BIG DATA

WHAT IS BIG DATA?

Big data is an evolving term that describes any voluminous amount of structured, semi-

structured and unstructured data that has the potential to be mined for information.

Although big data doesn't refer to any specific quantity, the term is often used when

speaking about petabytes and exabytes of data.

Big data can be characterized by 3Vs:

The extreme volume of data, the wide variety of types of data and the velocity at which

the data must be must processed. Although big data doesn't refer to any specific quantity,

the term is often used when speaking about petabytes and exabytes of data, much of

which cannot be integrated easily.

Page 15: ACM activiti · (ICPC), and has sponsored some other events such as the chess match between Garry Kasparov and the IBM Deep Blue computer. ACM Student Chapter has been a part of PCCOE

12

Big data analytics is often associated with cloud computing because the analysis of large

data sets in real-time requires a platform like Hadoop to store large data sets across a

distributed cluster and MapReduce to coordinate, combine and process data from

multiple sources.

WHAT IS ITS SCOPE?

According to Forbes,

Demand for Computer Systems Analysts with big data expertise increased 89.9% and

85.40% for Computer and Information Research Scientists.

Demand for Python programming expertise increased 96.9% in big-data related positions.

There was a 123.60% jump in demand for Information Technology Project Managers

with big data expertise, and an 89.8% increase for Computer Systems Analysts.

Page 16: ACM activiti · (ICPC), and has sponsored some other events such as the chess match between Garry Kasparov and the IBM Deep Blue computer. ACM Student Chapter has been a part of PCCOE

13

BIG DATA IN INDIA

We don’t have a huge number of people who know Big Data, Since the Big data space is

evolving we estimate the numbers rise every year.

Page 17: ACM activiti · (ICPC), and has sponsored some other events such as the chess match between Garry Kasparov and the IBM Deep Blue computer. ACM Student Chapter has been a part of PCCOE

14

IT Companies are increasingly hiring a lot of Big Data professionals, As the whole

concept of Big data revolves around Software ,Hardware and Data, IT Companies are

developing their service offerings in this space, All Major players like IBM, Infosys,

Wipro, TCS etc. have some part to play in this area.

CONCLUSION

In the future we’ll be able to store and process more data than we can now.

The future looks very much like Hadoop, a framework for data storage and processing on

clusters of commodity hardware.

So as students of computer engineering, we should definitely work on improving our big

data skills.

15Discovering Life….

Life is a complex compound , a mixture of happiness , excitement,

enjoyment , enthusiasm , hard work , dedication , determination , sorrow , pain , fear ,

depression , love , friendship , money and the list goes on and on. Having all these

ingredients in the recipe of life is very essential, because having an experience with all

these ingredients will develop a wonderful ‘Dish of Life ’. Trying various permutations

and combinations of these ingredients to make the dish tastier is very important. That

means, analysing your life, your aims and goals will help you to be on the proper track of

life. Moving on in life irrespective of ups and downs and rising everytime you fall will

get you closer to your goals.

However, there is no exact formula for living a successful life , But yes!

There is a formula for living a life full of enjoyment and satisfaction .The way of

discovering that formula is

unique to everyone. Once you

have that formula or the key to

enjoyment and satisfaction, the

barriers of sorrow, pain and

depression will automatically

motivate you to achieve success

and aim higher. So a person who

enjoys life will definitely be

successful and satisfied but vice-

a-versa may not be always true.

“What matters is

not to add years to your life but to add life to your years”- Alexis Carrel, Absolutely true,

isn’t it?

The quality of life that you live matters a lot rather than the quantity. So live each and

every moment, second and hour of your life, utilise the ‘Gift of Life’ to the fullest

because

Life is something you won’t get back...

It is something you must cherish till you last...

As it is a gift given only once to all…

DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM AND APPLICATIONS

A database management system (DBMS) is a computer program designed to manage a

database, a large set of structured data, and run operations on the data requested by

numerous users. Typical examples of DBMS use include accounting, human resources and

customer support systems.

In short, a DBMS is a database program. Technically speaking, it is a software system

that uses a standard method of cataloguing, retrieving, and running queries on data. The

DBMS manages incoming data, organizes it, and provides ways for the data to be

modified or extracted by users or other programs.

Some DBMS examples include MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft Access, SQL Server,

FileMaker, Oracle, RDBMS, dBase, Clipper, and FoxPro. Since there are so many

database management systems available, it is important for there to be a way for them to

communicate with each other. For this reason, most database software comes with an

Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) driver that allows the database to integrate with

other databases.

Applications

Database is widely used all around the world in different sectors:

1. Banking: For customer information, accounts loans and banking transactions.

2. Airlines: For reservations and schedule information. Airlines were among the first to

use database in a geographically disturbed manner-terminals situated around the world

accessed the central database system through phone lines and other data networks.

3. Universities: For student information, course registrations and grades.

4. Credit card transactions: For purchases on credit cards and generation of monthly

statements.

5. Telecommunications: For keeping records of calls made, generating monthly bills,

maintaining balances on prepaid calling cards and storing information about the

communication networks.

6. Finance: For storing information about holdings, sales and purchase of financial

instruments such as stocks and bonds.

7. Sales: For customer, product and purchase information.

8. Manufacturing: For management of supply chain and for tracking production of items

in factories, inventories of items in warehouses/stores and orders for items.

9. Human Resources: For information about employees, salaries, payroll taxes and

benefits and for generation of pay checks.

The Song that Modifies The Memory

Words make you think. Music makes you feel. A song makes

you feel a thought.

Writing is certainly no cup of cake, but when it comes to

music my heart starts beating and those beats turn into words.

Music is life as everyone says but for me it is my family, my true

friend which abides by me for the ebb and flow of my life. A Song

describes the ballgame of life. The lyrics of the song are its roots

which when blended together gives the most delightful experience

to listen to that is music.

A song is something that is outlives all the sermons of

memory. There are different phases of our life which we go

through, on the similar track there are distinct songs which describe

these phases. Trance the genre of electronic dance music for the

young ones out there is the one that creates those vibes among the

juvenescence. Music is something that makes a joyful person

emotional and a sombre person cheerful.

Put on the headphones and sense the joy of music. Feeling

lone start the trance you like and groove yourself in the world of

music, and don’t worry about anything else. Life is a song- just sing

it. Turn on the 9XM’s and M’Tunes and just sing and dance as if

there will be no tomorrow, and feel on top of the air. This is the

strength of music.

If in the twilight of memory we should meet once more, we

shall speak once again together and you shall sing to me a deeper

song.

Weekly Newsletter

L

Work/life balance is at best an

elusive ideal and at worst a complete myth, today’s senior executives will tell you. But by making deliberate choices about which opportunities they’ll pursue and which they’ll decline, rather than simply reacting to emergencies, leaders can and do engage meaningfully with work, family, and community. They’ve discovered through hard experience that prospering in the senior ranks is a matter of carefully combining work and home so as not to lose themselves, their loved ones, or their foothold on success. Those who do this, vigilantly manage their own human capital, endeavoring to give both work and home their due over a period of years, not weeks or days.

Lets Spread Positivity. Smile More!

For Those who find it difficult it is

less management and more of overlapping both the things. Its all about how you focus on one aspect and yet keeping in mind the other. For instance after a long day at College/Office it is always better to have a 20 min Coffee with a friend or colleague instead of staying alone this not only is gives you the time to socialize but also gives you the

refreshing time you need to get out of

the mundane. Taking a

small example such as above you can take these short breaks in between your busy schedule and keep your social life balanced with proper decision on whether to react or to decline whichever proves to be of greater advantage.
