LIFE IS ALL ABOUT COMPROMISES. YOU MIGHT HAVE TO WALK 15 MINUTES TO GET TO THE MAIN CAMPUS BUT YOU’VE GOT A BUNCH OF OTHER STUFF RIGHT ON YOUR DOORSTEP. YOU’RE A 20 MINUTE WALK FROM THE BRIGHT LIGHTS OF ABERDEEN AND A SHORT BUS RIDE TO THE CITY CENTRE.

Hillhead Halls include Adam Smith House, Wavell House, Fyfe House, Esslemont House, Burnett House, Keith House, Hector Boece Court, South House, North Court and New Carnegie Court.

There are all-weather footie pitches and tennis courts opposite the main entrance. If you don’t want to brave the cold then book in for a free game of badminton or table tennis at the indoor sports hall.

You might want to quench your thirst at the student bar in the central building; one of the most popular student bars in Aberdeen. It’s cheap, it’s lively and it’s the place to meet before clubbing.

Get your head down in the computer rooms; you’ll find two in the Central Building.

With free wireless access in all University residences all you need to do is register with the Computer Centre. Checkout www.abdn.ac.uk/wireless and keep in touch with student email@ www.abdn.ac.uk/studentmail

For all you Liberachi’s, the music rooms, complete with piano, are based on the lower ground floor of the Central Building. If you want to book a room just pay a visit to the Porters Desk.

Stock up at the mini-market on all those cans of beans, groceries and stationery. It’s licensed too! Open 7 days a week.

There’s only so long you can get away with not washing your clothes and unfortunately we have launderettes on site. It’s also a great meeting place, used by lots of fellow residents so guard your smalls! Launderettes are open 24 hours a day. The machines are cash operated. A help-line is in operation for any machine failure or other queries. Please see the launderette noticeboards for details.

Look out for resident monthly e-newsletters sent direct to your University email account. This can contain important information from Hall Management as well as fun stuff like offers and events around Campus!

Your room

YOUR ROOM SAYS A LOT ABOUT WHO YOU ARE, SO FEEL FREE TO MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME. BUT PLEASE REMEMBER TO USE WHITE TAC SO YOUR POSTERS WON’T DAMAGE THE WALLS. YOU CAN BUY SOME FROM THE RECEPTION DESK OR SHOPHUB.

MOVING INMoving in day is pretty exciting. Remember to take your bedding with you which will make your room feel more like home.

CHECK OUT YOUR ROOM!Inventory forms will become available online once you’ve moved in to your room at www.abdn.ac.uk/eaccommodation. These forms should be completed within 7 days of your arrival. They’re optional, but if you don’t fill one in you could be charged for any discrepancies or damage we find in your room. If you don’t have computer access then you can get a hard copy of the inventory form from reception.

Inventory forms for New Carnegie Court residents are left in your rooms prior to your arrival. Please ensure you have read through your check-in inventories & returned the appropriate copies to the office within 48hours of checking in. If you can’t find a copy of the inventory in your room or flat then head down to reception.

A BREATH OF FRESH AIRSmoking is not allowed in accommodation blocks, public areas and University buildings and will result in disciplinary action and charges for additional cleaning and redecorating. See pages 36-37 for a full list of charges.

Make sure when opening and closing windows, you follow the instructions carefully. Window bars are there for your safety not your inconvenience or pleasure.

DO NOT REMOVE THE WINDOW CHAINS/RESTRICTORS. They’re there for your safety and extremely dangerous to remove. REMEMBER - ClOSE THE WINDOWS WHEN yOU GO OUT!

MAKE YOURSELF AT HOMEFeel free to make the place more homely:• TV’s –but get a licence –

it’s illegal not to have one• VCR/DVD• Music Equipment/Radios• Electric Kettles (with a heat cut-out)• PC’s• Hair dryers, shavers, etc.

WHAT NOT TO BRINGSeeing as you’ll have a few hundred neighbours for the next year you need to be considerate and contribute to the community spirit. That’s why we don’t allow the following:• Skateboards • Replica guns• Laser guns • Laser pens• Paintball guns • Surf boards• Air guns • Sporting knifes • Swords • Water pistols/bombs• Fan heaters • Shisha pipes• Candles, including tea lights

If you’re unsure about what you can and can’t bring then speak to the Management Team straight away. We have to confiscate unsuitable items - so save yourself the hassle!

Please do not hang things outside your windows. This can cause the handles on the windows to break and also makes a mess on the windows below when spillages occur.

Also, please do not throw things out of your windows - you will get caught and you will get a fine.

NEW CARNEGIE COURT HEATINGThere are heaters located in your bedroom and communal flat areas. They can sometimes be hard to understand how to use. For instructions of how to use and what the lights mean, log into your Personal Homepage.

TS’ ASSISTANTS TEAM

THE STUDENT RESIDENTS’ ASSISTANTS ARE HERE FOR YOUR SAFETY, SECURITY AND SUPPORT. YOU CAN GO TO THEM ABOUT ANY ISSUES OR PROBLEMS.

SRA team

The team of Student Residents’ Assistants (SRA’s) are there to look after the welfare of residents. They are based in each Hall of Residence or cluster of Halls and on duty from 6pm to 6am weekdays and from 12 noon to 6am on Saturdays and Sundays.

You can go to them with any welfare concern you might have e.g. homesickness, exam worries, relationship or family problems, financial difficulties, tensions between flatmates or simply to talk in confidence. They can provide friendly, confidential advice and help point you in the right direction of appropriate professional services.

SRAs have an office base on campus and at Hillhead so you know where to find them. We also have a Student Community Centre where you can find leaflets and information on a whole range of issues and also great venue for residents’ events.

SRAs are assigned to particular groups of residents and will introduce themselves to you during Freshers Week. They will also organise social and sporting events throughout the year so you will have plenty of opportunities to meet fellow residents having some fun or chilling out together.

We want you to feel part of a supportive, friendly and responsible community while you are living in Halls and we want everyone to feel like a valued member of that community. That means having consideration and respect for your fellow resident and hall staff and getting involved in community life.

SRAs will be organising residents meetings and forums giving you the opportunity to suggest ideas on a range of issues e.g. on events you would like to see on site, service improvements, how to deal with antisocial behaviour etc. The Residents forums will be your opportunity to shape your residence community so please get involved.

Keep in touch by becoming a fan of our Facebook site - search for livinginhallsaberdeen

COMMUNITY SPIRITYou have just moved into your new home where lots of different students with different backgrounds, lifestyles and expectations are also now living. It can be a bit of a culture shock! So a few tips to settle in with your new flatmates...

• Be considerate• Be aware of other residents and their

rights to a peaceful and pleasant stay too

It’s a good idea when sharing to get a few ground rules set with your flatmates early on in Freshers Week to agree on allocating space in the fridge, recycling, washing up, cleaning/cooking rotas, guests staying over, parties and what’s acceptable in terms of noise levels. It is worth noting that persistent noise complaints will lead to disciplinary action.

If problems do arise speak to your SRAs with all the flatmates and resolve any difficulties early on.

PLANNING A PARTY?You’ll make loads of friends while you’re here and you’ll probably want to invite some of them over from time to time. Don’t annoy your neighbours... book an official party. Ask at reception for a booking form. Or you can book part at The Union Bar if you want to party and dance all night! Plenty of space to have some friends over and have some fun!

Parties are permitted Friday and Saturday only and must be finished and cleared up by midnight. You will be liable for any damage and of course the behaviour of your guests. Contact the SRAs for details.

YouÊll be pleased to hear that you can add all your new friends to Facebook anytime you like with wireless internet. Find out all the juicy details at abdn.ac.uk/wireless.

One thing to remember is

consideration for others. DonÊt

make loads of noise. It Êll put you

in the bad books with the

wardens and your housemates.

As a general rule, you need to

turn the volume down by 11pm

so everyone else can sleep or

study without interruption.

And, of course, you can invite those

friends over for a bit of a party on

Friday and Saturday nights. DonÊt

make yourself too popular as you

wonÊt get everyone in! Make sure

you tell the warden at least 48 hours

in advance and watch out for

gatecrashers. More often than

not they are only there to cause

trouble and if they cause damage

then youÊll end up paying for it.

DOWN ATPM

MAXEDOUT?

It’s also worth checking out the full Disciplinary Procedures before you set a date for your soiree. You can download a copy from your eAccommodation portal at www.abdn.ac.uk/eaccommodation

DON’T DO ANY DAMAGEIt’s not hard to show a bit of respect and that’s all we ask really. It’s up to you to look after your room or flat, all the communal areas, yes...including the rubbish in the quad, and to take responsibility for the behaviour of your guests. Be careful not to damage any walls or woodwork with blu tac, drawing pins and sellotape. charges could apply and result in disciplinary action, so it’s really not worth it. See pages 36-37 for a full list of charges.

Leaflets and flyers are not permitted to be handed out or left withour prior permission. Anyone found handing out or leaving leaflets for nightclubs, promoters, societies etc could face disciplinary action. If you are unsure if you are allowed to leave flyers, please ask at reception or the porters desk for clarification.

Smoking is not allowed in accommodation blocks, public areas and University buildings and will result in disciplinary action and charges for additional cleaning and redecorating. See pages 36-37 for a full list of charges

ROOM WITH A VIEWEveryone likes some nice scenery and the grounds surrounding the Halls are there for your enjoyment. So keep them looking nice and don’t cause any damage to the trees, planted areas or wildlife. Avoid the grass if it’s wet and head for the Sport Centre for ball games and a spot of frisbee.www.abdn.ac.uk/sportandexercise

We know its hard to carry your shopping back from the supermarket, but please don’t take the trollies back with you.

Getting around

WITH OVER 18,000 PEOPLE ON CAMPUS, OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT IS QUITE LARGE, SO WE’VE GOT A SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL PLAN TO KEEP IT DOWN.

BIKESYou’ll find plenty of bike sheds around the campus and also at Hillhead. If you are living at Crombie Johnston contact us about getting access to the bike sheds. Make sure you lock your bike up and add it to your insurance just in case someone takes a shine to it. Keep a note of the frame number, colour and make.

Don’t store your bike inside or obstruct the entrances. If you do we’ll move it and you’ll have to pay to get it back.

MOTORBIKESDon’t ride motorbikes on the paths. Any repairs, do it in one of the car parks and don’t park in or against the buildings or near emergency access.

BY BUSThe No 20 bus takes you from the city centre, past Crombie Johnston and into the heart of Campus then onto Hillhead. The No 19 is ideal for the Zoology building, QML, Meston and Fraser Noble into Union Street. The No 1 and 2 on King Street also takes you from Campus into town. The no. 6 also links Hillhead, Old Aberdeen and Foresterhill.

WALKLoads of places in Aberdeen are within easy walking distance. Take care during dark nights and walk in groups rather than alone – it’s more fun that way as well as being safer.

CARS ON CAMPUSIn line with the University’s policy on car parking, student parking is available at the Butchart Building. For more details on car parking charges and how to apply for a permit please visit www.abdn.ac.uk/estates/supportservices/car_parking.

Parking Charge Notices (PCN) of £60 may be issued to vehicles parked in contravention of the parking regulations.

PARKING AT HILLHEAD For more details on car parking charges and how to apply for a permit please visit www.abdn.ac.uk/estates/supportservices/car_parking.

You must apply for a parking permit once you have arrived which must be displayed in your windscreen at all times – no permit, no parking! Cars parked on site are at owner’s risk and we do not accept liability for damage or theft.

Parking Charge Notices (PCN) of £60 may be issued to vehicles parked in contravention of the parking regulations.

TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS • Observe the one way system.• Stick to the 10 mph speed limit.• Keep all roads clear for emergency

vehicles and public transport. • Observe parking and double yellow

lines.• If you are staying over the summer,

make sure your car is registered with reception or it could end up on the scrapheap as we’ll assume it’s abandoned and bill you £150.

HEALTH

Health

STAYING HAPPY AND HEALTHYGet yourself registered with a doctor who can come out to you in halls if you’re feeling too ill to get out of bed.

University can be stressful, you can get homesick and you can get yourself into some difficult situations. Just don’t be afraid to ask for help.

NEED A DOCTOR?You can make a call out yourself, just call NHS 24 on 08454 24 24 24.

You can make a call yourself, or ask at reception for assistance. In addition you can request to see your SRA or Hall Manager who will be totally non-judgemental and supportive.

If you have to go to hospital via ambulance or taxi, the porter will make a note so that, if you want, the SRA can email your advisor/supervisor to let them know that you may not be in class.

If you call an ambulance, make sure that you inform a member of staff so that they can meet the Ambulance and take them directly to your location.

NEED A DENTIST?Need help to access NHS dental services in Grampian?

Call 08454 56 59 90

Open 9am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.

It’s no smoking in the University buildings and if you don’t fancy standing out in the rain you could have a chat to your new GP about ways to stop. You can speak to them about any other issues that might be a bit sensitive, like STDs, depression, drinking or diet.

And when it comes to diet you can be sure to get a hearty healthy meal from one many of the tasty places to eat on campus.

It’s hard to avoid the issue of drugs these days. If you are concerned about drug use, want to talk to someone or just want some advice you can talk to your SRA, Student Advice & Support Office or the University Counselling Service located in the Hub.

SAFETY - PER

SON

AL SAFETY

Personal Safety

OUT AND ABOUTBe sensible about when and where you walk. Behave as you would do at home and don’t take lifts from people you don’t know.

Be alert when walking up lanes alone, especially after dark or on your way back to Campus after a night out.

If you are going to Hillhead, the quickest route to the campus is via St Machar Drive and Don Street. The elevated walkway was put there to keep you safe so make sure you use it.

HILLHEAD RESIDENTSRemember that cars drive on the left hand side of the road in the UK.

The cycle lane on Don Street (on the left hand side of the road) is only for use of bicycles going up the hill to Hillhead. KEEP TO THE lEFT WHEN USING All ROADS.

Seaton Park is beautiful but make sure you appreciate it in the day time and don’t find yourself in there at night, especially after a few drinks. Stick to the pavements. Wandering in the road with a group of friends is not wise.

If you’d rather get the bus, you can catch one from the high street.

SITE SAFETYAlthough we have CCTV it’s important to keep your eyes open for anyone who looks suspicious, especially when you’re going into Halls and someone is coming through the door behind you who may not be a resident. Especially at Hillhead, where there are lots of different entrances and residents.

PERSONAL SAFETY AND SECURITY It’s important to keep your eyes open for anyone who looks suspicious, especially when you’re going into Halls and someone is coming through the door behind you who may not be a resident. Don’t let strangers into your building. If the caller is not for you, don’t let them in.

Please telephone the Porter if you think there is anyone suspicous on site.

Plan ahead. Don’t walk home alone at night - arrange in advance to stay with a friend or pre-book a taxi.

Beware of drink spiking. Never leave your drink unattended. Drink responsibly, know your limit. Being under the influence of alcohol is no excuse for criminal or antisocial behaviour.

Be alert when withdrawing cash from ATMs. Report anything suspicious about the cash machine immediately to the bank or police. Look after your wallet too.

Make sure you return your room key at the end of term, or when you terminate your contract. If you go away for the weekend, you can leave your key at reception or porters desk - even if you are out for the evening. If you do lose your keys let reception know straight away so they can sort out a replacement set. Try not to let it happen though because we will have to charge you.

GET INSUREDYou’ll be pleased to hear that all University of Aberdeen student accommodation has personal contents insurance cover with Endsleigh Insurance.

If you are a New Carnegie Court resident visit www.unite-students.com/livingwithunite to read more about your insurance and what you are covered for.

Visit the Accommodation website www.abdn.ac.uk/accommodation for more information.

Your personal insurance certificate is in your welcome pack. The level of cover is detailed on the certificate and on the Endsleigh website.

Laptops, mobile telephones and bicycles are the most common items stolen from students. Look after your property before someone else does!

If you want to extend the level of insurance to cover bikes and cars etc or need to make a claim, then get in touch with Endsleigh via the website.

AROUND CAMPUSAlways secure your bicycle with a good strong lock to a fence, tree or railing when unattended, even if it’s only for a few minutes.

Never leave property visible in your car. A coat or bag in the back sear could tempt a thief to break in. Try to park in busy well lit areas.

DOOR ACCESSIF yOU ARE A RESIDENT ON THE GROUND FlOOR, ENSURE THAT yOUR WINDOWS AND DOORS ARE lOCKED ON EVERy OCCASION THE ROOM IS UNOCCUPIED.

Rember to lock your doors when you leave your room. You never know when a thief is going to strike.

If you go out in the evening, you canleave your key at reception orporters desk. If you do lose your keysthen let reception know straightaway so they can sort out areplacement set. Try not to let ithappen though because we willhave to charge you.

At New Carnegie Court your flat and bedroom door locks are battery operated. All batteries are renewed during the summer however from time to time the batteries do run down and you are given a warning light of amber before the lock completely fails. While accessing your bedroom or flat should you see it flash amber please contact the office as soon as possible to ensure we can renew the batteries before the lock fails and you end up locked out

FIRE SAFETY

Fire Safety

FIRE INSTRUCTIONSFire instructions are attached to your room door. It’s probably best to READ THEM NOW instead of waiting till they’re actually on fire.

It is your responsibility to know where the nearest fire exits and assembly points are, as well as break glass points and fire fighting equipment.

Check out the signs on the back of your doors which has all this information on it. SMOKE DETECTORSAll Fire/Heat/Smoke/CO detectors are designed to provide early warning of a fire and the slightest waft of smoke will set them off, so don’t keep burning the toast or your house mates might put a ban on bread. But do not cover the smoke detectors either - they may save your life! Here’s a few ideas to avoid setting the alarms off:

• Close the kitchen/pantry door if there’s going to be any fumes or smoke while you are cooking.

• Don’t use electrical kitchen items in rooms other than kitchens or pantries (so no hotplates in your bedroom or sandwich toasters on the stairs).

CHECK OUT THE FIRE SAFETY DVD ON YOUR INDUCTION WWW.ABDN.AC.UK/EACCOMMODATION

INTERFERENCE WITH OR MISUSE OF FIRE SAFETY EQUIPMENTIt is a criminal act to interfere with, misuse or remove any such equipment:

• Fire extinguishers• Fire alarm systems• Smoke detectors (including covering up)• Break glass alarm call points• Fire exit signs

These are all there to protect life and property. Tampering with fire equipment can result in a fine of £250.

Always set off the fire alarm if you think there’s a fire. But ONLY if there is. Setting off the alarm for any other reason will get you into serious trouble with the University, the Fire Brigade and the Police.

Routine inspection of extinguishers is carried out on a weekly basis so don’t tamper with anything or you’ll get charged for a replacement.

PREVENTING FIRESIt should be obvious, but don’t put stuff in front of the Fire Escape Routes.

Don’t store your traffic cones, trolleys, overflowing bins and bicycles anywhere in the corridors.

Don’t fit exercise bars on doorways. They get in the way if there’s a fire and no one wants to watch your sweaty attempts at exercise.

SMOKING IS NOT AllOWED IN UNIVERSITy ACCOMMODATION AND WIll RESUlT IN DISCIPlINARy ACTION AND CHARGES FOR ADDITIONAl ClEANING AND REDECORATING. See pages 36-37 for a full list of charges.

NO CAUSE FOR ALARMHere are some simple guidelines to help prevent fires:

• Never cook after drinking alcohol (that’s what the kebab shops are for)

• Never leave cooking unattended(it’s a hazard – and other hungry students may take advantage)

• Keep kitchen doors closed at all times

• Never overfill any pan (hold back on those supermarket value beans)

• Never overload plugs, make sure extension cables are suited to the appliances you have plugged in and ALWAYS use UK approved adaptors for international appliances

• Ensure leads and flexes are in good condition

• Check the fuse is the right size for the appliance

• Unplug electrical appliances that are not designed to be left on, before going to bed and when going out

• Switch off your electric blanket before going to bed if it is not designed to remain on.

• Smoking is not allowed in university accommodation and will result in disciplinary action and charges for additional cleaning and redecorating.

• No Candles or Fairy lights are allowed in University accommodation.

CHECK OUT THE FIRE SAFETY DVD ON YOUR INDUCTION WWW.ABDN.AC.UK/EACCOMMODATION

IF YOU DISCOVER A FIRE:1. Whilst exiting the building

immediately break the glass over the nearest fire alarm button.

2. Go to the nearest telephone and dial (9)999.

3. When the Fire Brigade answers, say ‘Fire’ at (Crombie Johnston/Hillhead/Elphinstone – block, room or flat) and give full address details.

4. Go to your assembly point.

The porters deal with all fire alarm activations - pass on any information you have about the fire to them.

If smoke is emerging from a closed door, never open the door to investigate, follow the procedures above.

ON HEARING THE ALARM IN YOUR OWN BLOCK:1. Close the window and door of your

room.2. Leave the building quickly,

but without running.3. Go immediately to your assembly

point and await further instructions from the portering staff.

4. Remain at the Assembly Point until dismissed, or instructed to proceed elsewhere.

ASSEMBLY POINTS ARE DETAILED IN FULL ON THE BACK OF YOUR DOOR.

ALCOHOLAlcohol is something to be enjoyed and a lot of students certainly do enjoy it! However, it is good to be aware of the guidelines and the risks so that you can choose for yourself how much you want to drink.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help and try to do what you can to avoid liver damage, STDs and pregnancy. It’s just about using a bit of common sense really but a good place to go for advice, information and free condoms is the Student Association Info & Advice Centre.

In addition you can request to see the Duty SRA or manager who will be totally non-judgemental and supportive.

TAlK TO FRANK AT WWW.TAlKTOFRANK.COM

KNOW THE SCORE WWW.KNOWTHESCORE.INFO

DRUGSWe in no way condone drug use however it would be foolish to assume that this never happens. Should you find yourself in a position where drugs are, or have been taken, it is important to know what to do.

Not only do drugs affect your health, but it can also affect your criminal record. Most drugs are illegal, and if you are caught abusing them, or supplying them, then you are at risk of facing legal action.

The Misuse of Drugs Act states that both POSSESSION and SUPPLYING of controlled drugs is illegal.

Know the Score - Aberdeen Royal Infirmary have been treating an increasing number of patients who have taken substances like NRG-1, MCAT and Ivory Wave.

Common physical symptoms have included increased blood pressure, heart rate and temperature, abnormal and uncontrollable muscle movement and sweating. Psychological symptons are common and severe, including agitation, anxiety and paranoia.

These symptoms appear to persist for a prolonged period after taking the legal high drugs and in some cases several days and has resulted in a number of patients requiring hospital admission.
