First-Year Experience Reqmt Credit Location Mthd Days Time InstructorFYE-111-01 America on Film FYE 4.0 LEC T TH 2:00 - 3:20 pm E. Julian

Students must take the corresponding companion course of FYE-111C, as evident by matching section numbers. Over the past one hundred years, the American film industry, driven by Hollywood, has emerged as a global force, creating narratives that entertain audiences around the world. More importantly, film plays a powerful role in shaping how we look at the people around us, whether it's subconsciously reinforcing an existing stereotype or outright challenging a dominant norm. This course will examine how contemporary films reflect, construct, and question the dominant image and understanding of America's diverse societies and culture, focusing particularly on race, ethnicity, gender, class, and sexuality. By placing films within their broader historical and cultural contexts, students will learn to analyze and understand films as sociological and ideological productions.

FYE-111C-01 First Yr Experience Companion 0.0 LEC W 3:00 - 3:50 pm E. Julian

Students must take the corresponding core course for FYE-111, as represented by matching section numbers.

FYE-112-01 Travels of a T-Shirt FYE 3.0 LEC M W F 8:00 - 8:50 am K. Josephson

Prerequisite: FYE 111, or permission of the instructor. This course will examine the power and politics of world trade along with the role and impact which the corporate world and civil society play in regards to economic development. The global economy is made up of complex systems, and little shifts can cause dramatic changes; as such, this course will look into real world cases concerning global integration and interdependency. Students will learn about the changing dynamics of trade and the evolution of capitalism, along with the rise in transnational activism concerning development initiatives. A core reading for this course will be The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy by Dr. Pietra Rivoli, along with other articles and case studies which either compliment or criticize this text. In particular, Michael Porter's theory of shared value and CK Prahalad's socio-economic concept of the BOP as a viable market will be debated in this course as students formulate their own views regarding international business.

FYE-112-02 Let the Great World Spin II FYE 3.0 LEC M W F 9:00 - 9:50 am S. Clark

Prerequisite: FYE 111, or permission of the instructor. The great world keeps spinning, regardless of human feats and foibles that consume our attention and rock our personal and community foundations. And yet, it is the narratives of individuals and their communities -- the culture in which they are immersed and the connections they come to share with others -- that often provide us with context from which we gather greater meaning. Through intriguing narratives, we will explore individuals and their cultural connections from the heart of Haiti, to the displaced Hmong people in California, and subcultures in the Bronx. Our reading, research, and writing will touch upon such diverse subjects as faith beliefs, family constructs, poverty, illegal drugs, illness, and the quandaries presented by the inequities of the medical and criminal justice systems. Ultimately, we will explore the value of human connection as we dance along the wire of history.

FYE-112-03 Drugs and Society FYE 3.0 LEC M W F 9:00 - 9:50 am C. Lappas

Prerequisite: FYE 111, or permission of the instructor. This course is designed to explore the culture of drug use and abuse in American society. Students will be introduced to the basic science of how drugs work and will discuss the causes and consequences of prescription and illegal drug use and abuse in America. Utilizing relevant readings, documentaries and class debates, students will consider important societal issues including the opiod crisis, the legalization of marijuana and the influence of "Big Pharma" on America's health and economy.

FYE-112-04 To the Ends of the Earth FYE 3.0 LEC M W F 10:00 - 10:50 am K. Pry

Prerequisite: FYE 111, or permission of the instructor. Why are human beings often so ready to go to the most extreme and dangerous corners of our world? In this course we will explore new territory by engaging students in readings and writings about early and present-day western attempts to penetrate the forbidden land of Tibet, and conquer Mt. Everest-the highest point on our planet. We will travel the legendary "Silk Road" of Central Asia with the real-life archaeologists who inspired the Indiana Jones movies, in search of ancient lost cities, artwork, and manuscripts. Along the way, we'll study the collisions of different cultures and religions, the morality of removing art from one culture to another, and the power of climate change, warfare, and human migration to affect radical change on civilizations.

FYE-112-05 Let the Great World Spin II FYE 3.0 LEC M W F 10:00 - 10:50 am S. Clark

Prerequisite: FYE 111, or permission of the instructor. The term American Dream, coined in 1931, suggests an ability for us to reach complete success and happiness in our personal and professional lives. Much has changed in American society and culture since 1931 leading us to question if the American Dream is still possible. Through a selection of readings and media, this course will explore what we commonly now see as success and happiness in today's society. In the second semester of this course, we will specifically challenge the meaning of socioeconomic class, gender, immigration, and race and consider the implications of those identities to an individual's ability to achieve the American Dream. An extended research paper and a semester-long group project are required components of this course.

In this course, we'll consider different conceptions of the hero, across varying cultural and historical contexts. We'll dip into everything from classical epics to comic books to consider what defines heroes, legends, and even anti-heroes. Who are the heroes of our contemporary age? How are they created and how are they used?

FYE-112-09 What Is Creativity? FYE 3.0 LEC M W F 1:00 - 1:50 pm J. Kline

Prerequisite: FYE 111, or permission of the instructor. What exactly is creativity and can studying it help us to be more creative? Although channeling creativity often seems elusive, it lies at the heart of creating new and unique things. Influential figures such as musicians, authors, entrepreneurs, artists, filmmakers, inventors, and even YouTube stars, use creativity to turn an idea into something tangible. As a student, creativity is an important asset to apply to almost any pursuit or career. This course will explore creativity from a both a critical and an experiential perspective in an attempt to answer "...what is creativity and how can I channel mine?"

FYE-112-12 Art & the Body II FYE 3.0 LEC M W F 2:00 - 2:50 pm G. Taylor

Prerequisite: FYE 111, or permission of the instructor. Our human body defines our species. Our complex living system is the seat of consciousness and the machine that replicates and transmits our code for continued life. As the physical extension and stored repository of our worldly experiences, our body is crucial to self-identity. It is no surprise, then, that the depiction of the body is central to art. Our desires, our self-doubts, and our prejudices are all found in the way we represent ourselves. Through various modes of critical thinking, research, and writing, we will uncover, complicate, and question the history of human embodiment in the visual arts.

FYE-112-13 Race in the 21st Century FYE 3.0 LEC M W 2:00 - 3:20 pm C. Romagnolo

Prerequisite: FYE 111, or permission of the instructor. In this seminar we will investigate "race" as a social, cultural, and political phenomenon in the contemporary United States. By examining a variety of materials, including television, film, novels, and essays (e.g., Dear White People, Black Panther, Underground Railroad, Robin DiAngelo's White Fragility) we will analyze how the concept of race is perceived, experienced, challenged, and constructed in this historical moment. Second semester will focus on popular culture. Themes and topics to be covered in FYE 112 include race and popular culture, literature, and film.

FYE-112-15 Selves and Masks FYE 3.0 LEC T TH 8:00 - 9:20 am G. Grieve-Carlson

Prerequisite: FYE 111, or permission of the instructor. In the modern world, the notion that each of us has, or is, an "authentic self," i.e., some kind of fundamental character or true identity, can seem quaint and old-fashioned. The Danish neurobiologist Lone Frank tells us that "the concept of this stable inner core is ancient and tenacious, but it is an illusion. It fits poorly with what science has discovered." But not everyone agrees. In this seminar we'll read two novels, a memoir, and a play that explore the idea of a "self," as well as the masks that we wear in order to project other kinds of "selves." Two of these are American classics that you may have read in high school: The Great Gatsby and Death of a Salesman. The memoir, Real American, is much more recent, and the final novel, Things Fall Apart, is set in West Africa amid the turmoil of colonialism.

FYE-112-17 Electing the President FYE 3.0 LEC T TH 8:00 - 9:20 am J. Broussard

Prerequisite: FYE 111, or permission of the instructor. This course takes a look at past presidential elections to help us discover where the 2016 election fits into the historical pattern. In the process, we will study how issues such as religion, class, race, and gender emerged in presidential campaigns, and how various factors influenced the way people voted. We will pay particular attention to several "critical elections" such as 1800, 1828, 1860, 1896, 1932, and 1980 that seem to have ended one political era and pushed the political system in new directions.

FYE-112-18 Twice Told Tales FYE 3.0 LEC T TH 9:30 - 10:50 am S. Bhattacharya

Prerequisite: FYE 111, or permission of the instructor. This course will explore why and how certain stories get told and retold over the centuries and across continents. We will interrogate the cultural and social currency of both the original tale as well as the adaptations by examining the formal and thematic innovations in these twice-told tales. We will concentrate on the frame tale, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and trace the evolution of Frankenstein's monster into the 20th and 21st centuries through hypertext, social media, TV shows, films, graphic novels, etc. We will examine the creation of the "other" through various critical lenses. We will read the hypertext fiction Patchwork Girl and excerpts from Alasdair Gray's Poor Things to interrogate the creation of the female monster. We will also look at how popular culture uses the "myth" of the monster in order to understand how certain narratives are shaped by and in turn influence cultural capital.

FYE-112-19 Selves and Masks FYE 3.0 LEC T TH 9:30 - 10:50 am G. Grieve-Carlson

Prerequisite: FYE 111, or permission of the instructor. This course will explore questions of religious meaning through the various ways contemporary individuals and traditions have sought to reconcile their faith with the modern world. Objectives will include the effort to understand the continuing importance and impact of religion on contemporary culture, politics, and philosophy, to learn about the many facets of religious diversity in the United States and around the world, and to reflect on the crisis of traditional beliefs about God brought about by the development of modern science and technology. Writing assignments will provide opportunities for students to research and reflect on a range of contemporary theological and philosophical understandings of God, religion and meaning.

We will read and discuss current research findings while considering the parenting and public policy implications for such childhood questions. This course will enhance your knowledge of child development while encouraging you to reflect on the family, friends, and experiences that shaped the person you are today. Course readings will center around infancy and childhood issues in the fall while the spring content will focus on adolescence and emerging adulthood topics.

FYE-112-24 Making+Remaking Everday Life FYE 3.0 LEC T TH 12:30 - 1:50 pm R. Machado

Prerequisite: FYE 111, or permission of the instructor. This course investigates film, literature, photography, and other media (including "noise" music) from the last century-and-a-half whose forms, themes, characters, and ideas might be considered extreme, unrecognizable, "bizarre," and even impenetrable. In doing so, one of our primary goals will be to enhance our ability to bring attention to the overlooked, and to rethink / remake the familiar. Together, we will find ways to intervene, to challenge established critical practices and ways of thinking, and to test interdisciplinary approaches to analysis and production that might allow us to innovate within our individual fields of interest, communities, and everyday lives.

Prerequisite: FYE 111, or permission of the instructor. Noise, rage, rebellion - this is the ethos of punk. For nearly half a century, punk rock has endured through music, fashion, art, and politics, never getting old or wearing out and continuously redefining its boundaries. In 1991 - the year that punk broke into the mainstream with Nirvana's Nevermind - the unruly appeal of alternative music was threatened with commodification by the music-culture industry. Punk, though, is not a style but an attitude, a way of understanding the world through resistance and independence. In its fierce determination, Punk 2.0 has infiltrated music and art on a global scale - transcending genres and geography. This seminar examines punk in the age of globalism, tracing the diverse musical and social reach of its cultural and socio-political force.

The course will engage works such as The Girl with All the Gifts, The Road, and Cloud Atlas, films such as Dr. Strange Love, The Road Warrior/Fury Road, The Matrix, Apocalypto, and Snowpiercer and smaller works of poetry, short fiction, and myths.

Pre or co-requisite: The Connective Experience (COE) and, in particular, the integrative component of the COE must be taken prior to or concurrently with this course. As members of an active college community, we hope for the freedom and opportunity to be creative, to take on meaningful work, and to achieve our full potential. Daily stressors, constant media distractions, fear of the future, and other experiences may challenge this freedom and even our ability to pursue our life-goals. This course, using Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now as its primary text, explores ways for creating space in our lives for silence and reflection. In a seminar format, each student will lead the class in discussion of a text chosen from an extensive reading list. Students will use these ideas to frame an interdisciplinary project, and they also will reflect on how their coursework, co-curricular experiences, and immersive experiences have helped to transform them during their time at LVC.

What are the processes underpinning creativity that allows for idea generation? How do individuals access the knowledge of multiple disciplines and make it transformative? In the hopes of understanding and amplify our own creative abilities, this course illuminates the act of exceptional human innovation in art, science, and technology. Employing an interdisciplinary approach, students will practice creative mentality as a way to promote novelty and originality in their own research projects. In addition, students will also reflect on how their coursework, co-curricular experiences, and immersive experiences have helped to transform them during their time at LVC.
