Sporting Achievements September 2016 – July 2017 NURSERY

Autumn 2016: Tinies Triathlon for charity.

Summer 2017: Sports Morning in the Rose Garden.

PRE PREP• Boys in Year 2 have represented Parkside in football matches and tournaments this year. The boys played with determination and skill during every match and showed excellent sportsmanship whether they won or lost.

Spring 2017: Football• The U7 tournament at Hawthorns School was a great success for the Parkside team! The boys played brilliantly as a team winning a thrilling final against Downsend 2:0! Well done boys!

• The U7 boys also took part in the Parkside U7 tournament and were runners up in the plate final.

Summer 2017: Swimming• The Swimming Gala against Danes Hill saw boys in Years 1 and 2 compete in individual races and relays. Parkside narrowly lost but all the boys showed what strong swimmers they are and how confident they feel in the water.

Summer 2017: Tennis• Our boys played some great tennis against St Teresa’s School.

PREP

Autumn 2016: Football• Parkside U11 footballers won the Bradfield tournament, beating The Oratory 1-0 in the final! They only conceded 1 goal all afternoon.

Golf • Luke, George and Ollie played very well at Burhill Golf Club and came away with the Reed’s Golf Trophy! Well done boys, and in particular to Ollie who shot the round of the day!

Spring 2017: Cross Country• Parkside retained the Rokeby Shield with an outstanding team performance. In freezing

3

conditions the boys produced some brilliant running to win the event.

• Congratulations to all the team: Adam Rustom, James Hoad, George Wood, William Prime, Edward Dorsett, Tommy Ballard, Adam Dring, Marcus Nielsen, Theo Saltissi, George Watler, Edward Gentle, Andile Thabethe, Lawrence Way, Oscar Groombridge.

Hockey• Another super season for the U11A team with two victories in the St Andrew’s Tournament and the Royal Russell Tournament. The Parkside team, captained by Oliver Balls on the day, won every game and duly regained the trophy last won by the current Year 8’s.

• The U11 hockey boys continued their remarkable season finishing as runners up in the South of England. They added a pennant to their five trophies and their 5th place finish in the Nationals was remarkable. Well done.

• The U11’s went to Cranleigh School for the Surrey Hockey Championships 2017, entering two teams into what was a strong field. Both teams did really well with the ‘B’ team being unfortunate to not go through to the semi-finals but the ‘A’ were crowned U11 Surrey Champions.

• The U11A hockey boys continued their trophy laden season with victory at the IAPS Regional Qualifiers at Tonbridge School in February.

• Parkside’s U11 Hockey side secured 5th place at the IAPS Nationals to continue the form shown by last year’s record breaking team.

Overall an amazing hockey season from our U11 teams!

Summer 2017: Athletics• At the recent ‘Eight Schools Athletics Meeting’ held at the Spectrum, Adam Dring created 2 new U12 Parkside records in the sprints! He broke the 100m record with a time of 13.42 seconds beating the previous record of 13.47 which has stood since 1958! In addition, he also broke the 200m school record with a time of 28.60! Well done Adam – incredible achievements!

• At the same event Friso Boomsma won the high jump, 50m and set a new record for the 75m sprint winning this category. Superb!

• Luke Wessels the youngest athlete from Parkside also performed well coming 3rd in the 150m race and helped his team to 2nd place in the relay.

• The U12 boys 4x100m relay team ran brilliantly at the West Surrey Area Athletics meeting at Bracknell to claim county gold and progress to the National finals. Sean Cotton and Adam Dring, both members of the winning relay team performed brilliantly in their individual disciplines too, winning the long jump and 100m competitions respectively too. The boys will now compete in the National Prep Schools Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

Swimming• Maarten Louwe represented Parkside School at the IAPS National Swimming Championships this weekend. With over 4000 entries into the largest sporting event in the IAPS calendar Maarten proudly qualified in the top 16 boys for the finals which were held at Crawley K2. After a fiercely contested race, Maarten was rewarded with a Bronze Medal in the 25m Butterfly, presented by Olympic and World Champion Silver Medalist Michael Jamieson.

• Parkside held its first ‘Festival of Swimming’ and invited 3 local primary state schools to participate. It was all about ‘opportunity and a chance’ for over 120 swimmers, many of whom were competing for the first time and experience what swimming at Parkside has to offer.

Triathlon• The recent Triathlon at Parkside School was a fabulous event attended by many boys with much enthusiasm. Well done to all boys who participated.

Cricket• There has been more prolific run-making by the U11A team. Charlie Balls made 85 not out in a total of 180 against Hawthorns, while Sebastian Dunn made 50 ‘not out’ in a convincing performance at Cranleigh.

• Congratulations to our U11 Surrey Cricket 8-a-side champions – a great achievement in unbelievably hot weather! Well done to all boys! The boys will now go on to contest the South of England final at Horsham Cricket Club.

Our boys followed up their success in the 8-a-side competition by beating Shrewsbury House in the Surrey Prep School Cup Semi Final. They will now contest the final against Kings House School.

Tennis• The U11 team beat Rokeby School 6-3 recently during extreme weather conditions of strong winds and rain. The boys (Andrey Ignatyev, Charlie Balls, Marcus Nielsen, Jared Hall, Jack Tenenbaum, Oliver Balls) played very well in their singles and doubles games. Well done boys!

Nursery News

What a fantastic year we have had in Nursery. The ongoing feedback from parents is consistently positive and the children thrive in this wonderful setting. One of the striking features of the Nursery, highlighted by our parents, is our clear and comprehensive communication about all we do. This facilitates the very thing we strive for, namely, a strong partnership between home and Nursery enabling us to provide a secure foundation for maximising a child’s learning on every level.

Every week parents share information and photos from home and we, in turn, share a breadth of information about all the lovely things the children are doing here. You can imagine how this ongoing dialogue between home and Nursery enriches learning and inspires the children to become confident, imaginative and talkative learners. Research shows that, when young children are provided with a narrative, not only will it enhance their memory skills, they will also go on to develop their own narrative enabling them to make sense of their learning, make links across the curriculum, and become independent thinkers – rather important in today’s world!

Our new Babies and Toddlers’ club, aka the B & T Club, opened in September 2016 and places were immediately full as parents discovered what a great facility we are offering. The benefits are manifold; a lovely cosy place to be with your young children before they start Nursery, multi-talented staff who come to sing in different languages, do a wide range of activities with the little ones and generally support their learning and best of all give the mums a 10 minute coffee break whilst they look after their children!

Our links with the community remain strong and Parkside Nursery pupils are well recognised as polite and courteous on their outings and visits as well as generous and thoughtful in their contributions to various charities. This year, in Nursery, we introduced a new initiative to promote ‘good values’ in everything we do and we celebrate this in our assemblies. This initiative links with British values; we respect and embrace diversity and we know that celebrating universal values make the world a happier place.
