He attends these religious groups as they give him comfort which helps him cope with his mum’s death.

Note(theme of religion and theme of poverty)It could be argued that one of the reasons why Alec becomes interested in religion is because it is a way for him to escape his social class.

Most of the people he meets at the Mission would not be living in poverty like him and his father.
