Spring Semester Alaska Alive! with Father Michael Oleksa Tuition and technology fees (Tier 1/Tier 2) $420 / $470 APU EDUC 59500 • 3 credits • Materials: $20

Join Father Oleksa for three evening and weekend sessions of Alaska Alive! at the BP Energy Center in Anchorage. Face-to-face sessions are February 25,27,and 28. Online follow-up work for this course is completed with instructor Sharon Bandle by April 17.

In Alaska Alive! you will learn about Alaska’s history and the history of education in the state from one of Alaska’s most dynamic presenters. Explore the culture of the Native peoples of Alaska and the connections between the environment and emigrations.

Father Michael Oleksa, PhD., came to Alaska in 1970 from New York at the invitation of the Alutiiq village of Old Harbor on Kodiak Island. Over the next 40 years he served as a Russian Orthodox priest in over a dozen Alaska Native villages, Juneau and Anchorage. Recognized as an "Elder" by the Alaska Federation of Natives, a Distinguished Public Servant by the Board of Regents of the University of Alaska, and honored by the Alaska State Legislature and the National Governors Association, Dr. Oleksa is a storyteller who seeks to foster greater understanding across boundaries of race and culture. He has presented to new educators through ASDN for more than 20 years.

Summer Classes with Father Oleksa

Communicating Across Cultures Tuition and technology fees (Tier 1/Tier 2) $420 / $470 EDUC 59200 • 3 credits • Alaska Pacific University Materials: $50 What's a culture? What's your culture? Do you have a culture? Everyone does. The best definition of culture is "the way you see the world." But you can't SEE the way you see the world. Your own culture is always invisible to you. We can look at other people's cultures, but we can't articulate our own very well. Rev. Dr. Michael Oleksa's presentations are devoted to a discussion of cultures and how they affect us as educators. This course is the product of many years of experience in rural communities as well as years of research. It is especially designed to give the participant grounding in the cultural differences that often create miscommunication among Alaskans.

While most professional learning on classroom management focuses on keeping kids in their seats and giving good directions, here are three webinars that explain how to lead a class that is differentiated to individual students’ needs.

The nation’s top authority on differentiated instruction, Dr. Carol Ann Tomlinson, teams up with educator and consultant Dr. Marcia Imbeau to investigate what you need to deal with time, space, materials, groups, and strategies in ways that balance content requirements with multiple pathways for learning.

Webinar 1 - What’s the Game Plan for Managing a Differentiated Classroom?

As classrooms become more and more academically diverse, it’s progressively more important for teachers to grow in comfort and skill with teaching that responds to varied learner needs. In this first of three sessions on leading and managing a differentiated classroom, we’ll examine the fundamental goals of differentiation and principles that should guide classroom management for effective differentiation. We’ll also think about what it means and how it looks to prepare students for their roles in making differentiation work, no matter the grade level or content area.

Webinar 2 - How Do I Handle “Hot Spots” in a Differentiated Classroom?

Many teachers have concerns about potentially “sticky” aspects of a flexibly managed classroom—student movement around the classroom, noise, effective use of

small instructional groups, distributing and collecting materials, how students get help when the teacher is busy working with peers, starting and stopping class or activities within a class smoothly, and so on. This second of three sessions on leading and managing a differentiated classroom will focus on ways in which teachers handle these and other elements of flexible classroom management in ways that support and enhance student learning.

Webinar 3 - What are Basic Routines and Pointers for Managing a Differentiated Classroom?

Effective management in a differentiated classroom is primarily a matter of a teacher understanding classroom goals, planning systematically to achieve those goals, and working with students to establish routines that support the goals. In this third of three sessions on leading and managing a differentiated classroom, we’ll look at how to set an effective classroom tone, getting to know students as individuals, establishing classroom rules and routines, using anchor activities, and staying organized.

Target Audience The content will be relevant to all K-12 educators, as well as content area teachers and administrators.

University Credit One optional university credit is available for an additional fee of $90. You must participate in all webinars, complete short follow-up assignments and an application paper. Credit registration will take place after the first webinar.

College and Career Readiness: Successfully Preparing Our Students for the 21st Century Webinar Series with Steve Edwards

Dates: February 12, March 19, April 2 and 8 Time: 3:45-5:45 AKST Cost: $150 per person group rate for Tier 1 Districts and Organizations $175 per person group rate for Tier 2 Districts and Organizations $225 per person for all others Scholarships are available for the first 25 registrants from Anchorage School District

This webinar series explores the realities of the rapidly changing, globalized world and the paradigm shift in education required to adequately prepare our students to face those realities. Internationally recognized author and presenter, Dr. Steven Edwards, will focus on college and career readiness in a global context, strategies for a successful paradigm shift, and techniques to help your team and students think like entrepreneurs.

Webinar 1 - College and Career Readiness

Being competitive and successful in the world’s changing global economy requires our students to possess a new set of skills. This session will explore what it means to be college and career ready in a globalized world and provide fresh perspective on what qualities translate into student success.

Webinar 2 - The Paradigm Shift

Students need to be prepared to thrive in a rapidly changing world and not just be effective test takers. It is no longer sufficient to simply be good at pencil and paper tasks; students need to know how to apply concepts and skills in real-world settings. This session provides participants with strategies to help link experiences, learning, and knowledge to better engage students during school hours.

Webinar 3 - Students and Educators as Entrepreneurs

A wider scope of learning experiences at school is needed to inspire students to innovate, create, and eventually become entrepreneurs in the global economy. This session explores the characteristics of an

entrepreneur, how they translate into qualities students need to flourish, and how to tackle naysayers.

Webinar 4 - Changing Workplace

The workplace is no longer a strictly 9-5, corporate experience. This session delves into the evolution of the employee, the roles of educational administrators and teachers, and how teacher training and the learning experience need to be redesigned to reflect the changing workplace.

University Credit One optional university credit is available for an additional fee of $90. You must participate in all webinars, complete short follow-up assignments and an application paper. Credit registration will take place after the first webinar.
