3Congressional Leadership Conference 2019

I’m so excited to welcome you to ACOG’s 37th Annual Congressional Leadership Conference, the President’s Conference. This is the biggest CLC we’ve ever had, thanks to your passion and dedication. Whether you’ve attended dozens of CLCs or this is your very first, congratulations on being here today. I hope your experience is fun, educational, and empowering.

I know each one of you worked incredibly hard to get to where you are today. Becoming an ob-gyn requires long nights, endless shifts, countless hours of training and studying – it takes years of hard work for us to learn how we can provide the best possible care to our patients. We put in this time and effort because we care deeply about our work, our life’s calling. Now, at this critical time, we need to do everything we can to make sure that our patients, the women of this country, can get the care they need. We’re here in Washington to help ensure that access!

Access means having enough—and good enough—ob-gyn care in rural areas to meet the maternity care needs. Access means protecting ob-gyns from expensive frivolous lawsuits that chase them out of practicing obstetrics or prevent them from practicing where they want to serve. Access means providing the patients in your waiting room with the services they need, even if they have pre-existing conditions. Access means ensuring that women and their families can afford their premiums and prescription drugs.

Over the next three days, our CLC will give us access to our U.S. Senators and Representatives. We’ll learn how to use access to Congress, state legislators, social media, and candidates—to improve women’s health care nationwide. We’ll hear from experts on ACOG’s legislative priorities, and we’ll have the chance to test our advocacy skills and try out new techniques.

I have no doubt that everyone here has something wonderful to contribute, and I know that even CLC veterans learn something new every year. To help us all grow and improve together, I hope you’ll take an opportunity over these next few days to step out of your comfort zone. Whether that means volunteering to make “the ask” during your Hill meeting, signing up for Twitter, or even just introducing yourself to an ob-gyn you haven’t met before, please join me in taking this extra step to help us all become better advocates for our practices and our patients.

THANK YOU AGAIN FOR BEING HERE. TOGETHER, WE’RE MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR THE FUTURE OF OUR SPECIALTY.

Lisa M. Hollier, MD, MPH
