1 INTRODUCTION ROMWalks are given by the Department of Museum Volunteers at the Royal Ontario Museum. The season is from May to October and consists of:

1.1 Free ROMWalks This year, 36 free walks, of 9 neighbourhoods will be offered. No registration needed. Meet at designated spot just before starting time. Walks are on Sundays at 2pm and Wednesdays at 6pm. Information is available at https://www.rom.on.ca/romwalks or call 416.586.8097

1.2 ROMWalks Plus Three different walks will be offered this 2019 walking season for a limited number of participants. The cost is $10.00 per person. Tickets must be reserved in advance and can be booked online at www.rom.on.ca/romwalks or call 416.586.5797 for information and to reserve tickets.

1.3 Member Exclusive ROMWalks These Member exclusive walks are free for Members, however registration is required. Due to the popularity of these walks, registration will not open until a month prior to the scheduled walk. Watch your email communication for registration dates and register at www.rom.on.ca/members/events or call 416.586.5700.

1.4 Private Group ROMWalks Our private group walks are available for all scheduled 2019 ROMWalks, plus these additional walks:

3.1 Queen’s Park Circle (Map walk 1) 3.1.1 Wednesday May 15, Sunday Jun 30, Wednesday Aug 7, Sunday Sep 8 3.1.2 The provincial legislature, the mansions on Queen’s Park Crescent, St.

Michael’s University, Victoria University. Learn their stories and their secrets, while seeing some new and interesting Toronto architecture.

3.1.3 Route goes from the front of the provincial legislative building, north on the west side and along to Wellesley & Queen’s Park Circle, north to St Joseph Street, through the St Michael’s College & Victoria College campuses, ending at the Isabel Bader Theatre.

3.1.4 STARTING POINT: In front of the legislative buildings

3.1.5 TTC ACCESS: Queen’s Park stop on Line 1 or the 506 College streetcar

3.2 Sacred Stones & Steeples(Map walk 2) 3.2.1 Sunday May 12, Wednesday Jun 12, Sunday Jul 21, Wednesday Aug 21 3.2.2 While exploring the landmark religious buildings along Church and Bond

Streets, including the recently restored St. Michael’s Cathedral, learn about the role of the church in the social development of the city and Upper Canada.

3.2.3 The route proceeds from St. James Cathedral to Metropolitan United Church, and north on Bond Street ending at Ryerson University

3.2.4 STARTING POINT: Northeast corner of Church & King Streets

3.2.5 TTC ACCESS: King Station on Line 1 or the 504 and 514 King streetcars

3.3 Jarvis Street(Map walk 3) 3.3.1 Wednesday May 29, Sunday Jun 23, Wednesday Jul 24, Sunday Aug 25 3.3.2 Once the most fashionable address in Toronto,Jarvis Street still has many of

its old mansions and churches and has acquired new architectural gems too. A walk down this street provides insight into its elegant past and energetic present.

3.3.3 The route proceeds from Church Street, east along Bloor Street East to Ted Rogers Way, and south along Jarvis Street ending at Gerrard Street East.

3.3.4 STARTING POINT: Bloor & Church Streets 3.3.5 TTC ACCESS: Bloor/Yonge Station

3.4 Citadels of Wealth(Map walk 2) 3.4.1 Sunday May 5, Sunday Jun 2, Wednesday Jun 26, Wednesday Jul 31 3.4.2 Join us as we tour the fascinating financial district. Examine the work of

world famous architects such as Mies van der Rohe, I. M. Pei and Santiago Calatrava. In addition, view interesting sculptures such as The Pasture.

3.4.3 A circular route starting at the Hockey Hall of Fame, then up to King & Yonge, west on King to the TD Centre, and ending inside Brookfield Place

3.4.4 STARTING POINT: Northwest corner of Front and Yonge Streets

3.5 Mount Pleasant Cemetery 1 3.5.1 Wednesday May 22, Wednesday Jun 19, Sunday Jul 28, Sunday Oct 20

3.5.2 In one of Toronto’s largest cemeteries, we will stroll through the beautiful treed landscape and hear the stories of people who were influential in the growth of Toronto during the Victorian era. We will learn about mourning customs, memorial styles and the meaning of symbols found on the monuments and mausoleums.

3.5.3 The route is circular within the western section of Mount Pleasant cemetery starting and ending at the entrance on Yonge Street.

3.5.4 STARTING POINT: Yonge Street entrance (north of St. Clair). 3.5.5 TTC ACCESS: St. Clair Station

3.6 Historic Danforth 3.6.1 Sunday May 19 (also in French), Wednesday Jul 10, Sunday Aug 4(also in

French), Wednesday Sep 4 3.6.2 Discover the rich history of “The Danforth” which includes beautiful heritage

homes, historical churches, the famous Music Hall and a former Nickelodeon. Hear about an early, influential family, the Playters.

3.6.3 The route proceeds from Danforth & Cambridge Avenues east along the Danforth to Playter Boulevard, along Playter Crecent and Jackman Avenue back to the Danforth, south along Bowden Street to Hogarth Avenue. west along Hogarth, ending at Broadview Avenue.

3.6.4 STARTING POINT: NW corner of Danforth and Cambridge Avenues (one block west of Broadview)

3.6.5 TTC ACCESS: Broadview Station on Line 2

3.7 Kensington 3.7.1 Wednesday May 8, Sunday Jul 14, Wednesday Aug 14, Sunday Sep 22 3.7.2 Join us on our new walk as we wander through what was once the old Jewish

Market, past late Victorian buildings that have undergone considerable change over the years, and onto the campus of the University of Toronto. Memories of times past mix with the modern life of condos, restaurants and music.

3.7.3 Route goes from Bellevue Park, along Baldwin & St Andrew Streets to Spadina Ave, north on Spadina to Willcocks Street, south to College Street, west to Bellevue Ave, ending at the Bellevue Fire Hall.

3.7.4 STARTING POINT: SW corner of Dundas Street West and Denison Avenue. 3.7.5 TTC ACCESS: Spadina or Bathurst streetcar, Dundas West Street stop

3.8 Rosedale 2 3.8.1 Wednesday Jun 5, Wednesday Jul 3, Sunday Aug 18, Sunday Oct 13 3.8.2 Explore the tree-lined streets of this prestigious enclave, the suburb of choice

for Toronto’s wealthy citizens in the early 1900s. We’ll view a National Historic Site and admire impressive domestic architecture built in a wide variety of styles over 150 years.

3.8.3 The route proceeds north on Park Road to South Drive via Severn Street, north on South Drive to Crescent Road, then west along Crecent to Cluny Drive, to Chestnut Park, ending at Chestnut Park and Roxborough Street East closest to Yonge Street.

3.8.4 STARTING POINT: Park Road at Bloor Street East 3.8.5 TTC ACCESS: Bloor/Yonge Station

3.9 Willowdale and York Cemetery – Farm to City Centre 3.9.1 Sunday Jun 16, Wednesday Jul 17, Wednesday Aug 28 (also in French),

Sunday Sep 29 3.9.2 Discover the transformation of the early farms of the 18th and 19th century

into the centre of the city of North York priortotheamalgamationof Toronto. We will also explore the tranquility, history and residents ofYork Cemetery just steps fromthebusytrafficand towering building of Yonge Street in the former North York.

3.9.3 The route proceeds from Mel Lastman Square to Gibson Park and Dempsey Park, inside York Cemetery, then along North York Boulevard to Yonge Street at Mel Lastman Square.

3.9.4 STARTING POINT: Mel Lastman Square at red Muskoka chairs on the NE corner close to Yonge Street.

3.9.5 TTC ACCESS: North York City Centre Station on Line 1

4 ROMWalks Plus

4.1 Annex West 4.1.1 Sundays, September 1 and October 6 at 2:00 pm 4.1.2 Come and explore the Annex neighbourhood west of Spadina. Learn about

the people and places including churches, schools, an historic pub, and a fire station - all spiced up with an occasional murder.

4.2 King Street East: Newspapers and Newsmakers 4.2.1 Sundays, June 9 and September 15 at 2:00 pm 4.2.2 Join us in exploring the characters who have shaped Toronto’s history along

its first main street, and the colourful history of the newspapers that have headquartered their operations there from the1820’s to the present day.

4.3 Riverdale 4.3.1 Sundays, July 7 and August 11 at 2:00 p.m. 4.3.2 Join us on a tour through Riverdale whose history includes indigenous

settlement, brickmakers, jailbreakers, medical facilities, a park and a Russian royal. Discover how this east end area has evolved over two centuries and continues to reflect the changing demographics of the city.

5 Member Exclusive ROMWalks

5.1 Arts & Entertainment 5.1.1 Saturdays, May 18 and August 10 5.1.2 Revisit the Entertainment District, rich in the early history of city expansion

and immigration, and now a vibrant area filled with theatres and upscale hotels. This walk will focus on the Arts and Entertainment of the past and present. It will include architecture as well as public art by Canadian artists.

5.2 Necropolis 5.2.1 Saturdays, June 15 and October 5 5.2.2 Toronto’s oldest non-denominational cemetery, the Necropolis is the final

resting place of rebels and reformers as well as many of Toronto’s early residents.

5.3 Waterfront 5.3.1 Saturdays, July 13 (also in French) and September 14 5.3.2 While strolling along Queens Quay from Bathurst to Queen’s Quay Terminal,

learn about the evolution of Toronto’s waterfront from its industrial and commercial origins. This tour will explore history, art and architecture as well as the recent, transformative revitalization of this area of the City.
