What is Acid Rain?

It is rain whose Ph has decreased and therefore

been turned acidic after having mixed with

sulphur or nitrogen dioxide in the atmosphere.

The Formation of Acid Rain

Burn fossil fuels in

Transport, Industry,Homes, power stations

The rest reacts with sunlight and

ozone in the atmosphere; nitric acid(HNO3), and sulphuric acid (H2SO4)are produced

Gas, Oil, Coal

Some falls back to

Earth close to the dryparticles, gas andaerosols.NO2 SO2

It is dissolved in themoisture and resultsinto acid rain

How is nitrogen andsulphuric dioxide formed? Burning Fossil Fuels (coal oil or

gas)

Sulphur dioxide dissolvesin rain, making it more

acidic.

It lowers its pH to 5.8

When sulphur is burned

it reacts with oxygen in

the atmosphere and it

produces Sulphur

dioxide.

Effects On Forests

Acid rain can have terrible effects on a forest. The acidtakes away important minerals from the leaves and the soil.

Minerals are like vitamins for trees and plants. Withoutthem, trees and plants cannot grow properly. They lose theirleaves and become very weak. They are no longer strongenough to fight against illnesses and frost. They become

very ill and can even die.

Effect on Fish

During the winter dangerouslyacidic pollutants have built up inthe snow and when the snowmelts in spring all the acid drainsinto the water system killing manyfish.

Even those who survive sufferfrom Acid Stress

Other affect on the fish arereduced egg composition,decreased growth.

These mass fish disappearancesaffects the birds and eventuallyour whole ecosystem.

which are chemical filters that remove

The government can take action.

Cars can be fitted with special converters

which remove dangerous chemicals

Why do some factory ownersrefuse to try new environmentallysafe methods?

1.It is an additional pay they have to make

2. Their profits may go down.

3. They are not aware of the dangers of acid rain.
