Interested in joining us ... ? If the thought of singing magnificent choral music as part of a large choir appeals to you,
do have a word with Jessica or any member of the choir about joining us. We rehearse on
Thursday evenings in St. Nicholas Buccleuch church hall. There is no audition, but Jessica
will happily listen to you and suggest which part would suit you best if you are not sure.

Every hour, someone in the UK is told they
have Parkinson's. Because we're here, no
one has to face Parkinson's alone. We bring
people with Parkinson's, their carers and families together via our network of local
groups, our website and free confidential helpline. Specialist nurses, our supporters
and staff provide information and training on every aspect of Parkinson's. As the UK's
Parkinson's support and research charity we're leading the work to find a cure, and
we're closer than ever. We also campaign to change attitudes and demand better
services. Our work is totally dependent on donations. Tonight you can help us to
find a cure and improve life for everyone affected by Parkinson's.
Welcome ! On behalf of The Dalkeith Singers I welcome you to our Spring Concert, 2017. the first under our new Musical Director, Jessica Leary. We are also delighted to have two musicians joining us, Bob Miller on Bass Guitar and Neil Wilson on Drums, who will be accompanying some of the pieces. We hope you enjoy our concert this evening and that you will again generously support our nominated charity which this evening is Parkinson’s UK.
Irene Fox, Chair, Dalkeith Singers.
From the Musical Director
Our performance this evening draws upon spiritual and folk music
from across the world. The pieces stem from a variety of different
cultures and geographic locations. All speak in their own way of the
hopes and fears of the communities in which they originated.
We open our first half with the song cycle Feel the Spirit, - John
Rutter’s beautiful arrangements of African-American spirituals. The
songs combine words that tell of the hardship and longing of life under American
slavery with age-old melodies in Rutter’s distinctive arrangements. We then turn to
Africa to round off our first half, with a Namibian prayer Meguru. Our second half opens
with a distinctly European flavour in the form of Mozart’s ‘Laudate Dominum’ from
Vesperae solennes de confessore. We then pop in to Tennessee before coming home to
sing a couple of Scottish folk songs, and end on a high note (Swedish style!) with our
ABBA medley.
I very much hope you enjoy our performance this evening. On a personal note, I would
like sincerely to thank everyone for making me feel so welcome in my first term with
the Dalkeith Singers. I have been impressed by the enthusiasm, energy and dedication
that they have shown and it is a pleasure to work with such a friendly bunch. I very
much look forward to my time ahead as a member of the Dalkeith Singers family.
