Barbara Sawrey is Director-at-Large of the American
Chemical Society’s Board of Directors and Chair of its
Professional and Member Relations Subcommittee on
International Strategy. She also serves as the
Associate Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate
Education at the University of California, San Diego.
Barbara Sawrey, Presenting
Barbara received her Ph.D. jointly from the University of California, San
Diego and San Diego State University.
Her research focuses mainly on chemical education, winning her the
American Chemical Society Award for Encouraging Women in the
Chemical Sciences in 2002. She focuses on development of computer-
based multimedia to assist student learning of complex scientific processes
and concepts.

The American Chemical Society (ACS) Board of Directors and its
Professional and Member Relations Subcommittee on
International Strategy and Office of International Activities are
pleased to announce the launch of the ACS International Center
(IC). The IC is the first curated, searchable web database of its kind
listing international exchange and collaboration opportunities in
chemistry and the related sciences (grants, scholarships, internships,
professional training, and more). At launch it contains information on
over 350 programs in 13 host countries, sorted across 6 levels of

Peter Kerrigan has been Deputy Director of DAAD NY, and
Director of Marketing and Development of DAAD North
America since August 2006. The German Academic Exchange
Service (DAAD) is a publicly-funded independent organization of
higher education institutions in Germany. Each year DAAD, its
Regional Branch Offices, its Information Centers, and DAAD
Professors around the globe provide information and financial
support to over 67,000 highly-qualified students and faculty for
international research and study.
Located in New York, San Francisco, and Toronto, DAAD North America is here to advise
students, faculty and current DAAD fellows in the US and Canada. Before working at
DAAD, Peter worked as Assistant Director of the Higher Education Resource Group
at the Institute of International Education. He received his M.A. (Diplom), Political
Science (International Relations) from Freie Universität Berlin.

Max Voegler was appointed Director of the DFG’s North America
Office/Washington in October 2010. He joined the German Research Foundation
(DFG) in 2005 as a program officer in the Academic Libraries and Information
Systems division, where he coordinated policy among European research funding
organizations in the fields of Information and Communication Technology. In 2009, he
moved to the International Affairs division to head the section on North America and
Research Marketing. He holds a PhD in European history from Columbia University,
where he wrote a dissertation on religion, liberalism and the social question in the
nineteenth-century Habsburg Monarchy.

Dr. Cathleen Fisher is President of the American Friends of the
Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The American Friends
of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is the professional
partner of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in the
United States.
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany promotes academic
cooperation between excellent scientists and scholars from abroad and from Germany.
Before working for the American Friends, Cathleen was Deputy Director of the
American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS) at Johns Hopkins
University. She chairs the Advisory Council of the German Center for Research and
Innovation and served on the American Chemical Society’s International Center
Task Force. Cathleen holds a Ph.D. in Government and Politics from the University of
Maryland, a Masters in International Relations from the Johns Hopkins University
School of Advanced International Studies.
