AmCham Okinawa Colleague – November 2012
It’s amazing how fast this year has zipped by, and our American Chamber of Commerce in Okinawa
hasn’t had many dull moments. For that matter, we’ve a pretty fast paced couple of months ahead, too.
Our General Membership Meeting this month is devoted to annual elections for offi cers and governors. We appreciate your turnout and support, and look forward to your even more committed involvement in the year ahead. Our chamber’s only as successful as you make it, and that means getting hooked up with a committee or two, and working to make our organization even better.
We welcome China Airlines as guest speaker this month. Ms. Annie Huang is one of China Airlines’ rising stars, having been in a variety of positions with the international carrier, starting as a fl ight attendant and moving across a diverse set of assignments. She’s talking about the SkyTeam carrier’s new directions. China Airlines is also one of our longtime, dedicated sponsors for the President’s Ball.
Speaking of which, if you’ve not marked your calendar for December 22nd, please do so now. Make reservations for yourself, business colleagues and friends. It’s going to be a super evening at the Okinawa Harborview Crowne Plaza. Terrifi c food, entertainment, prizes and a whole lot more. Reservations for individual tickets, and for complete tables, can be accomplished with Megumi in the Chamber offi ce. Tickets are ¥7,000 for members and ¥7,500 for non-members.
Our Chamber was a highly visible yellow force at October’s 42nd Naha Great Tug of War Festival, hosted by the Conservatory Society of the Naha Giant Tug of War. We had more than 55 volunteers from ACCO and the Single Marines program taking part, helping the 275,000 people attending to enjoy the tug-of-war with the 200-meter-long, 40-ton rope being moved one meter in a half-hour. The West team won, incidentally.
Past president Michael Kelly represented ACCO at the 6th Okinawa Peace Prize Awards Ceremony at the Bankoku Shinryokan in Nago. The award was presented this year to Mr. Toyokazu Nakata of Shapla Neer, a Citizens Committee in Japan for overseas support for 38years as a volunteer, non-governmental organization. Your president joined the 32nd National Convention Okinawa Naha meeting last month of the Central Federation of Youth Leagues of Societies of Commerce and Industry. The organization’s convention takes place early next
year in Okinawa. The Halloween Mihama 2012 Costume Contest took
place at the American Village in Mihama, Chatan. We’re pleased to have participated as a judge for the event, which drew more than 200 contestants.
See you all soon and thank you for your support.

Ms. Huang was born in 1962 and graduated from Taipei’s Fu-Jen Catholic University in 1984 and majored in Economics. She started her career as a fl ight attendant with China Airlines from 1984 to 1995. In 1996, Ms Huang was selected to lead a Task Force to improve China Airlines worldwide airport VIP lounge services. This program was proved a success as passengers’ satisfactory index increased substantially.
In 1997-2000, Ms Huang joined Marketing Service Division and was in charge of fl eet interior planning. She was involved in 11 737-800s new fl eet cabin design and 747-400 fl eet reconfi guration program valued at more than USD$80 Million.
In 2000-2004, she became the fi rst female sales manager in Engineering & Maintenance Division responsible for 3rd party maintenance business. She won the aircraft over-night transit maintenance business at Taipei airport from major clients such as Singapore Airlines and Air Hong Kong. She also helped to secure cargo airlines included Fedex mid-level aircraft maintenance at Taipei.
In 2002, recommended by China Airlines, she was awarded with BTCO(British Trade & Cultural Offi ce) scholarship to study 1 year abroad. She earned a Master degree in Air Transport Management at Cranfi eld University in UK.
In 2004-2007, Ms Huang was appointed GM of Ground Handling Agreement dealing with 50+ worldwide airlines and 70+ international airports for airport service, of which the annual budget is USD$300M. As airline industry is capital intensive, it is imperative for airlines to cooperate with each other for cost-effective services. During her tenure, Ms Huang successfully worked with Japan Airlines to lower both parties’ airport handling cost in Japan and Taiwan up to JPY$150M per year while maintaining service quality and mutual business relationship.
In 2007-2009, she was appointed the GM of Media Affairs managing corporate image enhancement and communication with media worldwide. As China Airlines is the fl ag carrier of Taiwan ROC operating 100+ destinations (in 28 countries), it is a 24-hour job assignment to answer global media’s questions correctly and effi ciently. The extensive work of internal coordination and external communication further strengthened her ability to tackle unexpected challenges.
In 2009-2011, Ms. Huang took up the position of GM of Strategic Management that plans for cooperate long-term development including route network and fl eet expansion. It demanded in-depth quantitative analysis and strategic intention to reach the equilibrium of long-term expansion and short-term profi tability, and this experience helped her to build up a broader view of airline management.
From October of 2011, Ms. Huang was appointed the GM of Okinawa Offi ce. Being the fi rst female manager in Japan, she would dedicate herself to serving people in Okinawa and strengthening ties between Okinawa and the world.
