Industrialagriculturesystemsareoftenreferredtoas‘conventional’agriculture,butamoreappropriatetermwouldbe‘compensation’agriculture,aswefindtheuseofchemicals,syntheticfertilizers,andgeneticengineeringbeingusedto‘compensate’forproblemsthatwe—ashumans—arecreating.Profit-drivenproponentsofgeneticengineeringliketomaketheclaimthattheirproductsaredesignedtouselesschemicals,wheninfact,justtheoppositeistrue.In2013,ForbesMagazinerananarticleentitled,‘GMOCropsMeanMoreHerbicide,NotLess’,inwhichtheywrote:“Food&WaterWatchfoundthatthe"totalvolumeofglyphosateappliedtothethreebiggestGEcrops—corn,cottonandsoybeans—increased10-foldfrom15millionpoundsin1996to159millionpoundsin2012."OverallpesticideusedecreasedonlyinthefirstfewyearsGEcropswereused(42percentbetween1998and2001)andhassincethenrisenby26percentfrom2001to2010.By2011therewerealsothreetimesasmanyherbicide-resistantweedsfoundinfarmer'sfieldsastherewerein2001.Thishasmeanthugeprofitsforagribusinessesdevelopingandsellinggeneticallyengineeredseeds,herbicidesandpesticides.Seedrevenueshaveseptupled(increasedsevenfold)since1998.”20
