Future Thinking This programme is designed to develop a range of thinking strategies and skills in our students,
which will not only assist them with their study here at SGHS, but also with their future study and
careers. Examples of lessons include goal setting, research, time management, different types
of thinking, study skills, and strategies for generating and organising ideas.
Gifted and Talented Programmes Gifted and Talented students are identified by whanau/parents, class teachers and through self-
selection. Students can then choose to extend themselves by studying at a higher level or
undertaking a specialist area. Minds Alive is also available as a course that Year 8 students can
be selected for, and Year 9 and 10 students can opt into.
The programme uses the University of Cambridge International Examination Syllabus in Global
Perspectives. Students are given the opportunity to enquire into and reflect on the accelerating
changes in the world that impact on us. The emphasis is on extending the skills and thinking
that active citizens and leaders of the future will need. Year 7 students, like Year 8 students, are
extended through their Inquiry based Learning Packages. Students are encouraged to take
ideas further into individual actions. We offer opportunities to join a number of workshops during
the year, competitions, spelling, writing, mathematics and computing examinations also in
International forums.
Qualifications – NCEA NCEA is offered to all students. The Level 1, 2 and 3 certificates are usually studied for all years
11, 12 and 13. However, some of our students choose to accelerate and sit NCEA earlier.
Cambridge
Cambridge IGCSE is offered to the extension band of English, Mathematics and Science at year
10. It is seen as preparation for Level 1 NCEA, giving the grounding in thinking and content to
allow students to reach their personal excellence. Challenging your learning and extending your
potential can be a part of your Year 10 year. Students in the extension Year 10 English, Science
and Maths classes study the Cambridge International Examination Syllabus for 14-16 year olds
all over the world.
Literacy A whole school planned initiative for every student to use reading, research and writing material
more effectively in order to achieve their best.
Numeracy The development of number and thinking strategies to improve mathematical learning through

_____________________________________________________________________________________ A quality learning community where relationships count and excellence is expected.
ERO’s Voice Education Review Office – Southland Girls’ High School focuses on creating a learning community
building on good quality relationships and a culture where personal excellence for each student is
promoted.
“Students receive a high quality of education. ERO observed students highly engaged in the learning that was skilfully facilitated by teachers”.
“Effective relationships underpin the pursuit of excellence in this learning community”.
“Students continue to experience a curriculum that provides significant choice and many opportunities to direct their own learning. Teachers continue to refine the way learning is packaged so that students are exposed to the richness of the curriculum through a variety of innovative approaches”.
“Teachers provide students with a range of learning, thinking and goal setting strategies that are well used at all levels. They plan many ways to tailor the learning to meet the needs, interests and abilities of the students in each class. Students often have opportunities to make choices and contribute to decisions about their learning”.
“Students achieve well above their peers in similar schools nationally at all levels of the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA). Although it is a decile 5 school, it aims to match its achievement levels to those of decile 8 girls’ schools. Over the last four years, students have consistently met these high expectations in certificates gained at Levels 1, 2 and 3, in literacy and numeracy at Level 1, and in gaining University Entrance”.
Since the 2006 ERO review the school has maintained its focus on high quality performance
and ongoing improvement. Trustees, staff and students work effectively in their quest for
excellence in all areas.
NZQA’s Voice
“In the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA), students achieve on average
significantly better than students at similar schools and at comparable levels to higher decile schools. A
higher proportion of students who enter the school at Year 9 go on to complete Levels 1 and 2
Certificates in their senior years compared with similar schools. Teachers focus on increasing the
proportion of students gaining merit and excellence rather than the number of credits they attain”.
Southland Girls’ High School results are higher in all cases than the National average and better than
other Decile 5 schools.
At Southland Girls’ High School there are ‘seamless pathways’. Students are expected and
encouraged to extend themselves and achieve at high levels.
We operate a semester system like a University which allows students to work at different levels and
change their subjects at the end of each semester.

Parent Voice – Why their daughters attend SGHS
“Friendly, welcoming school, strong leadership and excellent staff. The school has a ‘great feel’ to it
with impressive academic results”.
“Excellence is expected at SGHS, and is achievable”.
“My daughter liked the idea that it was where her aunties, mother, grandmother and sister had attended,
and I like that it’s a girls school where the teachers solely concentrate on providing what works best for
our girls learning”.
“…Because I came here and absolutely loved it – they were the best years of my life”.
“We were impressed with the mix of traditional values and the modern approach to educating young
women. My daughter felt a strong sense of belonging right from the Open Day and the subject choice of
Dance and Performance was appealing to her”.
“Our family thought the key points for choosing SGHS were the schools marketing and promotion, (we
were really impressed with the Open Day, private tour and Parent Information night), reputation,
relationship values and leadership”.
“We went to the SGHS Open Day in 2011. Our first stop was the ‘languages’ room and from there out
into the hallway my daughter said “Mum, this is where I’m going – I love the school already, it’s
definitely for me!!” She started year 7 at SGHS this year, she has gone from strength to strength and
loves the school, her teachers, new friends, a whole range of new subjects, brilliant facilities, and what
feels like a very bright future for her high school years”.
Student Voice – from the 2012 Year 7’s
“I just thought it was the best school for my learning and the school had everything I wanted for my
future”.
“What made me come to SGHS…because it can help me learn”
“I thought that Open Night was the best ever and as soon as I came here I thought that this is the school I
want to go to, to learn each day”.
“I didn’t want all the fuss with boys coming between friends. And I thought there was very good
opportunities for my future at this school. Now I am here, the learning is great and I’ve improved a lot
in my personal excellence”.
“My friends and family said that this school was a good school for learning”.
“My sister is here and she really enjoys it so it must be a great school”.
“The teachers and students are great and respect each other”.
“The reason I came to SGHS is because of the learning reputation and the uniform”.
“I thought SGHS would be better at education, and it would be great to have all girls around me”.
“My Mum and Dad wanted me pushed with my learning and thought I would have more opportunities
here.
