Aston Community Group was formed in 2001 with the objective of co-ordinating information relating to activity in the village from the array of groups and organisations. For the first few years the groups met once a quarter to update each other of their programme for thefollowing three months. The aim was to avoid unfortunate clash of dates which potentially reducedtheir effectiveness. The ACORN Newsletter was then created as a vehicle to inform residents of futureactivity in a more structured way, rather than each group sending round their A4 flyer. The overallpolicy is to promote groups, organisations and small businesses in Aston on Trent and those whobring a service to the village.

Robin Gibbard designed the first cover in black ink portraying an Oak Tree with all of the villagegroups shown on leaves hanging from the branches. Now in its 15th year the Acorn has evolved to

what it is today, providing every home in Aston on Trent with a quarterly update of village life, packed with information concerning our social and business community.

ASTON PLAYERSWe are back in the swing again with rehearsals underway, cast selected, music chosen and sets designed. We have a brandnew pantomime, Rapunzel for our January offering and it promises to be a funny show. We are still in the early stages andplanning but we are enjoying it. The children under the direction of Barbara Upton and Rachel Chamberlain are well aheadwith dance routines with a scattering of squirrel, ghosts and spiders and are having a great time.We are raising funds once again for Rainbows Hospice and Treetops Hospice. Having recently visited the Rainbowsfacility at Loughborough for their open day reaffirmed my determination to continue to support this Hospice.Make a date in your diaries for the last two weekends in January for some magic and hilarity in the Tower with Rapunzel.

As from the beginning of September, our Minister- Rev John, was appointed as Superintendent Minister for TheNational Forest East Circuit of The Methodist Church. This is an area covering Ashby, Coalville, Kegworth, CastleDonington and Melbourne, and their surrounding villages. He insists that this won't change him- it simply meanshe will have greater responsibilities-AND may gain a few more grey hairs, but that he will delegate as much aspossible. We are pleased for him, and delighted to have such a good leader who is passionate about our LordJesus, warm-hearted, encouraging, a good listener, good fun, AND talented.Christmas is now looming large on the horizon. Preparations are underway for special services and events. TheChristmas Party will be on Wednesday December 14th from 3.30 to 6pm and will include a game, raffle, amixed programme of music and entertainment, carols, and of course a sumptuous buffet tea. Friends of Aston Brickyard PlantationBy the time this goes to print we shall have finished or be well under way in creating our wildlife pond. Withgenerous donations of time and materials the shallow pond will create a new environment for amphibians, insects and flora to further increase our biodiversity. If you are walking on site with young children please ensurethey don’t stray too close to the water’s edge. The pond, together with our new 10 year site management planmeans we now have the opportunity to apply for Natural England’s Local Nature Reserve status, thus creatingAston’s own registered wildlife site; all achieved within less than four years of the FAB group forming and workingwith Derbyshire County Council’s Countryside Services.Regrettably we have experienced some mindless vandalism on site with items destroyed, saplings kicked overand a habitat pile set on fire. The same irresponsible youths also caused much damage in the woodland usedby the archery group. The police have been informed and are following up positive leads. We hope this was a‘one-off’ incident but measures are now in place to identify or prevent any future incidents. If you see anysuspicious behaviour whilst on site please contact the police on 101or 999 if considered urgent

The War Memorial Hall continues to be a hub of activity within the village, providing an affordable facility enjoyed by allages from toddlers to pensioners and hosting a wide variety of activities. On the maintenance front, we’ve had a busysummer; the lighting in the old hall has been updated with energy-saving LED units and more recently the majority of theoriginal sewers were replaced. In both cases the work was carried out by local contractors. We must not forget that the hall is a memorial to the men of Aston & Weston who gave their lives in the two World Wars.To honour their memory I hope there will be a good turn-out for Remembrance Sunday on Sunday 13th of November.

The Hall is available to hire for private functions, subject to availability & booking conditions. Please contact our Booking Secretary Gail Smith (792541) for more details.

ASTON ON TRENT LOCAL HISTORY GROUPThe Archive group continues to work technical miracles with our hard-copy archive, scanning several thousandphotographs and documents into a digital format. Within a few weeks we hope to have a working system that will enableusers to enter a key word or phrase (eg ‘All Saints’ Church) which will instantly bring up every archive item relevant to thattitle. This means that anyone can discover more about their chosen village history subject and look at photos and documents. This digital conversion has not been an easy task and we pay tribute to the small team that has diligently worked for manymonths to bring this facility to fruition And of course, as is the way of history, archiving never stops…..We’re also looking for people who were born in the village or can be termed as long-term residents. We need yourmemories and stories of Aston past to create an aural record for the future. If you would like to chat about growing up inAston in an informal setting (perhaps coffee and cake or a pie and a pint) then contact Carole Bagnall 793196. This isn’t aninterview, just a structured pleasant chat to help us bring the past to life. Think about your growing up, school, work, familylife. To you it might just seem ordinary. To us and future generations it’s a unique insight into village life. Can you spare half an hour?

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION - ASTON & WESTON BRANCHOnce again I am writing for your support for the two important events in the Royal British Legion calendar, duringREMEMBRANCETIDE. We start with the poppy appeal which as you all know symbolises respect and pride for those menand women who sacrificed their lives for our freedom and on behalf of the RBL I ask you to give generously. The second part of remembrancetide is our annual Remembrance Day Parade which this year falls on Sunday 13thNovember. This year we were saddened when our Standard Bearer over the past few years resigned due to family reasonsand the branch would like to acknowledge the professionalism Adrian displayed. However we are extremely fortunate thatone of our members and an ex serviceman Devin Bethell has stepped in to carry on the high standard required for this mostimportant role in the branch.

The Aston & Weston branch members are proud of the tradition carried out in the village of Aston and with the help ofthe various groups and supporters hope you the public will continue to help make our parade the success it deserves.

Last but not least we ask for your patience while certain roads in Aston are closed for a short time, details of the closures are displayed on telegraph poles in and around the parade route"

8Our annual Garden Party in August was enjoyed by all, and we celebrated the Aston WI birthday at a special “red, whiteand blue” dinner in October, as well as celebrating Her Majesty’s birthday … again! Our stall at the Medieval Market went with a bang, with several ladies running our cake and craft stall - thank you to everyonewho stopped by!Our holiday to Yorkshire was a great success. We visited the cellars at the Treasurer’s House in York, searching for Romansoldiers! The house at Renishaw was a favourite and we enjoyed Betty’s teas in York and Harrogate, as well as visitingHarewood House (where “Victoria” was filmed). All the ladies had a great time and are already looking forward to nextyear’s trip to Northumberland.Coming up we have our trip to see “Chatsworth at Christmas” with the Nutcracker theme andthe Christmas Market, as well as our theatre trip to see “9-5”.Why not coming along and make some friends! We invite a speaker to most meetings – recent topics included Buddhism,Medical Detection Dogs and Flowers. Coming up in November is “Catching burglars with chemicals” with Paul Newsham.

We meet at the Memorial Hall on the second Tuesday of each month (except August) at 7:30PM.New members and guests are always welcome; see you there!

The darker nights are now drawing in when criminals take advantage as there is less chance of them being seen when theyare going about their evil business.Protect your property and belongings by installing energy efficient, movement detection and outside lighting especially tothe rear of your home. Thieves don’t like being seen! Keep windows shut, external doors locked at ALL times and set yourburglar alarm even if leaving your home for a few minutes. Purchase an inexpensive, simulated TV device from yourNeighbourhood Watch so it looks like the TV is still on and being watched when you are out. Simple precautions will helpto prevent the heartache of your home and property being burgled.INCIDENTS (reported to the Police since the last Acorn)July1. Several reports of illegal, nuisance motorbikes.2. Yates Avenue non dwelling burglary.August1. Nuisance motorbikes, quad bike and red/black scooter all driving dangerously on several occasions. The Police haveacted and seized/crushed several illegal motorbikes.2. Posey Lane entry forced to shed.3. Boxes of magazines stolen early morning from the Post Office.4. Lady driver verbally assaulted/threatened on Derby Road.5. Pressure washer stolen from insecure garage on Chellaston Lane.6. Weston Road break-in via rear window. Jewellery and I-phones stolen.September1. Weston Road in the early hours van broken into and tools stolen.2. Two break-ins at Derby Road Archery Club and items stolen.3. Moor Lane ground floor window forced but fortunately no entry.4. 3 x 999 calls to Weston Road accident where car left the road when driver taken ill at the wheel.5. Fire started at the Brickyard Plantation. Offenders captured on CCTV and identified.6. Car crashed at Derby Road/London Road junction and burnt out.VILLAGE CCTVFollowing concerns and with the help of a donation from Neighbourhood Watch the Parish Council has now agreed to replacethe obsolete, poor quality village CCTV camera. A state of the art high definition version will be installed shortly. This hasthe ability to clearly recognise faces and vehicle registration numbers, which will greatly assist the Police in investigatingand solving local crime.DERBYSHIRE POLICE & CRIME COMMISSIONER (PCC)Hadyal Dhindsa PCC for Derbyshire visited Aston during the Well-dressing weekend and is taking an interest in the village. This is possibly due to our vigorous campaigning to save the Police Alert System which is now up and running again and isbeing run from his office. There will be a Public Meeting in the village to be arranged by the Parish Council when you willhave the opportunity to ask Hadyal any questions or express any concerns you may have about policing in Aston.NHWATCH STREET SIGNSIn the summer the damaged/missing street signs fitted to posts around the village were replaced with fresh new ones. Criminalscan now be well aware that there are over 1000 pairs of eyes watching them as they pass through Aston on Trent.POST OFFICE PARKINGVillagers are witnessing more and more “near misses” due to illegal and dangerous parking directly outside the post officedoorway. The offending vehicles are apparently driven by locals. Please ensure that your vehicle is parked responsibly and in compliance with the law ……at least 10 metres from WestonRoad junction and PAST the dropped kerb outside the Post Office front door. This will enable other vehicles andpedestrians to pass safely.

IF IT APPEARS UNUSUAL IT MOST PROBABLY IS.Note descriptions, colour and registration number of vehicle and report immediately to the Police.

Pre-School and Playgroup to dig out their old photos, scan them and send them with details (like year taken)to astonontrentpreschool.gmail.com. We are also trying to track down how far children from Pre-School have gone.

So, if you know someone that went to Pre-School and is now in deepest darkest Peru or up Mount Everest, could youask them to contact us on the email address above. Thank you!
