ACEA Way to Answer Questions
What is ACE?
• Strategy for answering questions
• Each letter stands for a part of the answer– A = answer the question with the question re-worded in
sentence– C = cite textual evidence (Give page(s) #’s and “Quote”
information from the story)– E = expand/explain (Answer the question “so what?” and
“what does this mean?”)
The Question and Answer
• What does the ugly duckling become at the end of the story?
• Answer:– a swan

• Cite (Give page(s) #’s and “Quote” information from the story)
• On page 27, it states, “Instead he beheld beneath him a beautiful swan.” Also on page 27, the children say that the swan was the best swan of all because he had bright feathers and a bright beak. Plus, the duckling has a yellow glow around him in the picture which makes him look better than the other swans.

• Explain/Expand (Answer the question “so what?” and “what does this mean?”)
• This lets the readers know that the duckling was no longer ugly because he had turned into a beautiful swan.
Putting it All Together
