We don’t know whether the diatonic accordion is a German or Austrian
invention. We’re al so not sure how it came to the Americas , and why
it has such an incredible his tory in Colombia. But then, we don’t really
care – because what mat ters i s that i t spawned several exciting musical
s t y le s , ranging f rom Tex- Mex to I r i sh fo lk , f rom French muset te to
Colombian vallenato.
What makes the diatonic accordion so interesting is the big tonal range
i t cover s . I t has a so - cal led “s ingle -ac t ion keyboard ,” meaning that
each but ton produces two tones: one for pushing, one for pull ing. This
means that , even though the range i s big , the ins trument s tays small

This fac t made i t the per fec t folk ins trument . But i t ’s not jus t a folk
favorite. I t ’s al so quite popular for pop, rock , and even punk , as well!

are looking for a power ful and dis t inc t ive

I t may almost sound l ike an empty phrase,
but when we say that the accord ion i s
the hear t and soul of the val lenato music,
we say i t because there’s no bet ter way

Espec ia l l y for Tex-Mex and nor teño, th is

the r ight accordion. The sound is jus t as
