Action // Musique V.2 premiered at the 2010 Art and Design Faculty Exhibition at Purdue University. The exhibition took place at the Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries from November 18 through December 03, 2010. This is a documentation of the work in the gallery space.

Statement

16 millions of color numeric combinations is as good as our understanding of the RGB color system. My current work revolves around computational models to paint with light in the context of other luminous sources. The result is not always predictable, but can always be traced.

A luminous color palette is as “sculptural” as our understanding of a 3D color system, such as the RGB cube. The 21st Century will be painted in RGB and the picture plane will always be deceiving, a flatland where understanding and perception meet head-on.

My work is part science and part visual poetry, with lots of in-betweens. Since Albers, no revolution has really occurred in the art world of color. I am very interested in the interaction of light and light. I use RGB colors for self-expression and to investigate the threshold of human perception, engagement and cognition. Digital color manipulation provides us with new tools to foster such understanding. The new colors of art are fundamentally computational and algorithmic. Therefore, seeing color is not enough.

Action//Musique v.2 is a reactive audio and visual sculptural installation that acknowledges and responds to presence and movements with sound and color patterns.

The work is composed of a computer, projector, strings, speakers, a video-cam, and human interaction. A custom software was developed for the work.

Concerns with normal gallery lighting conditions, automation, installation and portability are integral part of this work. Artists are increasingly nomadic.

Action//Musique v.2 explores fundamentals of human-computer interfacing, real-time sound and image processing.

Computer vision applied to motion detection, sound and algorithmic color manipulation is intrinsic to the work.

Abstract and colorfield paintings are referenced in Action//Musique v.2. Also, it investigates the painterly potential of light and the manipulation of space and the picture plane to create optical illusion..

The 21st Century will be painted in RGB. In the context of sound and space, computational systems, coupled with the body in motion, provide new ways to manipulate and experience color.
