Bernard and Thomas
What Is An Acid?
• Acids are a group of chemical compounds.
• Some acids are dangerous and can burn your skin or corrode metal.
• Some acids are harmless and are safe to taste.
Examples of Acids
• Battery acid
• Vinegar
• Citric acid (lemons, grapefruit, oranges)
• Lactic acid (sour milk, yogurt, cottage cheese)
What Can Acids Do?
• Acids can corrode metal.
• Acids can turn blue litmus to red.
• Acids can change the color of some vegetable dyes.
What Is A Base?
• A base is slippery or soapy in texture.
• Some bases are dangerous and can burn your skin.
• Some bases are harmless.
• Some bases, called Alkalis, can be dissolved in water.
Examples of Bases
• Chalk
• Baking Soda
• Milk
What Is An Indicator?
• Indicators are substances that change color depending on whether they are in an acidic or basic solution.
• Indicators are often made from plants.
What Do Indicators Do?
• Indicators change colors depending on how acidic or basic a solution is.
• Very acidic = red• Neutral = yellow• Very basic = blue
pH Paper
• pH paper, or litmus paper, is a strip of paper that you dip into science samples.
• It will show you if the sample is an acid, neutral, or a base.
pH Scale
• Scientists use a pH scale to see if the chemical is an acid or a base.
• The pH has 14 colors. 1-6 are acids, 7 is a neutral, 8-14 are bases.
What Is A Chemical Reaction?
• A chemical reaction occurs when atoms interact, exchange or share electrons, forming new chemicals.
Example Of A Chemical Reaction
• A chemical reaction occurs when you mix vinegar and baking soda. When you add those two together you make carbon dioxide gas.
• As you can see in this picture the reaction makes carbon dioxide which goes into the balloon and blows it up.
Chemical Quiz
• Test your knowledge on Chemical Reactions.
• Click on chemical reactions to take quiz.
