to enjoy, designed for comfortable, contemporary living now and for many years to come. n

[IN THE GARDEN]

BY MARK CULLEN

❏ Action PlanFor your best garden ever

Mark Cullen appears on Canada AM every Wednesday morning at 8:40. He is the Lawn & Garden Expert for Home Hardware. Sign up for his free monthly newsletter at markcullen.com

❏ SPRAY Apply dormant spray to your fruit trees, roses, most flowering trees and shrubs as soon as evening temperatures remain above freezing. This may not be soon, but now know. Dormant spray is a two-bottle arrangement that you buy in a box. One bottle contains a refined mineral oil called dormant oil. It smothers overwintering insect egg casings and prevents the first generation of tent caterpillars from taking over your crab apple; same with aphids on your roses.

The second bottle is lime sulphur, a natural disease suppressant. The active bacteria and spores that promote powdery mildew and sooty mould are discouraged by the smell of this stuff. I recommend that you spray it and go run some errands for a few hours. Lime sulphur smells like rotten eggs, but it works.

❏ PRUNE Now is the time to prune most any fruiting trees, especially apples, peaches, apricots and nectarines. Open up their structure by removing a portion of the branches that grow in the interior of the tree. Let the sun shine on the fruit as it ripens and remove some of the top growth, allowing wind to whistle through. Sunshine and breezes encourage evenly ripened fruit and discourage the diseases and insects that the dormant spray didn’t reach. It’s also good time of year to prune cedar hedges and junipers. Shaping them now produces a soft, finished look in a month or two as new growth appears.

Leave your pear tree unless it is unruly or getting in your way. They generally don’t like being pruned.

❏ FERTILIZE Your lawn stored up nutrients at its root zone last fall, which is why it explodes out of the soil with the warming temperatures and increased rainfall of spring. Soon, however, it outgrows the available nutrients in the soil and weeds compete their way into the lawn, and insects are tempted by its weakened state.

None of this happens, to the same extent, when a quality fertilizer is applied early in spring. A product with slow-release nitrogen provides a safe, lasting green as this is the one element that your lawn craves the most after a long winter.

The addition of iron, at least one percent in the bag, is the key to a greener lawn. Use a quality lawn

fertilizer that contains chelated iron, a type of iron that is available in a form that grass plants can readily absorb. There is a new form of iron on the market called “DDP” which produces extraordinary results.

Thicken your lawn with fresh grass seed spread on thin areas. Put down 2 or 3 cm of lawn soil first, spread the seed evenly, rake smooth, and step on it so the seed makes firm contact with the soil. Water regularly until germination occurs.

❏ ENHANCE The nutrients in your garden and container soil were used up, primarily, by last year’s plants. You can replenish those nutrients by adding generous quantities of composted manure.

April is the time to dig generous quantities of composted cattle or sheep manure into your garden beds. I spread 20 kg over a square metre of soil and turn it under, or work it in with a cultivator or garden fork, or leave it and let the earthworms pull it down. I can’t emphasize enough the benefits of adding finished compost to your garden soil.

❏ REPLACE Containers should have last year’s soil removed and placed on the garden. Scrape out the inside of each pot with a stiff brush to remove the caked-on soil replace with fresh container mix. Use one of the quality mixes because you do get what you pay for with this product. I like Pro Mix, CIL Potting Soil and my own Mark’s Choice container mix. n

WINDFALL IS HERE AT LAST Semi and detached homes next to Blue Mountain Village

The community at Windfall Blue Mountain is an inspired enclave of semi-detached and detached mountain homes, developed by Georgian International and set in one of Ontario’s most

glorious landscapes. It’s so perfectly incorporated that the community looks like it has always been here. Of the 148 acres, one-third is dedicated to parks, ponds, trails and a nature preservation area. Even the streets are designed to curve and dip, just so, giving walkers and drivers a gorgeous experience throughout. With an invitation to explore, to play and to relax, the homes of Windfall will inspire your whole lifestyle.GREAT NEIGHBOURS | Windfall is the centre of everything you love about life in the Blue Mountains, starting with great neighbours. The Village is just a stone’s throw away, where you can shop, ski, stroll, or claim a day just for you and luxuriate in the waters of the award-winning Scandinave Spa Blue Mountain. ARTFUL ARCHITECTURE | Distinctive yet unpretentious, sophisticated and timeless, the artful architecture of the homes are the work of William Hicks of Hicks Partners, also responsible for some of Canada’s most distinguished projects. As a modern and eco-friendly interpretation of the romantic Georgian Bay cabin and chalet designs of the region, Windfall’s bungalow, bungaloft and two-storey designs are timelessly sophisticated. ATTENTION TO DETAIL | Each home, like every aspect of Windfall’s planning, design and construction, has been thought out with meticulous attention to detail. The position of each residence, the selected colour palettes that ensure each relates beautifully to one another and to the environment, nothing has been overlooked.

RICH IN AMENTITIES | At the heart of this community, the Shed is a barn-inspired yet architecturally striking hub where residents can gather year-round to enjoy the fellowship of others who value the good life. TRUE BLUE | From the many sporting activities available, including skiing, golf, cycling and hiking, to the siren call of the nearby historic villages and all the art galleries and eateries they offer, to its proximity to major retail and modern healthcare services in nearby Collingwood, this area is the ideal combination of secluded and social. The longest freshwater beach in the world is just down the road in Wasaga Beach. CONNECTED TO NATURE | Ontario’s favourite four-season playground is practically on its doorstep, and the endlessly awe-inspiring Georgian Bay provides nourishment for body and soul, with a wealth of outdoor activities and stunning views.

Windfall currently presents in two united and yet distinct phases: the sold-out Phase I is 37 exclusive detached homes beside an expansive nature preserve, with first residents’ enjoying the opportunity to live next to a stream and wildlife corridor, greenbelt and woods. The 52 semi-detached and detached homes of Phase II offer the convenience of a location at the entrance of the neighbourhood, adjacent to the nature corridor, with scenic walking trails that connect to the Spa and Blue Mountain’s newest ski runs and life, The Orchards.

Semi-detached and detached mountain homes at Windfall range from the high $300,000s to the mid $500,000s. For more information and to register to be among the first to learn about the evolving story of Windfall, visit windfallatblue.com n

SHELTER COVE Waterfront community on the shores of Lake Erie

Most of us have had fantasies about getting away from it all; you know, leaving the rat race behind and living an exciting and meaningful life, close to nature and all its

beauty, and enjoying the peace and serenity attendant to this lifestyle.

Well, here’s some good news: all this is a reality at Shelter Cove, a gated waterfront community on the shores of Lake Erie.

There are so many wonderful aspects to life at Shelter Cove that it’s difficult to list them all. As stated above, Shelter Cove is a gated community with controlled access. This ensures privacy as well as security for its residents.

It’s also situated at the mouth of Sandusk Creek, where the creek joins Lake Erie. And it’s called ‘Shelter Cove’ for a reason, meaning the private on-site marina is protected from the lake’s wave action, which ensures your watercraft is also protected. For those interested in fishing, Lake Erie is one of Ontario’s best lakes for sports fishing with an abundance of walleye and perch.

Shelter Cove offers it residents the rare opportunity

to experience nature in all its glory. It’s normal to catch a good glimpse of a magnificent bald eagle or a flock of wild turkeys, while deer regularly make their rounds through the community.

For those into boating, Shelter Cove is ideal. With a short walk from your home to your dock, you can be on the lake in a matter of minutes.

On site amenities include a 5,000-plus-square-foot residents-only club house, currently under construction and expected to be inaugurated later this year. There’s also a large outdoor swimming pool, along with future-planned walking trails, residents’ garden plots, and provisions for boat and RV storage.

At Shelter Cove you can say goodbye to grass cutting, leaf raking and snow shoveling, as all this is included in your low $100 per month maintenance fee. In addition, residents enjoy the convenience of natural gas and the community produces its own drinking water, sourced through reverse osmosis from an underground aquifer. Shelter Cove also has its very own state-of-the-art waste-water plant, so there are no septic tanks.

The amenities surrounding Shelter Cove are many and varied and include supermarkets, healthcare, golf courses, fine dining establishments, as well as quaint boutiques and even service clubs in nearby Simcoe and Port Dover.

What’s more, Shelter Cove, being located on the north shore of Erie, means it’s at the northern extremity of the Great Carolinian Forest. Winters here are much less severe and allow for the growth of trees and plants not found in areas like Hamilton or Toronto.

But location and amenities are only half the story. The homes at Shelter Cove comprise the other half. Homes are priced from as little as $163,000, with leasehold tenure. These homes are also manufactured homes. They are built indoors under strict quality control, safe from the elements ensuring the building materials are not exposed to rain and, therefore, unlikely to warp. Built to the Ontario Building Code, they are also exceptionally well insulated and come with high-efficiency furnaces to ensure that you’re comfortable and cosy year ‘round.

Leasehold tenure offers huge financial advantages because it saves residents the cost of a serviced building

lot, which can run from $100,000 to $150,000. Investing this money wisely has the potential of paying the annual cost of the lease while the principal remains intact.

Some residents have actually taken out a mortgage on their home because low bank rates make this a shrewd financial move. For instance, if a couple sold their home in Hamilton for $504,000 and moved to Shelter Cove, taking out a mortgage of $184,000, they could invest the proceeds from the sale of their home and have an average annual return of just over $31,000. So, after mortgage payments, leasehold fees, taxes and maintenance, they would be ahead by over $13,000 year.

Come and see for yourself by visiting the site where some of your future neighbours would be happy to have you tour their homes. n

The Shelter Cove Sales Office is open Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday by appointment. 1.866.416.8848 / sheltercove.ca

Blueberry Bliss

Recipe and photos from Happy hens & Fresh eggs by Signe Langford used with permission from Douglas & McIntyre.

This dessert is about as sweet and adorable as a fluffy baby chick, and absolutely perfect for brunch. Once you decide you’re going to

make this, you’ll need to start being very mindful about how you crack open the eggs you cook with; you’ll need to save up as many perfect shells as you wish to serve, with just the right opening near the top.

If you’re not into the eggshell thing, any tiny vessel will do: espresso cup, liqueur glass, shot glass, sake cup. The size will change, however, and so will your amounts.

Serve the filled shells in egg cups with wee spoons—avoid silver—and a few simple all-butter, not-too-sweet shortbread cookies. This recipe is also a perfect excuse to buy one of those nifty kitchen torches; you’ll need one to brûlée the meringue.

INGREDIENTS

1 ½ cups (350 mL) Light and Fluffy Citrus Curd, chilled (recipe on page 111 of the book)1 ½ cups (350 mL) French Meringue, (recipe on page 71 of the book)1/3 cup (80 mL) vanilla super-fine or regular sugar

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Prepare 2 dozen eggshells to be used as serving cups (see sidebar for instructions). Place in serving cups and set aside.

2. Fill the prepared shells with chilled lemon curd; set aside.

3. Top each filled shell with a nice tall dollop of meringue, or get all fancy and pipe it on. Sprinkle each with a wee bit of the sugar and brûlée with a kitchen torch. You can also try it under the broiler, but it can be tricky and tippy and I don’t recommend it.

HOW TO PREPARE THE EGGSHELLSInvest in an egg topper or another sharp eggshell-cutting tool specifically designed to cleanly slice the tops off boiled eggs. I have one from Swissmar that does the job. It works well with boiled eggs, either soft or hard, but with raw eggs, it tends to shatter the shell. Once you’ve got nice empty shells, rinse them out with cold water. If you use hot, you’ll cook any remaining egg right onto the shell. Once it feels completely clean inside, and you’ve pulled out any bits of membrane, turn the shells upside down to drip dry.

While all condos must be built to code, builders like Times Group know that condos built to Savings by Design (SBD) standards have energy performance beyond code. For you, that means lower energy bills, better indoor air quality, increased comfort and future proof durability – so you’ll save on monthly maintenance charges. “We want to build communities that are sustainable for generations to come,” says Times Group Vice President Shadi Aghaei. Join the many condo owners benefitting from savings built right in.
