On Apri l 4, 2013, the f inal stage of the Miss Universe Slovak Republic contest was held at the National Tennis Center of Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.

The organisers chose Light Sky’s moving beam and headlights from the Bumblebee F330 series, which was manufactured by Fly Dragon Lighting Equipment Co., Ltd, the leading stage l ighting company in China. Delivering superior speed and rich coloured l ighting, Light Sky’s 100 moving beam l ighting f ixtures created gorgeous gobo effects to the del ight of the audience.

Miss Universe Slovak Republic 2013 was won by 20-year-old Jeanette Borhyová from Danube Ivanka, who represented her country in the 62nd Miss Universe Pageant.

The M2 Club in SanYa, the most frequented club in the island and a renowned place among the Chinese nightl i fe scene, has recently undertaken a venue renewal project and upgrade of its sound reinforcement system.

The M2 managers were looking for a sound system that was capable of fulf i l l ing the club’s commitment in being ahead of its competit ion in the night entertainment industry. They needed a system different from tradit ional speakers, a system as innovative and impressive as its club – but above al l a system that does not disregard sound quality.

After considering several options avai lable on the market, the club management selected the French brand, Verity Audio, to supply the loudspeakers and power amplif iers for the new sound system. They discovered Verity Audio

“The CLUB212 is a double 12 inch two-way speaker specif ical ly designed for top end clubs requir ing the best possible sound performance. It mounts high-grade neodymium drivers and provides an enormously powerful SPL with an unmatched clean and clear sound at high levels. The M2 Club instal led 12 units of the CLUB212 speaker, powered by six units of the Verity Audio V4.25 4-channel amplif iers and matched with 30 subwoofer units. With its ful ly adjustable asymmetric high frequency horn, the CLUB212 al lowed the sound system engineers to evenly cover al l areas of the 500 square meter f loor.

From a visual design point of view, the white piano paint of the CLUB212 gave the l ighting engineers another tool to decorate the venue, as any l ight projected onto the speaker gets ref lected.

More than 390 sets of s tage l ights and equipment were used to create a fantasy dreamland, combined wi th a large LED d isp lay screen, a l i f t ing p lat form, an a i r t rack, a wave machine, a veh ic le p lat form, a t ransparent sky f i lm, a large sand pa int ing, a ho lographic pro ject ion, d ig i ta l lamps, st ructure pro ject ions and more.

GTD L ight ing worked wi th Songcheng Group for th is pro ject . Back in June 2013, Songcheng Group he ld a procurement b idd ing in Hangzhou, Zhe j iang Prov ince. The top three l ight ing manufacturers in China at tended and af ter three months of t r ia l and r igorous samples, compar isons and tests, the b idd ing went to GTD L ight ing. I t s tood out thanks to i ts la test products, such as the GTD-1500W SPOT, WASH and 230W smal l BEAM, which were off ic ia l ly unve i led in the new Grand Theatre of Songcheng.

ArKaos’ Stage Server created a spectacular three-dimensional overhead video wall at Belgium’s famous Pukkelpop Festival.

The annual Pukkelpop festival, held at Kiewit near Hasselt, is one of Belgium’s largest alternative music festivals, attracting over 60,000 festival-goers and second in size only to Rock Werchter.

This ‘progressive and contemporary’ musical event played host to around 200 bands on its eight stages over the three-day festival and showcased a wide variety of music that encompassed rock, pop, electronic, dance, hip-hop, punk and heavy metal. The eclectic l ine up for 2013 included top art ists Eminem, The Prodigy and Nine Inch Nails and world-class DJs including Mark Ronson, The Magician and Boys Noize.

The opening night party to the 28th Pukkelpop was the perfect event for ArKaos, Belgian media server and software manufacturer, to show off the power and

versati l i ty of its Stage Server in a spectacular l ight display created in one of the biggest pixelmapping applications to date.

The party kicked off in joyous style in the 30,000-capacity Boiler Room where festival-goers partied unti l 4am, under a cei l ing of pulsating patterns of l ight that formed waves and staccato mult i-coloured abstracts. The cei l ing effect was so impressive it even attracted the attention of national television, receiving coverage on VTM, which claimed “even the most loyal festival visitor never saw anything l ike this before”.

The dramatic cei l ing effects were the brainchi ld of Belgian design company, Arf & Yes, and were brought to l i fe by their l ighting designers, Phi l ippe Vanderheeren and Ignace D’haese using three-dimensional video animation.

Arf & Yes created what was effectively a huge three-dimensional video wall using 3,264 SGM LT 200 LED

the immense number of pixels involved (352,512 pixels in the main Boiler Room and a further 176,256 pixels in each of the two exterior zones) required a total of 500 universes. The decision was therefore made to divide the universes between the three ArKaos Stage Servers, two of them running 160 universes each and the third running 180 universes.

In addit ion to the spectacular cei l ing, the Boiler Room - which also became one of the eight show stages for the entire festival - proudly displayed an LED video wall behind the on-stage DJ booth. Here people continued to party from 11am to 4am daily beneath, and in front of one of the largest show elements of the festival. The DJ’s LED video wall was animated using a fourth ArKaos Stage Server playing custom video content provided by Arf & Yes. The four Stage Servers were synchronised using a Chamsys MQ100 desk with a side wing purely dedicated to the video operation. A second Chamsys MQ100 and wing were used to control the l ighting.

Al l ArKaos, SGM and Chamsys equipment was supplied by PRG EML Productions, and instal led and programmed by Arf & Yes operators, T imothy De Mets and Jonas Weyn.

“I was real ly impressed with how easy the ArKaos Stage Server Pro is to programme and the speed at which it operates,” said Vanderheeren. “The sheer scale of the Pukkelpop instal lat ion – one of the f irst to use 500 universes at once – shows this entry level machine is capable of doing a huge job control l ing one of the biggest pixel mapping instal lat ions ever! It is a very cost effective, affordable solution, is easi ly avai lable and has the security of excel lent support from the team at ArKaos.”

“We are del ighted with this application which is a prime example of what can be achieved with a l i tt le imagination and our very user-fr iendly technology,” said ArKaos Technical Sales and Support Manager, Toon Servaes. “We see this 3-dimensional application being used widely across clubs, large arenas, in commercial instal lat ions and, for example, shopping centres where it could be used to create an attractive roof. It’s a real eye catcher for al l events!”

3D Graphic tubes suspended from the cei l ing. Each SGM LED str ip is two-metres long, double-sided, with 54 RGB LEDs on each side at a pitch of 35mm. Each pixel can be individual ly addressed and control led using DMX/ArtNet.

Arf & Yes operator, T imothy De Mets, was able to pixelmap every pixel quickly and easi ly using three ArKaos Stage Server media servers running ArKaos MediaMaster Pro software in one of the biggest pixelmapping instal lat ions to date. This effectively gave 352,512 pixels to play with in its own unique location, becoming a piece of the ful l 3D image. The operators were then able to programme changes in colour, speed and three-dimensional animations to create the fabulous effects witnessed by the party-goers. The effects were then duplicated across two zones outside the Boiler Room.

The pixelmapping was streamed over ArtNet, which had a theoretical l imit of 256 universes of DMX. However,

Leading Ital ian TV Lighting Designer Massimo Castrichel la took less than a minute to decide that he wanted Robe’s ROBIN DLS profi le, LEDWash 1200 and LEDBeam 100 f ixtures on his l ighting r ig for the latest series of ‘Un Minuto Per Vincere’ (One Minute To Win).

The second season of the Ital ian version of the hugely popular US ‘Minute To Win It’ game show was recorded at the Auditorium del Foro Ital ico in Central Rome for national channel RAI. Contestants participate in a series of simple but frustratingly diff icult to achieve 60 second chal lenges that usual ly involve common household objects!

Castrichel la has worked for the prime Ital ian broadcaster for an impressive 35 years. He has also used Robe products in his work since 2004 and for this one – where 90 per cent of the l ighting is for effects – he chose 20 x Robe DLS Profi les, 12 LEDWash 1200s and 30 LEDBeam 100s along with other f ixtures – to l ight the show.

The idea was to make the set – designed by Mimma Ali ff i - and l ighting similar to the original format in the US show, but with some very distinctive touches of that famous Ital ian style and f lair.

The DLS f ixtures were r igged right above the centre of the set – where al l the games are played – and used for overhead l ighting and effects for which they looked excel lent on camera.

The LEDWash 1200s i l luminated the audience, a task for which they are extremely eff icient and the LEDBeam 100s were posit ioned al l around the back of the audience seating shooting forward, making great f i l lers for the wide crowd camera shots.

It was Castrichel la’s f irst experience working with the DLS f ixtures which were chosen for their power, brightness and versati l i ty and also to replace the ColorSpot 700E AT f ixtures that he used in the same posit ion for the f irst series in 2012.

He says: “The DLS is a great f ixture and a much better al l round choice – it is smaller, l ighter, brighter, consumes less power and is very quiet. The quality of the colours is excel lent and the framing shutters are fantastic.”

He also mentions that the colour temperature is very good and that the rel iabi l i ty of Robe general ly is another reason he continues to use the brand consistently. The One Minute To Win recording schedule is extremely t ight and no-one wants to be taking l ights down and having to f ix them!

The LEDBeam 100s are a favourite of his due to their t iny size, extreme speed and brightness. “You can see the beams clear and crisp even in saturated colours,” he commented.

The Robe f ixtures were al l supplied to RAI for the series by Rome based rental company, DIBI Technology.

Castrichel la worked alongside two Lighting Operators - Quintino Caci (spot l ights and profi les) and Ettore Amadoro (wash and set l ights) - both using Compulite Vector consoles and he, himself, ran al l the white l ights using a Compulite Spark.

Each year, before the start of the off icial NBA season, a selection of fr iendly pre-season games are played. In 2013, eight international games were held in Europe, Asia and South America.

XL Video, working for event producer, STS Touring Productions, supplied LED screens for the Oklahoma City Thunder v Philadelphia 76ers game at the Phones4U Arena in Manchester on 8th October.

The four f lown screens were situated in the centre of the arena, al lowing the audience on al l levels to have a great view of the fast-paced on-court action. The screens not only showed l ive action from the courtside cameras, but displayed score graphics, player profi les and other game information.

XL Video selected Pixled F-6 LED for the screen as its high resolution offered the audience excel lent picture qual ity. The product is also l ightweight and so made it easy to r ig from the arena roof.

A total of 336 ti les of F-6 were used for the screens. The chal lenge for XL was a short load-in t ime in which the crew had to unload, bui ld control and f ly the screen before the basketbal l court could be laid. The crew of Steve Grinceri, Gary Burchett, Colin Mudd, Rob Smith and Barry Minter, led by Project Manager, Mark Rooney, ensured that the screen was up with t ime to spare!

Rooney comments: “It was a pleasure to work with STS Touring on this event. The on-site team from al l the suppliers col laborated well to ensure the bui ld went smoothly. It was great to see the NBA bring two well-known US teams to the UK for this special game. We hope they’l l come back again!”

Broadcast audio special ist Red TX provided the technical faci l i t ies to capture the audio at this year’s Barclaycard Mercury Prize, which took place at London’s Roundhouse on October 30th.

Hosted by Lauren Laverne, this year’s Awards Show featured l ive performances by many of the 2013 shortl isted art ists including Arctic Monkeys, Laura Mvula, Jake Bugg, Rudimental and overal l winner James Blake.

Red TX worked closely with PA company Plus4Audio and Outside Broadcast company CTV to del iver television coverage of this prestigious event, which was broadcast on both More4 and Channel 4.

Barclaycard Mercury Pr ize Execut ive Producer Dan Ford says: “Red TX was commissioned to handle the broadcast audio because the company has a strong reputat ion for del iver ing great l ive sound. We worked with them last year and were very happy with the results they achieved. I t therefore made sense to invite them back as part of our tr ied and tested product ion team.”

For this event, Red TX supplied its Red II music recording truck, which is designed to cater for 3D and 7.1 surround sound productions. Sound Supervisor Simon Wall, now based at London’s The Hospital Club, has been mixing the audio for the Barclaycard Mercury Prize for a number of years and once again he was

Nesham says: “A great deal of preparation went into this show. We arrived at the venue on Monday 28th and spent the next three days sett ing up, rehearsing and carrying out extensive sound checks to make sure everything was perfect. There were two stages, each with 48 l ines of spl its that we plugged up to so that al l the inputs were avai lable on the desk at the same time. This enabled us to create a set-up for each part of the show, in which typical ly three bands were performing, so that Simon only had to recal l one set-up for each part and one snapshot for each band. Working this way also al lows Simon to l ine check al l the bands in each break, which gave us confidence as we could check that we had al l the inputs for each band before we started that part of the show.”

Hil lsong UNITED, the chart-topping worship band that rose out of the youth ministry of Sydney, Austral ia’s Hil lsong Church, recently wrapped up a U.S. summer arena tour in support of its 12th and latest ful l- length album, ZION. The outing, known as “WELCOMEZION”, picks back up with a second three-week leg of North American dates in November and wil l continue to be supported by Greenfield, Indiana-based Mid-America Sound, which has been supplying an L-ACOUSTICS K1 system for the tour.

The group’s summer jaunt, which stopped at a dozen cit ies in June, sold out shows in Phoenix (Grand Canyon University Arena), Dal las (Ver izon Theatre), Denver (Red Rocks Amphitheatre) and Chicago (Sears Centre Arena), averaging almost 7,000 people each night. Hi l lsong UNITED’s performance in Los Angeles at the Hol lywood Bowl welcomed more than 15,000 fans alone, and the overal l t icket tal ly for the tour exceeded 80,000 – a record-breaking total for the Austral ian worship group.

This tour marks the third year that Mid-America Sound, along with supplementary gear support from Cincinnati-based partner Loud & Clear, has been providing concert sound for Hil lsong UNITED, which switched from L-ACOUSTICS V-DOSC to K1 two years ago.

To create Lux Eucharist ica, an amazing dynamic audio visual show gracing Cologne Cathedral’s recent Eucharist ic Congress 2013, the management cal led on i l lumination art special ists Friedrich Förster and Sabine Weissinger of Casa Magica in Tuebingen, southern Germany. They, in turn, enl isted ETC Ion control desk expert, Matthias Strobel, to help programme the spectacular projections and colourful l ight.

“Control l ing the Selador Classic Vivid-R f ixtures and projection using Ion was the easy bit,” said Strobel. “The more chal lenging part was taking control of the cathedral’s very complex house l ight system with 1000+ channels via the Artnet protocol. The fact that we could organise it al l using the new Magic Sheets function, which comes with the latest Eos family software update, made things real ly simple.”

The event used the Selador LED fixtures along with large-scale scrol l ing projections from Pani projectors to art ist ical ly express the topic of the congress. Live music complemented the images and colours, dramatical ly highl ighting the gothic architecture.

The aim was to inspire and awe the 45,000 people attending the event, including 40 bishops.

Organised by the German Bishops’ Conference and hosted by the Archdiocese of Cologne, the f ive-day event this June included worship services both inside and outside the churches in central Cologne, along with theological discussions and lectures, a youth festival, and charitable projects. Each evening concluded with a service and stunning Casa Magica l ight and sound shows in the Cathedral.
