Welcome to the latest instalment of Access Asia. Digital innovation is the topic and there has been dramatic change and advancement in Singapore with Australian companies playing pivotal roles across the broad scope of the ICT space. The interview with Joe Ziegler is a fascinating insight into Telstra’s efforts to help boost startups via the muru-D incubator. This initiative has already gathered together some wonderful talent and it will be interesting to see these organisations grow and prosper. Inside, we also look at the latest trends in Big Data and look into the legal frameworks and intellectual property that’s related to digital media. There are major changes in the way technology impacts on the way we receive advertising and we look at what’s in store in this regard. We have a busy middle of the year, interesting because normally this is traditionally a slightly quieter time, but there is a lot to organise with 340 people eager to see Prime Minister Abbott for breakfast. We’re looking forward to hosting the special sold-out breakfast as well as supporting the High Commissioner and his team for the 50 BBQ’s event on Sunday 28 June. Come and join in and bring your families to help show appreciation to our Singaporean hosts. We Aussie’s often talk about home as the lucky country and we also speak fondly of our lives in Singapore. I think this is a great way to say a little thank you to Singapore. The Prime Minister will also be attending one of the BBQ’s so if you pick your spot you might just be able to flip a burger alongside him. Don’t forget the Australian Night at the Races on Friday 24 July, tickets have just gone on sale and we had many disappointed people last year as we quickly sold out. Thank you to everyone who attended the AGM on 11 June, we presented our results for last year and talked about upcoming activities for the Chamber. One of the things taking up a lot of energy at the moment are the preparations for the next roadshow in Australia. This time we’ve added Adelaide and Canberra and the schedule and event details will soon be on the AustCham website. Our aim is to help build knowledge of the opportunities in Asia and the importance of Singapore as a gateway for business into the ASEAN region. It might be useful for some of your senior management in Australia to come and listen and interact so feel free to share the details to your team back home. For those taking a summer break enjoy your well-earned rest and I look forward to the next few weeks with some exciting happenings in the AustCham world.

Joseph Ziegler, entrepreneur in residence, muru-D

Going troppo Going troppo Going troppo

AustCham: How long have you been working in Asia and what was your reason for coming?

Joseph: On and off for probably 10 years in total, with some breaks in the US and Australia. Working in innovation, I always loved the pace of doing business in Asia and the challenges of dealing with different languages and culture. The diversity in Asia keeps everything interesting and fresh when approaching problems.

AustCham: Why Singapore as the home for muru-D?

Joseph: As we were looking to expand our program beyond the original location in Sydney we wanted to make sure that we could continue to provide the most value for both our startups and also the ecosystem at large. When we look at the challenges and benefits for both the Australian and Singapore innovation systems, we can see that where one system is weaker, the other provides strength. For example, in Australia, venture capital is scarce, at the same time Singapore in 2013 had 17x the amount of venture capital available for startups. On the other side, we see many entrepreneurs and risk takers come out of Australia where in Singapore failure and risk should be avoided. Between the two countries, we have an opportunity to create a very strong support system for APAC based startups.

AustCham: You describe yourself as a big fan of cloud services, is this something you are still involved in outside of your day-to-day role?

Joseph: Let’s put it this way, if you have a startup and plan to buy computer servers instead of using the cloud, you better have a good reason before I can get behind the idea. The cloud has provided the catalyst for this innovation economy. Not using it as your core technology strategy is akin to buying a coal-fired generator for your factory. AustCham: You began your IT career in the Silicon Valley and went on to live in Australia and now Asia, was a global career always part of your plan?

Joseph: Actually yes. IT and computer engineering is a career that does not have any limitation in terms of geography or market vertical. I have been able to work in entertainment, marketing, legal services, academy and research in such places as Hollywood, New York, Paris, London, Hong Kong, Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, Australia and now Singapore. It is the one career that allows you to travel and still be able to contribute and find work. Or if you want, you can follow the Digital Nomad path and work remotely, living where you please.

AustCham: What’s the next big thing in digital innovation in APAC?

Joseph: ‘Mobile first’ is very interesting. So many of the ASEAN countries are able to leverage low cost 3G/4G networks and smart phones to watch media, solve business problems and connect with people. We will see more and more people producing both solutions and content for consumption across large markets, breaking a cycle of expensive middle brokers. Streaming media, self-publishing, low-cost business solutions available to everyone will disrupt incumbents in this market. That really is exciting, seeing innovation provide a positive impact into people’s lives in this part of the world. And on that, it’s also the opportunity to help drive and grow economies with technology, where a developer in Hanoi can provide the most profitable game on the app store and good designers in Cambodia compete globally.

AustCham: What advice do you have for people thinking of moving to Asia?

Joseph: Asia is the most diverse and challenging place I have ever lived, but it also one of the most rewarding in terms of life experience. Do not underestimate the differences in people and cultures. We are not all the same. However, once you spend some time getting to know people, what motivates them, their journey up until this point, you are able to adapt and work across the landscape. Be prepared, if you do decide to move to Asia you will change and in many cases when and if you return home you will see everything from a different perspective. Somewhat like choosing the red pill over the blue pill, there may be no going back.

AustCham: Can some of the key learnings from your time in the Silicon Valley be applied to Singapore?

Joseph: I really appreciate that most people in Singapore know you cannot duplicate Silicon Valley. It is an ecosystem that started back with defence budgets, then into Xerox PARC, HP, Netscape and finally into what it is today.

What is being done is ecosystem building and that is a slow process. Singapore focused heavily on early-stage startups in the past few years. How do we get two people with an idea to take a risk and build something? That has been largely successful. Now we are focusing on the next stages of the startup lifecycle – when the ideas of these early teams need to find traction and growth. At the same time, we stay pragmatic here. The valuation and business models of Silicon Valley may not apply in this environment. We stay more grounded, looking at solutions more typical to local markets that can provide more sustainable value rather than chasing unicorns in Asia.

AustCham: What opportunities does Singapore offer Australian startups?

Joseph: Access to funding. Access to the 600M person ASEAN market. Pro-business environment and trusted legal system in Asia as you expect in Australia. Access to most of the big MNC’s in Asia and an environment facing similar challenges that have been well addressed already in Australia but with new Asian developing nuances.

AustCham: A ‘unique support network’ is listed as one of muru-D’s key differences, how easy has it been to build that network in Asia?

Joseph: In some cases we can leverage what we did in Australia with Telstra. An example is a startup that focused on helping business hire qualified candidates that Telstra actually used in their own recruiting process. That’s a big win for an early stage startup and we can still leverage that support here. But we will have to foster the support from the network in Singapore and I expect to reach out to many of the relationships built in my time working here. We also have strong support from the local Telstra team and their customer base as well as other MNCs we are working with such as IBM and Amazon Web Services. Lastly, those early stage startups from the Singapore ecosystem, as mentioned before, are growing. As part of the “pay it forward’ principal within the startup ethos, they will be called on to mentor and work with the next generation.

The world of media and communications is now in a new era.

It’s a world that is far more digitised, far more connected and far more socialised.

This means the rate of influence is now faster than ever.

In the past, we would air a TV commercial, do testing a month later and then make improvements if required. Today, that change needs to occur in real time as brands now live or die with the click of a mouse.

The key to consumer connection will be through driving innovation that connects and the greatest influence on advertiser performance will continue to be the idea. This will mean that, almost an antidote to automation, we will begin to see a resurgence in creativity driven by content creation.

Technology-led innovation

Media agencies will slowly but surely morph into full service content agencies as well and an increasing amount of innovation is expected in this area. This involves not just playing with formats but also business

models. Clickable content is a whole new standard in content development, linked to e-commerce platforms. For example, a viewer can click on a handbag that a character is holding to find out more, ‘like’ it and buy it there and then.

It is increasingly resulting in a way of life where technology enables us to deeply access the world in the moment.

There is a ‘small data’ story unfolding simultaneously as a result of technology-led innovation. Data is helping to understand consumer mindsets as well as drive creativity. Connecting small packets of data generated by individual consumers held by non-traditional data owners is allowing us to “join the dots” and be anticipatory and serendipitous.

Looking ahead

So, where is all this going? Close to 80 per cent of all media interactions today are screen-based. And that number will only increase. Gradually, the industry is moving towards a scenario, where innovation will be managed by both the creative and communications agency. The new role of

lies in technology

The key to the future

creative technologist will work with creative teams and /or with channel planners. Their role will be to bring creative thinking in a new digital-eco-system that puts the consumer at the core.

It must be said here, that the future is hard to predict. It is very easy for us to make predictions on where the future of communications is going to be. The reality is that most companies tend to get such predictions wrong all the time. The truth is that we have to keep finding relevant trends that is going to affect consumers. So, rather than trying to predict where the future is going to be, we would like focus on the line of causality, in other words – what the consequences of one thing affecting another are. Technology affects the way consumers interact with each other and this consequently has an effect on communication.

Ultimately, the best place to start when you think about what is going to impact the future is to look at the changes in technology.

For years, Big Data has been labelled as the next big thing in technology and is still one of the hottest buzz words across all industries.

Big Data is the term used to describe the process of analysing complex data sets to discover information that could help make better decisions or find certain patterns that were previously unknown.

AustCham asked two of our members who have a strong presence in the digital space in APAC for their thoughts on Big Data and digital innovation.

Matt Harty, senior vice president of Asia Pacific, The Trade Desk

There is a lot of talk about Big Data. It seems to be the future of business, the end of privacy and challenging for companies getting into it. Big Data, when you say it, the words themselves are quite paralysing. So, let’s break it down and specifically talk about using data for marketing.

Firstly ask yourself if investing in data will make your marketing perform

better? The answer, in most cases, will be yes. The next step is to find easy and affordable starting points and to do this let’s investigate what the main types of data are that can be used to improve advertising performance.

The people who come to your website (known as Remarketing Data)There are over a billion people using the internet and few companies have more than a tiny fraction of this number interested in buying their products. If someone is interested enough to come to your website, it puts them into a distinct category. On the other hand, this should not be used as an excuse to hound this poor user for coming to your site. Empathy is important, think about when would you be annoyed by the ad frequency?

The people who are already your customers (known as First Party Data)Most companies rely on repeat business and knowing how to find your existing customers with the greatest efficiency is a real money saver.

This is why we as advertisers, loved email marketing. It’s cheap and direct but the only hitch is people hate getting promotional emails. Knowing who your customers are and being able to target them (and just them) rather than playing online videos or showing them banner ads is the emerging future of one-to-one marketing.

It is important at this point to introduce the concept of programmatic advertising. This uses the latest advances in technology to buy internet ads (and soon TV ads) on a one-to-one basis. With programmatic we have the option to choose from millions of ads per second, each ad targeted to just one person. This is a revolutionary step forward in efficiency and yield for advertisers.

The people who look a lot like your customers (known as Third Party Data Modelling)If your customers are found to have traits in common with each other, then people who share these traits can be statistically higher value prospects than the average person. In the industry we call this look-alikes and it is a proven way to use data to reduce cost of customer acquisition.

The people that other companies know (Third Party Data)Some companies know quite a lot about their customers and are open to letting you use their data in your marketing campaigns, mostly for a fee. Companies (called Data Exchanges) have grown up around programmatic advertising and offer marketplaces where companies can buy and sell data. The kind of data that is sold is often demographics (age, gender) or may have behavioural qualities (this person is looking to buy a car). Smart marketers are starting to use this to short-cut their search for buyers of their products.

Companies like Google and Yahoo! have brought together curated marketplaces for advertising. This includes their websites and many other publishers both large and small. These marketplaces can reach (in most countries) 90 per cent or more of internet users. How this differs from broadcast is the uniquely targeted buys that use data to show ads to only the people that the data suggests are the best prospects. No form of advertising has ever had this level of targeting and scale before.

So the hype is deserved. The starting points can be as simple as just targeting the people who land on your webpages. The future of marketing is guided by data. The positive economics of data and programmatic advertising make going back to broadcast advertising unthinkable.

Why you need to understand Big Data and innovation nowDe-mystifying one of the industry’s biggest buzz words

Innovation trendsAside from Big Data which Matt has outlined, here are a few other innovation trends:

Location-based servicesCompanies like malls, sporting grounds and airports are increasingly using your physical location to make the experience more engaging. For instance; imagine an airport app that tells you when you need to start walking to your gate and alerts you to changes in departure time. Imagine your banks’ app could remind you to use the loyalty points for a free dessert at the restaurant you’re at or imagine a mall app that reminds you where you parked your car! Location services facilitate a way for Big Data to be useful to people in the right place at the right time.

Cloud The cloud is a very complex technology infrastructure that is for open for rent, meaning organisations don’t have massive upfront infrastructure costs. They do however have cheap access to enterprise-grade machinery, meaning complex and high-volume tasks are now easily accessible. It’s access to the cloud that makes a lot of today’s innovation possible.

Innovation case studyIn 2013 the Stockholm South General Hospital in Sweden set a goal to increase the survival rate of cardiac arrest patients by 50 percent when the event happened outside a hospital. With increased funding for more hospitals and paramedics not an option, the hospital developed an innovative solution, with borrowed technology from the retail sector. Location-based services have been in use for several years as a marketing tool to alert shoppers to nearby special offers and help to navigate them to local stores and around public spaces. The hospital implemented a country-wide programme where those with CPR skills could register to receive a notification when there was a heart attack victim within 500 metres. When an emergency call was received, those nearby were alerted. In 40 percent of cases, good samaritans reached the victim before an ambulance. This case illustrates that technology and ideas in other arenas can be used to address challenges in totally different fields.

Digital innovation is easier than you think!

Contrary to common thought, innovation is not the same as invention.

Innovation is not about creating something entirely new to the world; rather it is about borrowing existing ideas, massaging them to fit your industry and applying them to create new value.

What can you learn from your Nespresso machine, iPhone or Uber ride to make your product easier, cheaper, faster or more versatile?

These products weren’t new inventions – coffee machines, phones and taxis are old concepts – but a new twist made these seemingly dull products appealing and even aspirational.

Digital innovation is all about the ability to replace a small part of your product with a smarter, digital process. It doesn’t require a carte blanche approach, just a new twist to one aspect of the value chain. Think of Uber or GrabTaxi, and how they redesigned one component of the process to totally change the industry.

9

Top 3 reasons for Big Data

• It helps you understand your customers’ journey. At the moment, retailers knowledge is limited to purchase history. Big Data will help to tell you the rest of the story – what else are they interested in? What did they think of the purchase? Did they come in to the store with intent to purchase, but didn’t for some reason?

• It helps you influence a customer’s decision. New inputs like social media and location-based services can help you understand when you’re about to gain or lose a customer.

An existing customer may ‘like’ your competitor on Facebook and visit your store less often. That’s the time to upgrade them, offer a discount or delight them in some way.

• Because everyone else is! Assuming its right for you, Big Data is a necessity because your competitors are doing it and you’ll be left behind while they steal your customers.

Australian Trade Commission

Aussie tech co’s prove they’re ready for Singapore’s digital future

Australia was well represented during the show.

Delegates at the trade show in Marina Bay Sands.

The best of Australian technology and ingenuity was recently on show here in Singapore, at the CommunicAsia and BroadcastAsia trade events.

These events presented Australian ICT companies with the platform to not only showcase Australia’s prowess in innovative technology solutions but also to understand the opportunities presented by the Singapore Government’s plans for a digital future, a plan they call their “Smart Nation Vision”.

“Smart Nation” is about building a technology platform to connect the whole of Singapore through a cost-effective and scalable communications infrastructure, collecting real time information, and ensuring this information is analysed to achieve better outcomes and solutions for Singapore citizens and businesses. Sectors such as healthcare, transport and communications, can be readily operationalised under the Smart Nation vision.

Held from the 2 to 5 June 2015, CommunicAsia2015, and concurrent event, BroadcastAsia2015, saw participation from some 40 Australian exhibitors across five floors of the Marina Bay Sands exhibition centre.

Besides the exhibiting firms, there were also representatives from some 25 companies that had attended the event for networking and fact-finding.

The Australians presented some amazing new technologies at the shows. For example:• NICTA presented Project MAGIC, their big data analytics capability.

‘MAGIC’ is a tool that measures the trade-off between data fidelity and privacy, and solves the problem of maintaining privacy while analysing large data sets.

• Miller Camera Support Equipment presented a special camera tripod constructed of corrosion resistant material that offers advance precision fluid drag control with counterbalance systems.

• Lightning Protection International demonstrated their enhanced lightning protection equipment. They already have an impressive roster of Singapore customers, including Nanyang Technological University, Gardens by the Bay and Parkway Parade Shopping Centre.

• Streamline Solutions showed off their cloud computing capabilities which allow for seamless connection across different function points and are applicable to health care and financial services.

• flexAnswer demonstrated their FAQ software solutions which have been well-received by Singapore clients; in fact they renewed their five year contract with the Changi Airport Group during the show.

As an adjunct to the show itself, Austrade held its IT Industry Networking Event, which featured presentations from Victorian State Minister Steve Herbert and the Infocomm Development Authority’s Executive Deputy Chairman, Steve Leonard.

Mr Leonard mapped out the Singapore Government’s vision for a digital future. The 200-strong audience, the crème of both the Australian and Singaporean IT industries, heard Mr Leonard speak of the drive to identify and incorporate leading edge, disruptive technologies into Singapore’s blueprint for the future. In all, Australia put on an impressive and innovative showing. We are confident this is a further step on a journey that shapes Australian contribution to Singapore’s ambitious plans for creating a “Smart Nation”.

Tell us a little about your story and how you came to Singapore?I am originally from Brisbane and prior to moving to Singapore, I lived in Sydney working as a media lawyer. I was looking for a new challenge and an overseas adventure with an Asian focus. So, when my boyfriend, Ben, was transferred to Singapore with his job, I decided to join him.

Can you tell us briefly about your role and its main purpose? I joined international law firm Taylor Vinters in 2014 and am a senior associate in the commercial technology team. I have an exciting and broad role that includes working with technology, media and investment clients operating in Asia Pacific and supporting their commercial, regulatory and legal issues.

My two areas of focus are working with digital media companies operating in the region and connecting the Australian technology and investment ecosystem with its counterparts in Singapore and in the United Kingdom (UK). We believe that there are a number of reasons why Australian companies should be looking at Singapore, and more broadly Asia, for expansion and investment opportunities.

What gives your firm a point of difference? What has made it a success?Taylor Vinters is entrepreneurial and is challenging traditional views of how law firms operate and what dealing with a law firm is like.  We get excited by our clients, how their organisations work and progress and really understand what they want to achieve.  We see ourselves, and our clients see us, as an extension of their own business teams, with a very hands on, practical problem solving approach.

We are also proud to make our own extensive international network of contacts work for our clients. We have helped with funding introductions to trusted professional advisers, supporting with PR and making

Traversing the digital legal ecosystem in Asia

Aemelia Grounds from Taylor Vinters

introductions to other clients where there are synergies and business opportunities.

One example is our Technology Connection event. We have successfully hosted a number of these in Singapore and back in the UK where we have brought members of the investment and technology communities together with government agencies to network, share ideas and thoughts on the industry and explore opportunities in Asia and the UK. We are now looking at hosting a similar event for the Australian and Singapore communities.

What are the biggest challenges facing digital innovation in Singapore? The three biggest challenges are:

Talent. Singapore’s education system is not producing enough ICT professionals to be generating and delivering truly disruptive and game changing technology and there can be challenges for companies importing foreign talent to Singapore.

Maturing the ecosystem. The current Singapore tech ecosystem is heavily reliant on Government grant and equity funding. For it to be a truly sustainable, collaborative and mature ecosystem it needs to be led by entrepreneurs and supported by, as Brad Feld calls them, the feeders (eg. Government, VCs, investors, accountants and lawyers).

Data. There is great potential for Singapore to harness new technologies to enhance its performance in various areas but to do so will require companies and the government to share data, and there is some reluctance at the moment to make that data publically available.

What are the biggest opportunities for the legal industry in Singapore today? The legal industry shouldn’t be just be concentrating on Singapore. It should be thinking regionally and aligning with the Singapore government’s strategic vision to maintain and enhance Singapore’s

well-earned reputation as the ideal platform for accessing the dynamic markets of South East Asia and beyond. By understanding the region, and educating clients on the challenges and opportunities, the legal industry can support and grow together its clients.

Do you have advice for Australians wanting to make the move to Singapore?Singapore is a great place to live and work, but do your homework. Speak to people who are in Singapore and get to understand what the opportunities are. Austrade and the various State Government investment agencies can provide valuable contacts and information.

There have been some recent updates to the Singapore immigration policy, and this could affect some people’s ability to obtain an employment pass to work here. Jump onto the Ministry of Manpower website and have a look at the various requirements and options available.

Get on a plane and come and visit. Get a feel for the place and attend some industry networking events and start to develop those contacts.

What do you think an individual needs in order to be successful in Singapore? It is different for different industries. However, for someone operating in the technology space in Singapore, they need to have a great idea, enthusiasm and patience. They need to be getting out and talking to people, sharing their idea and understanding what the opportunities are. Long term, they need a commitment to the region, supportive investors, and a collaborative team who share their vision.

Do say hello to myself and the team at the next event you attend, the more we learn about you the more we can assist you at the Chamber. I wish you a busy and productive 2015 and hope to see you at an event soon.

It’s been a busy few months at AustCham with many business events and much planning underway for the second half of the calendar year. It was wonderful to see a good mix of new and old members at our Business Connects May, our regular networking event continues to be a sell out for us and we receive great feedback in our post event survey from you.

During May we also hosted a number of smaller targeted events including a new initiative called Breakfast with the Board. Held quarterly, the event is for our newest members to find out more about how the Chamber can help them as well as providing an opportunity for our Board to meet them in a relaxed and intimate setting.

A High Commissioner’s Breakfast was also held in May with Ambassador Chan Heng Chee. She served as Singapore’s ambassador to Washington from 1996 to 2012 and is the current chairman of the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities. We source our invite list for these events from our database, searching for the most relevant members. That’s why it’s important for you to ensure that your membership details are

Finance Report and the accounts were accepted by the quorum. During the meeting Deloitte & Touche were re-appointed as Honorary Auditor for 2015/16 and the election of 10 board members for 2015/16 were confirmed.

Following the official proceedings guests proceeded to the Residence’s lawn to network over canapes and drinks.

When closing, Guy shared that the Chamber has built on its strengths, identified areas for improvement and responded appropriately to turn challenges into opportunities.

“Satisfaction amongst our members is demonstrably very high and we have met or bettered our targets – both tangible and intangible. The coming year will be one of continued growth and development. Our events are second to none, seemingly difficult to improve upon, however I know our team will go many steps beyond” said Scott.

Thank you to our members, board and sponsors who attended the AGM, it’s going to be an exciting year ahead for AustCham in 2015/2016 and we look forward to sharing it with you.

16

We held our 34th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday 11 June 2015 at the Australian High Commissioner’s Residence.

Around 80 members gathered to hear AustCham’s President, Guy Scott report on the Chamber’s progress and achievements for the 2014/2015 year and his introduction to our plans for 2015/2016. Guy remarked: “As President I feel my primary responsibility is to help guide AustCham to become a stronger, more sustainable and more successful business Chamber and I am proud to be able to report that we are succeeding in our quest to be known as the peak international business body in the region.

I am very proud to be associated with AustCham, the brand is undeniably one of the most visible in business networks in Singapore and the quality of the functions and our overall presentation cannot be faulted. The level of professionalism portrayed by the executive team is second to none and we hold a premier standing amongst the other Chambers.”

A new initiative for AustCham in 2015, Breakfast with the Board offers new members the chance to meet with our Board in a relaxed setting. We plan to hold these meetings quarterly and our second breakfast was held at Boomarang Bistro & Bar, Boat Quay on Wednesday 27 May. To introduce this new event to you we asked a board member and new member for their thoughts.

New member, Arv SreedharWhile making my way to “Breakfast with the Board” at the crack of dawn, I didn’t quite know what to expect. However, what I also didn’t expect was that since moving to Singapore five months ago and taking up membership, my wife and I would get to know so many people – both personally and professionally – in such a short period of time thanks to AustCham’s numerous, colourful events.

As the managing director and head of APAC for a boutique debt capital markets advisory house (Altitude), we originate public and private debt transactions for companies, and also represents Switzerland’s largest domestic bank, Raiffeisen Switzerland, in the region. My wife CJ does something far more exciting, and is a developmental psychologist

Breakfast with the Board

specialising in children with autism. We have found that AustCham has been a great way for two people from two very different professions to both develop new business networks in Singapore, as well as keep connected to Australia.

The breakfast itself was a slightly more intimate way to get to know the Board, as well as other members, and to hear in more detail what AustCham does and how it can help us and our businesses in Singapore. From a networking perspective, it allowed members to have robust conversations and be introduced to potential clients, partners, or simply new friends in a casual yet professional atmosphere. It was quite refreshing that the Chamber promotes a very collegiate culture between and amongst its executive and its members.

Board member, Christopher ReesI’m the senior trade commissioner in Singapore for Austrade, an Australian government agency established to help Australians win business overseas and attract investment to Australia.

(L-R) Christopher Rees and Arv Sreedhar

(L-R) Fabia Palmer, Kerry-Anne Walsh and Belinda Braggs

(L-R) Chris Wanden, Lucas Stewart and Kate Ryan

I’ve been on the board of AustCham for two and a half years, ever since my arrival in Singapore from Japan.

Breakfast with the Board was a fascinating opportunity to see the diversity of interests among the Chamber’s new members. Some were new arrivals working for iconic Australian firms, some were running businesses here for Australian and Singaporean interests, some had been here for years and had sought the networking AustCham can offer and one was a Brit, working for a British firm, for whom Australia and Australians were a key market. But all were enthusiastic, experienced and both keen to learn and keen to contribute. It was very encouraging to meet them all.

In attending I think the benefits to new members are two-fold. First, they get the opportunity to hear from the board members about AustCham – its purpose, its activities, its capabilities and how it can help their business. Second, they meet other new members in a fairly quiet yet energised environment, and can start an important process of networking and relationship building at the breakfast. I was struck by how easily the new members started conversing with each other, exchanging cards and clearly getting significant value from those interactions.

Aussie artists take to Singapore’s streets

‘50 Bridges’ is the Australian High Commission’s arts and community engagement programme that celebrates Singapore’s Golden Jubilee, as well as 50 years of diplomatic relations between the Republic and Australia.

Giant feet, eye balls and other human body parts caused a stir in Singapore during May, popping up at MRT stations and hawker centres throughout the island – courtesy of Melbourne’s Polygot Theatre’s Snuff Puppets.

Australian street artists also collaborated with local artists to paint on 50 walls located across Singapore and in 50 Performances, two Aussie theatre companies put on puppet shows within the heartlands.

’50 Bridges’ will culminate in 50 BBQs on the last weekend of June, they will be firing up simultaneously across the island on Sunday 28 June. Visit sg50oz.sg to check out the street art mural locations.
