I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all the members who could attend our 10th B i r thday bash for the association. And I am sure that everyone who could come had a wonderful time.

We started the Seminar with a greeting from Stacey (Secretary and myself) and everyone was handed a goodies bag with brow design sheets, a design pencil for brows, callipers, information from Sue Farley, from M.B.C pigments from Bio touch and also handouts, a gorgeous smelling candle from Gold Canyon candles by Alicia Hutton (please ring and speak with Alicia if wanting more for salons) and chocolates. It was a great way to start the seminar.

Caroline Nelson (business coach) gave a small talk on your business and growing your cash flow.

C a r o l i n e h a d

some great pointers in ways you can maximise your potential in your business and what to do when starting up a new business. (I have added a form in newsletter if you want more info from Caroline). How you can make your business grow and be successful?

As the day progressed we had a great time with Sue and in her c l a s s . S u e h a d a s l i d e p r e s e n t a t i o n a n d a s m a l l introduction and then we got to see Sue with hands on approach in doing procedures. Sue makes learning very easy and fun, therefore every hairstroke and shading you perform on your clients is done with such precision it is hard to not create perfection. Sue has taught us the way she teaches in the U.K and what makes every hairstroke count.

When you have the opportunity to be a part of Sue’s class you

walk away

with such knowledge that even if you are a beginner you learn so much more.

When the first day was over we had the AGM meeting when the new committee was elected.

Myself President/ Treasurer, Donna Moody Martin Vice President, Stacey Rolfe - Secretary, Jennifer Marshall, Wendy Peters, Tina Hammond are the Committee.

All other information will be discussed in Newsletter.

“ATTENTION MEMBERS”

It has recently been brought to my attention that some members who shall

remain nameless have been performing cosmetic treatments in an unethical

manner. Please remember that you have signed a membership form which

states that these kinds of procedures are not in accordance with the ACT

Guidelines.

For the safety of you and your clients, please adhere to the regulations

according to the ACT and OH&S guidelines through skin penetration.

If this matter is raised again in the future, I will be contacting those members

involved which will result in automatic cancellation of membership.

2014 Association of Cosmetic Tattoo Awards Night & Dinner

Awards night and Dinner

We had a lovely meal and drinks with members. Sue and Ronaldo had a great time chatting with members and sharing their experiences about the industry and how they got where they are now. It is wonderful to see members able to relax and get acquainted with everyone else as you make new friends this way.

We had then drawn out the lucky door winner Carolyn Della Zoppa who won the Derma pen kit donated from Donna Moody Martin..

After dinner we had the Entertainment. And thank you to Kaia Corbet and her team of Belly Dancing and Sumba dancers. It was a great show, with them getting up members to dance aswell. We all had a great time.

Roslyn Norris Winners

Advanced Winner – Tricia Denic

Day 2 Seminar.

We got straight into doing lips, design of lip tattooing and shape correction, eyeliner, lash enhancements and shadowing for eyes.

It was a busy second day. I must admit it was great using the practise matts and having Sue work her way around the class and have one on one help from her. We also had Jannifer from MBC setting up shop and helping members with choices of needles and colours for pigments as Sue uses all Nouveau Colours and she shared her favourites.

FEEDBACK FORMS

Thank you to those members who took the time to fill out the feedback forms as we are trying to implement the ideas already. It is really important to have your thoughts on seminars, whether it is in a phone call or handout as I would like to hear how you like or dislike, or what improvements we can make for seminars. It is greatly appreciated.

Hope to see you all again next year.

Paula.

Roslyn Norris CompetitionInformation for the Competition is on the web site for details.

Just a brief overview of how it is judged. A panel of three usually consisting of President, Vice and Master trainer that year sit down and look over the entrants, although this year there was only myself and Sue Farley who got to look at the entrants and I thought it was best that Sue made the final decision on who won. Sue looks at the following things:

1. Symmetry in all sections, Brows, Lips, eyes.

2. Placement of pigment (if pigment has bleed etc).

3. Definition of Hairstrokes.

4. Design

We know that the client always has the last say in what they would like also. The work that is sent in MUST

1. Be presented on time.

2. Presentation in a folder, photo book or hard cover book.

3. Must have before, after and healed photos and be close up and clear.

4. Client history form signed by client (copies only).

5. The form printed of from web site clearly stating what section you are entering in.

It is important for members to know that the work that they submit is not criticised in any way but looked at the way the Trainers would teach in class. As the Master trainers we bring out in the Association are the best to help give guidance to the entrants.

I must apologise that usually we do have the trainer write a message to the entrants to help with their work in future but with this year we were very time poor with Sue and with the layout of seminar.

In future we will be getting the trainers to help with guidance for future entrants.

Please make sure all entries are on time for next year.

All requests are taken into consideration and I hope I have given you some better insight into the competition.

Judging is very fair and we would like to see more members have the opportunity to enter in as it is a prestigious award and it does help grow your business.

Best of luck in the future.

Dear Members,

I believe the 10th Anniversary Dinner went off extremely well and Sue was a great therapist to have for the workshop.

Gayle Smith, one of my Perth trainers and myself attended the American Expo and here I bring you my thoughts on that 2 day conference.

Approximately 70 attendees board the Majesty of the Seas cruise ship from Miami headed to the Bahamas. The first time such an event was to be held on a ship. (I have taken notes for our 2016 Australian seminar which may be held also on a cruise ship).

Registration was held Friday evening and organisers did not allow time for Dinner so that was a quick bite on the run. Linda Dixon was suffering from a flu, but she managed to soldier on each day. The majority of the presentations were via power point and talks. We are very excited to have booked Dr. Dixon for our 2015 Gold Coast Seminar.

Friday evening we had a presentation on Areola and Scalp Stippling.

Scalp Stippling is a huge market now in the USA being almost as big as Microblading or Feather Touch Brow work produced with the hand tool and blade.

Saturday was Social Marketing and networking, followed by an afternoon session of Micro Needling and a demonstration of Eye Shadow by Dr.Dixon. I am not that fond of Eyeshadow but it looked fine.

The afternoon session involved presenters performing treatments on members.

Sunday consisted of 3 different presenters on Microblading for hair strokes with the hand tool blade, this being the area we are concentrating on with Dr Dixon in March 2015 at

Page 12: ACT November 2014 Newsletter

Please find below some notes that were taken in no particular order and since arriving home this week, I have not had time to review the video I took as well…

1. The importance of wearing a uniform - All presenters agreed this was important as it only takes 30 seconds to make the first impression.

2. Apple stores run free seminars for your iPad and iPhones!

3. Wiping the forehead clean with alcohol and allow to dry. This gives the therapist a good grip and no slip when supporting the skin for Brow Microblading and machine work.

4. The China Pencil is used by most American therapists for drawing the hair prior to Microblading.

5. There is a pencil that can be used on every client for Brows as it adjusts to the clients skin tone. It is called the Universal Pencil.

6. Lip scrub wipes are available here in Australia from most Pharmacies. They are used to wipe the eyelids and lashes to give a clean skin area to work on. They are a moist tiny towel impregnated with a lotion, so dry off after use, no need to wash off.

7. Witch hazel mixed with water is a great aftercare (in salon) to help stop swelling.

8. Most presenters score the brow (no pre thumb), then apply the gel anaesthetic for 10minutes before starting their procedures. (I don’t know about that one)

9. The best presenters only go over each hair once and use the colour wash system, but you must ensure you are into the dermis to start with, if not it will not last. Many draw the hairs upwards when others draw them down, it really is personal preference.

10.Camouflage: when working on scar tissue that appears normal in texture and stable on the surface, never assume that what lies beneath is the same. Scar tissue can be deceiving in regard to the condition of the subcutaneous layer and surrounding area. A herpes scar on the lip can be undetectable on the surface but very damaged under the skin. Damaged to the point that it may retain only a small percentage of the pigment and can then look spotty after healing.

I know so many of you get asked about camouflage so I will if time allows, send over more information to Fiona from Affinity Alliance, who is putting together our November Newsletter.

If learning to work on scar, firstly start on body work, not the face.

I hope to have more information in our February issue of the ACT Newsletter. I look forward to seeing many of you on the Gold Coast where we will be covering Camouflage and Microblading. Please let me know if there are other areas you would like to be covered at the 2015 Seminar.

Regards

Donna Moody-Martin

DR LINDA DIXON Share the Joy of Semi-Permanent make-up and what has helped Linda succeed. An event not to be missed…

"Dr. Dixon is both a Dental Hygienist and a physician specializing in Anesthesiology. She attended the University of Hawaii School of Medicine in 1969 and graduated from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1972. She is a pioneer in permanent makeup beginning in 1979 when she requested to have her eyeliner tattooed at Skin Deep in Lahaina. They had never heard of such a thing but she promised to sit still while they tried to put a line around her eyelids without any pain control. That experience, both painful and minimally successful, started Dr. Dixon on the path to create pain control in permanent makeup in the mid-nineties. She bought her first tattoo machines from two brothers in New York in 1991 and has been practicing permanent makeup since 1995. She does approximately 20-30 cases per week and educates other permanent makeup professionals including her three apprentices. She discovered and developed the Dixon Technique which has begun to revolutionize the entire profession because it produces rich lipcolor, eyebrow hair-like strokes and smoky, smudgy eyeliner in less time with better color results." Dr. Dixon designs digital needles for Nouveau machines.”

Tricia Denic’s Story

I was reluctant to submit my tattooing examples for many years, concerned that I may be subject to critical remarks and feeling a little intimidated by others’ (great) work. Finally I worked up the courage in 2012 and was astounded to find that I actually won the advanced division.

What does this mean to me personally and to my business? Firstly, because the judge in 2012 was a renowned industry leader (Marcel Retjeins) [check spelling], I was benchmarked against not only the ACT member’s work, but a raft of criteria that Marcel had gathered from his may years’ experience. This gave me a lot more confidence and compelled me to want to strive for even better tattooing results, not only for myself but for my clients’ satisfaction. Secondly, after winning the award and advertising as such on facebook, in the local paper and on my web site, my business literally doubled.

Since then, I was chosen as Runner Up in 2013 and again, with minimal advertising and loads of ‘word of mouth’ referrals, my business soared.

I have only recently won the 2014 award but already I’m receiving bookings from all over WA, some from visiting Eastern States and even one from SA! My dream of working smarter by gradually phasing out my other beauty treatments is becoming a reality. I encourage all members to participate, not only for the chance at winning, but to have your work truly benchmarked as an aid to helping you improve. Don’t be intimidated! I feel many of my member’s work is better than mine and would love them to experience the excitement, success and confidence that I now feel whilst always retaining that little bit (a lot actually!) of humility!

Maureen Tonning’s Story

Maureen Tonning underwent breast cosmetic tattoo treatment with Donna Moody Martin. This is her experience…

Describe your journey, from diagnosis to the present.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer on the 5th March, 2003. I had found a lump on my right breast when we were in Surfers Paradise on holiday. I thought it would go away, but it never did. I remember sitting in my GP’s office waiting for the mammogram test results and feeling completely devastated at the news that it was breast cancer. My doctor referred me fairly quickly to Dr Owen Ung, I didn’t like him at all, but as I got to know him better, I realised it wasn’t him I didn’t like, but the message he was delivering to me. After I got to know him better, I found out he was a very caring doctor. Always there bright and early or even late at night to check on you.

At that time, I was on complete emotional overload, so stressed out, feeling quite anxious and having to make a lot of decisions in a very short period of time. My first operation was to have the lump removed and I discussed with my surgeon being able to keep the nipple (as the lump was right on the nipple). Unfortunately, I had a lot of DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ) cells scattered throughout the right breast and it was impossible to keep it, so I was scheduled for a mastectomy and insertion of tissue expander on the Tuesday after Easter.

I went to Rosehill Races for the first time and vowed it wouldn’t be my last. The whole weekend though, I had this terrible feeling of what was to happen, how I would feel, how I would look and how I would try and get my life back to how it was before. I am very much a “like to be in control” sort of person and I felt very much that everything was out of control. It took me a bit longer to recover from the mastectomy than from having the lump removed. I was quite apprehensive about looking at the area where my right breast had been. I cried as I looked like I did when I was a young girl and hadn’t yet developed breasts. I don’t think I will ever get used to the way my right breast looks now, but maybe I just need more time.

It was my daughters’ 18th Birthday, just a few weeks after the operation and I had promised her a birthday party. I remember discussing this all with Dr Ung and he told me I couldn’t be a superwoman and that perhaps I should delay it by a few weeks and have some of the party catered for, which I ended up doing. After the mastectomy, I couldn’t life anything heavy and I needed to do exercises to make sure I got the full use of my arm, especially after having had three lymph nodes removed. One of the hardest things I had to learn after having major surgery was that I would need to ask for help.

Page 20: ACT November 2014 Newsletter

Maureen Tonning’s Story cont…

The next thing I was hit with was that I needed to either have chemotherapy or my ovaries removed as the cancer was an oestrogen-dependent cancer. This particular decision took me longer. I knew I didn’t want to have chemo, but I was also hesitant to have my ovaries removed as I had already been experiencing (menopausal) hot flushes and knew I wouldn’t have the full scope of therapies due to the cancer.

My fears turned out to be valid as I have experienced very bad hot flushes since and am only now starting to get somewhere with it. All up, I was operated on five times in less than 18 months and I ended up feeling like I had been through the wringer!

After recovering from the mastectomy, I had fortnightly visits to see Dr Lam, my plastic surgeon, to have saline inserted into the expander to make my skin stretch so that an implant could be fitted where my breast used to be. Once the skin had been stretched enough, it was just a matter of waiting approximately three months for it all to settle down so that the implant could be done.

When I saw the implant, I remember thinking how wonderful it was to have a shape there again, and that I would be able to wear normal bras again. I ended up having to have the implant redone a second time as it was too high and I felt very self conscious about it. I had been okay whilst I kept myself busy but I also began to notice I was slipping into a very black depression that would take some extremely hard work to get through. With the help of a counsellor, I had to address a lot of issues I had buried about how I felt about myself, my childhood and my changed self image. Without the help of my family and friends, I truly don’t know how I would have gotten through it. There was a time when I couldn’t even go up the street unless one of my daughters was with me as I was scared to be by myself. I had been experiencing nightmares about the breast being removed and to this day, I still think I had post traumatic stress syndrome, but was told it was anxiety and depression. I felt that if it weren’t for my two beautiful daughters and caring husband, that I would have simply given up.

I would cry and ask my counsellor why I had been diagnosed with breast cancer and why was it taking me so long to get back on top of everything. Her reply was always that I would find out why as I progressed down the track. She was right! Much further down the track, I noticed I began to feel almost euphoric about little things, that I had developed more confidence, that I realised I had made new friends along the way ( I am convinced to this day that some of them are angels sent to look after me) that people could no longer walk over me, that I would stand up for myself and that life seemed a lot more precious than it had before.

What made you decide to have an areola and nipple tattooed after your breast reconstruction? I decided to have the areola tattooed as I didn’t feel I could go back into hospital for a skin graft nipple reconstruction.

Page 21: ACT November 2014 Newsletter

Maureen Tonning’s Story cont…

I had already been in five times and felt quite traumatised by the idea of having to go in again. Dr Lam recommended Donna Moody Martin from Australian Cosmetic Tattoo College and I thought the tattoo seemed a more straightforward method, with fewer side effects. Once I met Donna and saw photos of the finished result, I was certain that I had made the right decision.

How much of a difference does it make to your wellbeing and sense of self to have your areola/nipple restored? It just makes me feel better about myself and that the scar is not the total focus of my right breast anymore. I am no longer just looking at a very long scar across my chest but at a nipple that in lots of ways resembles the one I lost. I also feel that my journey is coming to an end and that this chapter can be closed soon and put behind me.

How many sessions have you had, and how many more to complete the procedure? I had two sessions. The first time, the tattoo faded quite a bit, but with the second application, the tattoo remained the colour it was meant to be. I hope this year to have some work done on the scar if we can get it to look more faded and less obvious.

Are you happy with your choice and the result? Yes, very happy. I did experience a bit of pain due to the implant being too tight and consequently pressing on the nerves, but now, when I look at my right breast, I feel a lot happier with how it looks. The nipple tattoo takes my eye away from the scar and in general makes me feel happier with how I look.

What would you say to other women in a similar situation who may be considering areola tattooing? I would tell them to be brave and go for it. The results, whilst not quite the same as the skin grafting areola, are still very good and definitely make you feel more complete. In my case, when I look at my breasts, my focus is no longer on the scar, but on the nipple that has been tattooed there and how great it looks…
