The nation’s favorite major summer holiday is just around the corner – that’s right, it’s almost Independence Day! Americans celebrate the Fourth of July with parades, concerts, picnics, bonfires and fireworks. Americans continue the tradition in celebrating their freedom by taking part in some fun and entertaining events in commemoration. I hope you have a great 4 th of July holiday and rest of the summer. ============================================================================== ??? The Question Corner??? The Question Corner provides answers to frequently asked questions by volunteers and members of the community during this past month. You have changed your name. What does A.C.E. stand for? A.C.E. of SW Minnesota stands for Advocate, Connect and Educate. Why did you change your name? You may recall that over the past 11 ½ years our organization has had many different names including Redwood County Volunteers, RSVP & Faith in Action. Our organizational name has changed due to the fact that we provide more than volunteer services. Along with matching volunteers with the needs of the community we also provide services to help older adults to remain living safely and independently in their own homes. We continue to offer Evidenced Based Programs such as Powerful Tools for Caregivers, Matter of Balance, and Chronic Disease Self Management. I recently volunteered at a community event such as our town celebration (i.e. Redwood 150 th Anniversary Event, Morgan, Wabasso, Lucan, Seaforth, etc. celebration) Friends of the Park, Relay for Life , Ruby’s Pantry. Should I report these hours to you? Yes, we have a special timesheet where we can record these hours and other miscellaneous hours. Please send them to our office and we will record them for you. Hours can be reported by calling our office at 507-627-1016, e-mailing us at [email protected] or mailing them to us at A.C.E. of SW MN – Redwood County, 1011 E. Elm St., #221, Redwood Falls, MN 56283. Why is it important to report our hours? The hours you report tell a story which goes into reports to our national and state offices, legislators, our Joint Powers Board, local county commissioners, as well as reporting to our grant funders. These numbers show just how much you as volunteers do and the impact on our communities.

Question Corner continues…………..

How are we doing? Are people reporting their hours? In May of 2014, there were 439 volunteers enrolled in Redwood County. 225 of those volunteers reported hours this month or about 51% of the people enrolled reported hours. These 225 volunteers donated 3,546 hours of volunteer service this month. Thank you all for your great work in Redwood County.

I volunteered this year but haven’t reported my hours. Is it too late? Absolutely not. We would love to have you report your hours. Just call, e-mail or mail your 2014 hours to us.

MATTER OF BALANCE CLASS IN WABASSO

Front left to right: Marge Gammelgard, Mary Lensing, Kathy Baune, Monica Fischer, Cyrilla McDonald. Back row: Elvera Hoffmann, Arlyce Averill, Carol Atkins, Kay Hirsch, Cyrilla McDonald, Charlotte Salfer, Lila Hammerschmidt, Joanne Bernardy. Matter of Balance classes began in Wabasso at Heritage Prairie Apartments on June 10 with 12 people participating. Classes are held for 8 weeks and emphasize practical strategies to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels. Participants learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and learn exercises which they can do at home to increase strength and balance.

One in three persons living in their own home over the age of 65 falls each year, and this number increases to one in two by the age of 80. Fall-related injuries are often serious enough to result in hospitalization and even premature death; moreover, persons who fall often face significant declines in mobility and independence. If you or someone you know would be interested in attending the Matter of Balance classes, please call our office at 507-627-1016. We would be happy to bring the classes to your community.
