According to the United States Environmental ProtectionAgency, domestic greenhouse gas emissions increased3.2 percent between 2009 and 2010. This was primarily dueto an increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associatedwith fuel and electricity consumption.

In 2008, the United Nations traced approximately 18 percent of total global greenhouse emissions to activities in theUnited States, a nation with less than five percent of world population. Subsequent annual emission increases meansAmerica remains one of the world’s worst greenhousegas offenders, second only to China.
