Vision Statement

To create the most positive, training and competition environment for Zeeland Lacrosse players.

Mission Statement

To prepare and develop student-athletes for competition as they establish interpersonal team skills, lacrosse specific competencies and leadership capacities that will serve them as life long learners.

Philosophy Statement

Everyone must take ownership of this program: athletes, parents, and coaches. It is through this sense of urgency or demand for work that authentic success can take place in the form of continual improvement. Our mentality is not to win at all costs, but to develop athletes and confident young men that identify with well played lacrosse and Zeeland Public Schools. We are about doing the little things, so the larger things take care of themselves. We see the importance of the individual within the larger concept of “TEAM”. We acknowledge that mistakes are part of risking and that is when growth takes place. Everyone has a role and the capacity to be part of this process.

The strength of the pack is the wolf, the strength of the wolf is the pack. The Law of the Jungle.

Most athletes given the choice between success and failure will choose success.

Every athlete has the capacity to improve his or her balance, agility, speed, and endurance.

The game is the teacher.

Play good, clean, aggressive Zeeland Lacrosse.

When you join a team or group you have committed to giving up something of yourself for the good of the larger group or team. By giving up something of yourself you will gain something greater… a sense of identity and Espirit De Corps.

Eating too little compared to your training needs wastes training time and depresses metabolic rate.

When energy and fluid intake are too low, athletes may experience…

1. Poor training benefit Energy intake is too low to meet training demands Carbohydrate intake is too low to recover optimally from training Fluid intake is too low to rehydrate optimally after training Performance shows minimal or no improvement

2. Early fatigue Low levels of muscle glycogen limit capacity for high intensity exercise Dehydration limits exercise capacity and impairs temperature regulation Low iron stores increase risk of anemia and compromise work capacity

3. Reduced muscle strength, muscle endurance, speed and coordination Weight loss reduces muscle mass Muscle is broken down to provide fuel for movement Less able to meet training demands

4. Low blood sugar Less able to concentrate Poor judgment and decision making ability Feelings of hunger, tiredness, light-headedness

5. Increased risk of injury and illness stress fractures respiratory illnesses

6. Extended recovery time after injury or illness

7. May experience feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, anger, irritability

We must move from the simple to the complex to learn and grow. We must step out of our circle of comfort and enter into what has been called “THE GROAN ZONE” or the learning zone. It is through this currency of discomfort that there is a payoff… a dividend… a sense of excitement and ultimately that sense of mastery that can only come about because we risked something.

1. SET GOALS Develop goals systematically- determine your long term goal and how

you plan to get there Adjust goals for practice and competition- take into account the

difference between the two-make competition goals realistic Optimize goal difficulty @ 5-10% above current limit

2. DEVELOP GOAL COMMITMENT Tell someone else what your goal is (accountability) Write it down commit to it daily

3. EVALUATE BARRIERS TO GOAL ATTAINMENT Financial issues Lack of support from others: coaches, parents, teammates etc… Check and modify the goal as necessary

4. CONSTRUCT ACTION PLANS Plan to deal with obstacles, slumps, team issues Think “How will I approach this long term goal”

5. OBTAIN FEEDBACK Combination between setting goals and receiving feedback helps aid in

sticking to, accomplishing, and making realistic goals.

6. EVALUATE GOAL ATTAINMENT Critical Step Did you reach your goal? If not, what prevented you? Serious reflection is needed What can be done to improve? What held you back?

7. REINFORCE GOAL ATTAINMENT Reward your efforts

Dan Millman on Competition

A young athlete (in this case, a martial artist) asked me how to address his anxieties before a competition, due to his desire to win and fear of losing. I wrote a number of reminders that many athletes (and parents) might also find useful, so I share it here. It also applies to dancers, musicians, or any other performers.I’d suggest the following (quite realistic) reminders for competition:

Performance reflects preparation. If you’ve prepared well you should perform well.

Some days are better than others; that’s just how it is. No one is at their absolute peak every time.

We can control our efforts, but not the outcomes. By making the effort, you increase the odds of desired outcomes over not making the effort. You make zero percent of the shots you don’t take.

Don’t aim for winning (which you can’t control). Don’t aim for success (which you can’t control). Aim for excellence; do the best you can in a given situation.

Faith is the courage to live as if everything that happens is for your highest good and learning. So live with faith.

Your “opponent” is your student and your teacher. You cannot learn without someone testing you.

You do not have to “clear your mind”, but do focus your attention on the moment. (This practice helps in sport and in every moment in life.

Regarding how to face your fears: Keep in mind that fear is a wonderful servant, but a terrible master. The only difference between fear and excitement is whether you are breathing. Boxing coach Gus D’mato said, “Heroes and cowards feel exactly the same fear; they just respond differently.” So focus not on the natural fear, but on how you will respond. This is the highest meaning of response-ability.

When approaching a competitive event; accept your thoughts and feelings (“positive” and “negative”) as natural to you in the moment. Focus on your goal. Act in alignment with your goal.

Notice the reminders I’ve offered apply not only to sport, but to every moment in daily life. Competing for medals and trophies is like working for a paycheck; either way, we’ve lost sight of the larger truth that life is not about winning and losing, but about learning-about the journey, not only the destination. No matter what happens in competition, if you learn something that is a real victory.

Todays Athlete and Out of Season Conditioning

For today’s athlete to be successful you must consider out of season conditioning and training opportunities. In reality most athletes must work year around to get ready and be competitive next season. We have many local resources along with the will and desire to make the most of the “off season”.

The Sense of a Goose

In the fall when you see geese heading south for the winter flying along in “V” formation you might be interested in knowing what science has discovered about why they fly that way. It has been learned that as each bird flaps its wings, it creates uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in a “V” formation, the whole flock adds at least 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own.

People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier, because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.

Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone, and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front.

If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those who are headed the same way we are going.

When the lead goose gets tired, he rotates back in the wing and another goose flies point.

It pays to take turns doing hard jobs – with people or with geese flying south. The geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

What messages do we give when we honk from behind?

Finally, when a goose gets sick, or is wounded by gun shot and falls out, two geese fall out of formation and follow him down to help protect him. They stay will him until he is either able to fly or until he is dead, and then they launch out on their own or with another formation to catch up with their group.

I Believe You Have Been Successful If…

You played solid defense. You shut your man down and recognize they are all our men. You battled for and won ground balls for your team. You supported your mates. Minimal penalties. You laughed a little more… You got to know yourself a little better… You can demonstrate and know what it means to give 100%

and then go one step further… You know what it means to stay together… You take responsibility for your mistakes… You support verbally and through your actions, your mates

and coaches… You have self respect and the respect of others in good times

and tough times… You have improved technically, tactically, and you are a well

conditioned athlete… You understand this game of ours mirrors life…
