Nancy CassuttWhy journalism is still importantNancy Cassutt believes
a student who wants
a job in the journalism
fi eld, any facet of it,
must understand the
craft; they can always
be taught the technol-
ogy. Technology will
enable them to do their
work but it won’t do the work for them.
Cassutt has worked in Twin Cities media
for more than 20 years. She has worked in
management roles at KSTP-TV and WCCO-TV
in the Twin Cities and before that she was a
reporter in small television markets around the
Midwest.
Nine years ago she joined Internet Broadcast-
ing and became a part of the online media
world. She is now a Senior Vice President
at Internet Broadcasting and responsible for
leading some of the nation’s largest broadcast
media companies through their transition into
the digital world.
She graduated from St. Cloud State University
with a double major in Speech Communication
and Mass Communication. She said, “The key
to the start of my career was an internship I
did my senior year at WCCO–TV. I worked for
the investigative team for 6 months — full time
— for free. That investment of time led me to
my professional successes.”
Susan AlbrightYes, Virginia, There Is a Future in Journalism — We Just Don’t Know What It IsSusan Albright is Co-
Managing Editor of
MinnPost.com, a Min-
nesota news Web site
launched in November
2007. Among her
MinnPost responsibili-
ties are Greater Minnesota coverage, the Arts
Arena, Community Voices and science, health
and environmental news.
From 1993 to 2007 Albright was the editor of
the Minneapolis Star Tribune’s editorial pages.
Under her leadership, the editorial staff won
numerous state and national awards, insti-
tuted several innovations in online opinion,
and launched a Sunday section, the Opinion
Exchange.
From 1993–2007 she was the editor of the
Star Tribune’s editorial pages, and she led
the editorial pages of the Arizona Daily Star in
Tucson from 1985 to 1993. Susan is a past
president of the 600-member National Confer-
ence of Editorial Writers.
Susan has appeared on such programs as
National Public Radio’s “All Things Consid-
ered” and PBS’ “NewsHour with Jim Lehrer”
to discuss current events, and is a frequent
public speaker in the Twin Cities. She has
served twice as a juror for the Pulitzer Prizes.
Locally, she serves on the executive commit-
tee of the World Press Institute.
She has a master’s degree in public com-
munications from Syracuse University’s S.I.
Newhouse School of Public Communications.

Compete to be Best of the Midwest!Bring copies of any edition from this year for
the convention Best of Show competition.
Categories are divided by frequency of
publication as well as two- and four-year
distinctions; special issues/sections and for
Web sites. Do not send entries to ACP prior
to the convention. Entries will be accepted
only on site.
In addition to ACP Best of Show for general
newspaper excellence, student delegates
to this convention can also compete for
individual awards in news writing, editorial/
commentary writing, feature writing, sports
writing, single-page design, news photog-
raphy and multimedia package. Only one
entry per person per category. Students
must be registered at the convention to en-
ter the contest. Entries are due by 10 a.m.
Saturday. Use the enclosed form or down-
load from the ACP Web site. Submit URLs
to Kathy Huting at [email protected]
between Feb. 1 and Feb. 11. After Feb. 11,
submit URLs on site.
Saturday Critique SessionsHow are you doing compared to your peers
or professionals? Want honest feedback so
you can do better work? Saturday’s pro-
gram has critique sessions for writing and
overall newspaper content/visuals. Bring
samples of a story for a writing critique or
a couple issues for an overall newspaper
critique. Then listen and learn to get some
practical advice and answers.
Résumé/Clips ReviewWe’re bringing in hiring experts to look at
your clips, résumés, and even help you with
mock interviews. Find out what you need to
add to your portfolio, how to get an editor’s
attention, what that company looks for in a
candidate and more.
Networking/Exchange LoungeIn addition to your contest entries, bring
extra copies — a couple dozen or so —
of your best papers, ad rate cards and
marketing materials for display in the lounge
and to exchange with other students. This
is your opportunity to see what your peers
are reporting and get some design, cover-
age and sales ideas. We’ll set aside a spot
for networking and sharing of information
throughout the convention.
Editor/Adviser LuncheonAdviser delegates and current, former or
future student editors are invited to an
informal luncheon hosted by ACP at 12:15
p.m. Saturday in the hotel. Luncheons are
$25 per person and can be purchased on
the convention registration form. It’s another
chance to network with your colleagues and
enjoy some excellent food.
Minneapolis: City of Many OptionsMinneapolis is recognized as one of the
cultural and entertainment capitals of the
United States, a modern city perched on
the west side of the Mississippi River. Its
downtown area is the heart of the Twin
Cities, and many downtown buildings are
linked by enclosed overhead “skyways.”
The convention hotel, the Marriott City
Center, is conveniently close to everything
downtown and connected to the skyways
(so even if the weather’s not wonderful, you
can still have fun). Block E, the huge enter-
tainment complex across the street on First
Avenue, houses GameWorks, the Improv,
Hard Rock Café and other restaurants.
The Hiawatha Line light rail station one
block away will take you directly to the Mall
of America for as little as $1.75. Whether
you love music, theater or art, fi ne dining or
funky restaurants, big department stores or
unusual boutiques, Minneapolis has it all.
Get the latest convention updates at acp.studentpress.orgThe ACP Web site will feature any additions
and changes to the convention after this
brochure goes to press.
