There are many myths about the cause of acne.Some people think that the incidence of acne ishigher if you eat foods like chocolate or Frenchfries. Others think that the presence of acne isdue to poor hygiene. Neither is true.

Acne is caused by the body’s increased productionof the hormone androgen (produced by both menand women), which stimulates the sebaceousglands to produce more oil. The increased production of oil causes the pores to becomeblocked, so that the oil cannot come up to the skinsurface. The acne itself is an infection caused byskin bacteria that feed on and break down this oil.

As the bacteria multiply, waste products andsebacic acid are created, and the sebaceous glandbecomes inflamed – causing what is known as ablackhead, a whitehead or a pimple.

But now – with the clinically tested and safeEllipse treatment – help is at hand.

How does Ellipse treatment work?

The Ellipse operator guides the light from theflash-lamp to the treatment area. The uniqueEllipse I2PL system carefully filters this light in twoways to ensure that only light with the correctcharacteristics (wavelengths) is allowed to reachyour skin.

The light that is allowed through is absorbed byhaemoglobin, which is the red pigment in blood.The light from the flash-lamp heats up the haemoglobin in the fine blood vessels that supplythe sebaceous glands. This causes a minor injuryto the sebaceous glands and slows down theoverproduction of oil that leads to acne.

Ellipse treatment works by

How acne develops

A normal hair and sebaceous gland (1) can become partially

blocked (2). Bacteria called P. Acnes live on the sebum and

produce fatty acids. The body responds by blocking the gland’s

exit to the skin (3). Sometimes the mixture of hair protein, oil

and fatty acids damages the walls of the follicle and causes

inflammation (4).

How long does an Ellipse treatment take?

The glass prism within the Ellipse applicator thatguides the light to the skin is 10mm by 48mm, soa large area can be targeted in one flash of light. Ittakes approximately 60 flashes to treat the fullface. Including consultation and preparation, youshould count on 20 minutes in the clinic. A typicalcourse of therapy includes four treatments, threeweeks apart.

Can I be treated?

If you have permanent acne you will benefit froma treatment. The best results are achieved oninflammatory acne – best known as those red,aching, raised pimples. It is important your skin isrelatively pale at the time of the treatment, as toomuch light will be absorbed by a dark complexion.

Does it hurt?

Tolerance of pain is very individual from person toperson. No anaesthetics are required, and manypatients describe the discomfort as a warmingsensation similar to the feeling one has after a day onthe beach. The lighter the skin colour, the less pain.

Do I need to take special precautions

before and after treatment?

The light used is completely safe, visible light, sono special precautions are necessary. Potentiallyharmful wavelengths are removed by the uniqueEllipse Dual Mode Filtering system.

The Ellipse acne treatment is a combination therapy. In the clinic you will be given a tube ofadapalene cream or gel (in most countries brandedDifferin®) to apply once every evening in the acne-affected area. Adapalene works by reducingthe inflammation caused by acne, and by reducing(normalising) the thickness of the skin in the treated area. You will learn more from the doctor who will prescribe adapalene.

Generally, no post-treatment care is immediatelynecessary, but people with sensitive skin maybenefit from applying an ice pack to the faceimmediately after treatment or applying an ointment prescribed by the doctor.

What can I expect?

You may notice some general redness on the facefollowing the treatment. If you have sun-damagedskin, some of the pigmented spots may turn darkerand eventually disappear.

Because the bacteria are difficult to eradicatecompletely, your doctor will probably recommendthat you continue using adapalene cream for somemonths after the Ellipse acne treatment has ended.Should you suffer from a future acne outbreak,the treatment with Ellipse can be repeated.

Although results vary from person to person, initial results from a recent clinical study showthat 58% of acne lesions disappeared with theEllipse treatment, compared to 33% improvementwith topical cream alone. Please talk to yourphysician about what results you can expect.

How can I be sure Ellipse is safe and effective?

Clinical trials documenting Ellipse’s safety andeffectiveness are carried out by leading doctorsprior to the release of the product.
