Security’s Role

 

Security gets caller information, name, phone and department.

Security gets patron description, location and type of weapon, if known.

Security calls 911.

Security calls the librarian in charge, maintains visual contact via cameras and security officers, and the shift supervisor or officer in

charge responds to Security Center to assist with phones and calling departments.

If you cannot leave, take shelter and call 911

What Should I Do If I am Confronted with a Weapon?

Being confronted by a person with a weapon requires the following: 

Stay Calm. If possible signal for help.

Focus on the individual and not the weapon.

Try to negotiate.

Stall for time by keeping the person talking.

Do not argue. Do what you are told to do.

Do not try to be a hero and grab the weapon unless you are trained to do so.

Escape quickly, quietly and safely if you are presented with an opportunity to do so.
