Action2020

“YES” and we’re backing it up with

Action2020’

‘We sayCan business be a positive force to solve global

enviromental and social issues?

Based on the latest scientific consensus, Action2020 sets an agenda for business to take action on sustainable development to 2020 and beyond.

It’s a platform for how business can positively influence environmental and social trends while strengthening their own resilience to issues like climate change, demographic dynamics and skills shortages.

Action2020 is the WBCSD’s primary platform for helping business help the world achieve a sustainable future.

Numbering close to 200 across all sectors and regions, WBCSD member companies can have real impact on global challenges. Over the next few years, the WBCSD will shape its activities around Action2020’s nine Priority Areas.

It will work with and for its members to support them in their efforts to contribute to reaching the Societal Must-Haves, and ultimately, Vision 2050.

Vision 2050 to Action2020

Action2020 focuses on strategic solutions that meet targets over the next few years – a time horizon that business and political leaders can readily embrace.

The long view

Action2020 emerged from the WBCSD’s Vision 2050 report, a set of priorities for business and sustainability based on an intensive study of environmental, demographic and development trends.

Vision 2050’s long-term perspective frames the importance of these issues. But to make an impact on the future, leaders need to act today.

More About Societal Must-Haves

Central to Action2020 are societal targets: “Societal Must-Haves.” These cover nine Priority Areas from climate change, water and ecosystems to skills and employment, basic needs and human rights and sustainable lifestyles.

Each Societal Must-Have represents a target we need to meet if our planet’s systems are to return to a sustainable track over the next decade. Global in nature, Societal Must-Haves can only be met by business, government and society working together.

The Societal Must-Haves were developed by Action2020 member companies based on a scientific review led by the Stockholm Resilience Centre and other input from social scientists (drawing on publicly available data and research from many sources).

PRIORITY AREASAction2020 is grounded in

science. Nine Priority Areas, each with their own challenges and objectives – the Societal

Must-Haves.

BUSINESS SOLUTIONSBusiness Solutions are impactful, measurable, scalable, replicable and beyond business-as-usual.

Business Solutions.

ACTION2020How Does Action2020 Work?

1. Societal Must-Haves are the goals in each of nine Priority Areas that must be met to achieve Vision 2050.

2. Business Solutions are how companies implement Action2020.

Societal Must-Have for Water

By 2020, water of adequate quality and quantity is shared among all users and is in a more sustainable balance with the limits of renewable water resources and ecosystem requirements.

Significantly reduce the rate of agricultural water withdrawals in water stressed aquifers and river basins, relative to 2012 baseline.

Significantly reduce the amount of all untreated wastewater discharge, relative to 2012 baseline.

Significantly accelerate the progressive realization of the human right to water and sanitation, relative to 2012 baseline.

Make significant effort in improving watershed collaboration between all stakeholders to reduce shared water risks.

Phase 3 Implementation of water stewardship strategies

at the enterprise and local level. Engage outside the company/supplier fence line seek risk reduction opportunities with other users in the watersheds (i.e., collective action initiatives

to reduce share water risks).

Phase 2Development of a comprehensive water

strategy, including implementation of local action plans across operations and/or supply

chain, responding to risks and seeking business oppurtunities with other water users in

the watershed.

Phase 1Corporate water risk assessment across direct operations and/or supply chain depending on

where water is most material. Identification of most at-risk areas based on business value at risk, value

of water and materiality.

Timeline

Businesses can reduce impending shared water risk through assessment and implementation of water management plans that address sections of their value chain where water is most material and exposure to risk is greatest.

Actions by business will focus on reducing shared risk across the value chain, addressing challenges relevant to their business, such as:

Increasing water use efficiency across key points of the agricultural value chain.

Eliminating untreated industrial wastewater discharge.

Increasing equitable and sustainable access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH).

Action2020 Business SolutionsCurrent Business Solutions

An Action2020 Business Solution is the “how-to” for implementing Action2020. Businesses can individually or in collaboration with industry or partners make operational, commercial or policy changes that contribute to the Societal Must-Haves.

Some Business Solutions require only companies’ efforts to implement; others will be enabled by policy and regulatory changes or partnerships.
