2014 is rapidly approaching and in the New Year, ACI’s passionate and dedicated Global Training Team is looking

forward to offering the world’s airports its stellar lineup of popular and new offerings.

Looking back on 2013, nothing brought us greater pleasure than the positive feedback we received from course

attendees. They told us about the value of our courses and programmes for their personal and professional

development as well as for their airports. Our team also heard many personal stories of lifelong professional

relationships being forged with peer and faculty as well as the increased capacity of using the knowledge acquired

to adapt to an ever evolving airport industry.

We look forward to 2014 and are fully prepared to embrace the challenge of continuing to innovate in the delivery

of quality driven and competency based content that ACI Members and our World Business Partners have come

to expect.

This year, we welcomed Natalie Tsang to the ACI GT Steering Group (GTSG). Natalie compliments the member

focused expertise already provided by Danielle, Nancy, Sonia, Tebello and Yulia.

2013 enabled ACI Global Training to flourish in the service offered to our Members. To keep this year-end review

from spilling over into next year, I will recap only a fraction of our highlights and achievements.

Acknowledgements

The excellence of our faculty continues to draw accolades and recognition across the full range of airport

disciplines. I extend my deep thanks to each instructor for their tremendous teaching skills and passion for their

subject matter. I would also like to thank our member Training Centres and their staff who opened their doors to

host ACI courses.

Of course I cannot forget the contributions of my team: Eddie, Issa, Jeremias, John, Melisa and Mona who

professionally managed the delivery of the 124 courses, 14,777 online hours, along with the implementation of a

new Association Management System which will provide more efficient service to ACI Members.

Lastly, on a more personal note, 2013 saw two beautiful personal achievements take place in the team, Melisa

gave birth to her second child, a beautiful little boy and Mona was married in a very touching wedding ceremony.

On behalf of my team, I wish you all season's greetings and best wishes for the new year!

2013 was a Banner Year for the Global Safety Network Diploma Programme

In 2013, ACI saw tremendous growth in the number of graduates from our Global Safety Network (GSN) Diploma

Programme. This was a clear vote of confidence that ACI Members continue to see the importance and increasing

relevance of our six GSN course offerings in the areas of Safety Management Systems, Airside Operations, Annex

14, Emergency Planning and Aerodrome Auditing.

In the year, 50 GSN Initial graduates received their Silver Diplomas, which brought the total number of GSN Initial

graduates to 132 and 13 GSN Advanced graduates were awarded Gold Diplomas. This brought the total number

of GSN Advanced graduates to 16.

Congratulations to all of our 2013 GSN graduates. ACI is very proud of your achievements!

Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA) Closes a Great First Year for the ACI-

DNA Programme

By Mona Lisa Nazareno, DNA Programme Registrar

The ACI Developing Nations Airport Assistance Programme (ACI-DNA) closed a memorable first year at Beijing

Capital International Airport (BCIA). Organized with the assistance of Capital Airports Management Company

(CAMA) and the ACI Asia-Pacific Regional office, BCIA welcomed 23 participants from 18 airports, operators and

airport management groups from the region and several different countries.

This session was the third DNA Seminar hosted in the Asia-Pacific Region and was facilitated by seasoned ACI

Instructor Peter Hampson. The participants eagerly tackled the always pertinent subject of ―Understanding ICAO

Annex 14‖, covering essentials such as Airport Signs/Aircraft Navigation Aids, Airfield Pavement Markings, as well

as Safety Management Systems (SMS) and principles of SMS. As many can attest, the case studies as well as the

airport tour of BCIA served well to assist the students with putting theory into practice, enabling them to view the

runways, taxiways, firefighting stations and airport operations control center.

ACI would like to thank Ms. Zhang Pei, CAMA Supervisor as well as their dedicated team and the BCIA team who

provided first rate support and facilities to all participants and also helped the Programme end its first year on a

high note. In 2013, ACI-DNA hosted over 200 participants worldwide and eight seminars. Our developing nations’

airport members can rest assured that we will continue to develop and host future training in the same vein—

offering the expertise of our knowledgeable and seasoned faculty who teach subjects of essential importance to

the airports industry.

6th DNA Seminar: Aerodrome Certification Workshop for Airports in Africa

By Paul Aliu, Programme Officer/APEX Liaison, ACI World

ACI has once again demonstrated its proficiency in reading and understanding regional needs by delivering a

much needed seminar on Aerodrome Certification held 20-22 November 2013 in Dakar, Senegal funded by the

ACI Developing Nations Assistance (DNA) Airports Progamme.

The Seminar followed the successful completion of the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC)/ACI Airport

Excellence (APEX) in Safety Symposium (18 –19 November, 2013) which was hosted by AFCAC and the ICAO

Regional office in Dakar, Senegal.

The Aerodrome Certification Seminar was organized with the aim of providing guidance to assist ACI Members in

complying with the Agreements reached at ―The Ministerial Conference on Aviation Safety in Africa, Abuja, 2012 ‖

in certifying all African airports by 2015. It was attended by 55 aviation professionals from the CEO level down to

department managers responsible for the day-to-day operations at their aerodromes. This number encompassed

Page 10: ACI | Global Training Newsletter · 2018-08-16 · 117 International Airport Professionals ... Airports Company South Africa About ACI-DNA With acceleration in the growth of aviation

27 different states in the African Region.

The seminar was taught by by Mr. Mohamed Ben Salah, Head of Service in Airports Certification field at the

Tunisian Civil Aviation and Airports Office as well as by Mr. Arthemon Ndikumana, Regional Officer in Aerodromes

in Ground Aids (AGA), ICAO Regional Office, Dakar. The instructors share over 40 years of combined experience

in the field of airport operations and academic instruction.

We would like to thank all participants, instructors and our hosts for their hard work and dedication in working

towards the continual growth and improvement of the aviation sector in the African Region.

Testimonial “ This course highlighted that one needs to be continuously vigilant about the risks in managing an aerodrome even if you have the Certification. It has improved my awareness of best practice and have learnt many lessons that I can apply at my workplace to improve our level of Safety. A must even for experienced airport managers.” Rishi Thakurdin Group Manager : Safety and Compliance Corporate Office Airports Company South Africa

About ACI-DNA

With acceleration in the growth of aviation worldwide, the need to increase airport excellence in the fields of

management, economics, safety, security and operations in developing countries is also growing. In order for ACI

to play an even stronger role and to increase the capacity already provided by semi-annual ACI Fund seminars, in

2012 the ACI World Governing Board approved the creation of the ACI Developing Nations Airport Assistance

Programme (ACI-DNA).

ACI-DNA Programme committee members are working on next year’s seminar schedule. To consult the most up-

to-date list of upcoming sessions, please click here.
