Complete a focus lesson with students, using the anchor charts, before using this activity in stations. Understanding the use and difference between verb tenses will help students incorporate this convention correctly in their independent writing.

STATION TASK CARD Unit 1 2 3 4 ______________ Station Activity Name: Activate the Verbs Standard: Conventions of Standard English Skill/Objective: (COPY IN YOUR PASSPORT) Form and Use of Verbs Directions: 1. Take an Activity Sheet to complete on your own. 2. Take turns reading the anchor charts provided. Be sure you understand the difference between present, past and future verbs. 3. Using the newspapers and magazines provided, look for examples of each tense of verb. Find at least 3 of each. 4. Neatly cut out the verbs and glue them on the correct place on your Activity Sheet. Now use each verb in a sentence. Read each sentence aloud with expression and fluency.
Challenge: Select an article from the newspaper or one provided to you by the teacher. Circle all the verbs within the text. Now sort them according to their tenses. Rewrite the article using a different tense for each verb. Be sure to change spellings, as needed. Does the meaning of the article change?
