The student and one parent must have a FSA ID to sign the FAFSA. For financial aid for 2019-20, use 2017 tax information.

Scholarships are gifts of money that do not require repayment. Scholarships usually recognize special achievements in academics, talent, and leadership. Some scholarships may also require that students demonstrate financial need. Financial need will be determined by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). www.fafsa.ed.gov

Scholarship Tips

Before you start any scholarship applications, it’s important to know basic information about the scholarships you are applying for. Common requirements for many (not all) scholarships include: a completed Application, Letters of Recommendation, Essay (s), a copy of your Transcript, and your GPA and SAT/ACT scores.

Local Scholarships

Mrs. Chavis-Johnson will begin receiving applications for local scholarships in the Spring (February/March). As she receives the applications and deadline information, she will promote the available scholarship in her monthly “Scholarship Packets”, which you will be able to pick up from College Central. You will read through the packet to identify the scholarships that you are eligible to apply for and then, upon your request, she will provide the application for each requested scholarship.

There are many legitimate scholarship resources available for students and families. Unfortunately, there are also numerous scholarship scams. We encourage all students and parents to learn more from the Federal Trade Commission about common scholarship scams. By becoming aware of the strategies and techniques used, you can learn how to protect yourself and identify potential pitfalls during your scholarship search.

Laurinburg Masonic Lodge #305 A.F. & A.M. will be awarding 2 scholarships to students in Scotland County this year. To qualify, a student must have a minimum GPA of at least 2.5, be planning to attend a 2 or 4 year college, and have financial need. Charles E. Cathey Masonic Scholarship

Deadline: March 15, 2019 Award Amount: $1,000

The Grand Lodge of Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of NC offers eight $1,000 scholarships to college bound students based on scholastic achievement, extracurricular activities, and community involvement. Awarded to graduating seniors in Scotland County/SHS who are planning to pursue a degree in education. MICHAEL A. DEMAYO SCHOLARSHIP

· Be a high school senior

· Reside and attend high school in counties served by the Law Offices of Michael A. DeMayo LLP including Alexander, Anson, Burke, Cabarrus, Caldwell, Catawba, Cleveland, Cumberland, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Richmond, Robeson, Rowan, Scotland, Stanly and Union.

Carolina Skin Care offers scholarships to a Scotland County Schools student seeking a career in the Health Field. Must have at least a 3.0 GPA and plan to pursue some health related course of study as well as demonstrated high academics and leadership abilities. 2019 SANDHILLS PRIDE SCHOLARSHIP

Deadline: March 31, 2019Award Amount: $2,500

· Resident of the Sandhills region

· Identify as a gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, gender queer student, or as a straight ally, who has demonstrated advocacy for equality and support of the LGBTQ community

· Accepted by a 4-year college, a 1-2 year community college or a vocational school for 2019.

· Be the child of a North Carolina law enforcement officer who was killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty.

· Be enrolled or accepted for admission in a college, vocational training school or other educational institution approved by the scholarship committee of the Young Lawyers Division of the NC Bar Association.

WINSTON-SALEM FOUNDATION

The Foundation offers many scholarships utilizing a one-stop application process. Filling out one application will check your eligibility for multiple scholarships including both need and merit based awards.

SCOTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL Of REALTORS SCHOLARSHIP

Deadline: April 1, 2019 Award Amount: $1,000

The Scotland County Council of Realtors will be awarding scholarships to high school seniors who reside in Scotland County and who will be attending a two or four year college after graduation. Applicants must have an unweighted GPA of 2.5 or above and have evidence (signed documentation) of at least 25 hours of community service, community activity and/or church related activities. Applications are available in College Central and must be mailed to the donor by the deadline.

Johnsie Patterson McFadden/Montpelier Presbyterian Church of Wagram Scholarship

Deadline: April 1, 2019 Award Amount: Varies

Founded in 2007 by the generosity of Johnsie Patterson McFadden and awarded to Scotland County students who exemplify a spirit of community service and/or church related activities. Qualifications: unweighted GPA of at least 2.5; must have evidence (signed documentation) of at least 25 hours of community service, community activity, and/or church related activities; must have participated (or attempted) in a school sport and/or extracurricular activities. Applications are available in College Central and must be mailed to the donor by the deadline.

Catharine Campbell and Daniel White Memorial Scholarship

Deadline: April 1, 2019

The Catharine Campbell & Daniel White Memorial Scholarship was established to provide scholarships for Scotland High School students who wish to attend a public institution of higher learning or a community college. The scholarship desires to recognize a deserving student who demonstrates the potential, ability and motivation to succeed but needs financial assistance in order to attend college. Laurinburg Rotary Club Scholarships

Deadline: April 4, 2019

The Laurinburg Rotary Club is offering three (3) scholarships to seniors who demonstrate excellence in academics, have been active in community and extracurricular activities, and have been accepted to a two-year or four-year college or university. Student must have at least a 2.5 UW GPA and must be planning to attend a 2 or 4-year college. The scholarships are as follows:

•The James L. Morgan Scholarship. This scholarship shall be awarded to a senior student attending a four year institution who exemplifies the motto of Rotary: Service Above Self.

•The Carl Clayton Scholarship. This scholarship shall be awarded to a senior student attending a four year institution, who is able to demonstrate financial need.

•The W. R. Sutherland Scholarship. This scholarship shall be awarded to a senior student who plans to attend Richmond Community College in pursuit of a two-year or four-year degree.

The Rotary Club Scholarships application is available in College Central and should be returned to Mrs. Chavis-Johnson by the deadline.

James H. Underwood Jr. Scholarship

Deadline: April 5, 2019 Award Amount: $500-$1,000

· African- American high school

· Attending Historically Black College or University (HBCU) or

• Majoring in field of Primary, Secondary, or Post-Secondary Education

· Interested students should exemplify active community involvement.

There are two (2) parts to the application process:

1. You must complete the application and upload your essay and resume online at www.jhujscholar.weebly.com

2. You must mail in the additional required materials by the deadline. (Official transcript and 2 letters of recommendation).

WILLIAM VATAVUK SCHOLARSHIP

Deadline: April 6, 2019Award Amount: $800

The William Vatavuk Scholarship will be awarded to a deserving high school senior who currently attends an accredited North Carolina high school and plans on attending a two- or four-year college or university. Students must be a high school senior who has a minimum 3.0 GPA. Three written essays of 400-600 words each are also required; essay prompts can be found on the scholarship application. www.scholarships.com

PETER S. SLOMIANYJ SCHOLARSHIP FUND

· Student or parent has worked at Subway during the past 12 months.

NORTH CAROLINA CRIMINAL JUSTICE FELLOWS PROGRAM

· Must be a legal resident of North Carolina and a high school graduate or current high school senior

· ;Live in an eligible county at the time of application and demonstrate the intent to be employed as a criminal justice professional in an eligible county (Scotland County is an eligible county).

A.B. Gibson Scholarship Fund Award

Presented annually to a graduating senior at Scotland High School who is qualified in accordance with the following criteria: fineness of spirit; integrity and determination; creative qualities of mind; sufficient success in school to indicate future success in continuation of education; and financial need. GOLDEN LEAF SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM FOR NORTH CAROLINA COMMUNITY COLLEGES

North Carolina Hospitality Education Foundation (NC HEF), awards a wide variety of scholarships to students, as well as vital grant funding to educators, across the state of North Carolina. TEACHER EDUCATION ASSISTNACE FOR COLLEGE AND HIGHER EDUCATION (TEACH) GRANT PROGRAM

Deadline: Varies by institution Award Amount: up to $16, 000

· Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.

· Be enrolled as an undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, or graduate student in a postsecondary educational institution that has chosen to participate in the TEACH Grant Program.

· Minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.25

· Sign a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve and Promise to Pay:

. Serve as a full-time teacher for at least four years within eight years of completing the course of study

. Teach math, science, a foreign language, bilingual education, special education, or a subject designated as "high need" by the federal or state government, or local education agency and approved by the Department, or serve as a reading specialist.

Many colleges and universities offer their own scholarships to incoming freshman. These scholarships are general in nature and are made based on information received through the Admissions process or via information supplied to the Office of Financial Aid. For NC A&T’s full ride scholarships, applications will be available online beginning November 1st. Deadline to apply is January 15th. · Chancellor’s Leadership Scholarship – Program for students with demonstrated leadership potential, academic achievement, personal talents, unique work or services experience, financial need and a demonstration of overcoming personal adversity. A preference will be given to those individuals who will enhance and contribute to NC State’s diversity. Students who apply for admission by October 15, 2018 and submit a FAFSA by March 1, 2019 are automatically considered. No separate application is required.

· UNCG Blue & Gold Scholarships: recognizes and encourages exceptional academic ability and talent. Approximately thirty renewable scholarships (ranging from $1,500 to full tuition, fees, room and board) are offered annually to entering freshmen. Blue & Gold Scholarship recipients are chosen primarily on the basis of superior scholastic and personal achievement and potential. Successful candidates generally present a minimum SAT score of 1200 (critical reading and math) or an ACT score of 27, and a minimum high school GPA of 3.5. (No separate scholarship application).

· UNCG Guarantee: a selective scholarship program for high-achieving, low-income students who plan to attend UNCG and are residents of NC. Application available soon at https://guarantee.uncg.edu/apply-for-guarantee

· UNCG Teacher Education Fellows: Participation in the UNCG Teacher Education Fellows Program includes scholarships of up to $20,000.00. Scholarship funds for tuition are distributed incrementally, with $3,500.00 distributed in the first year, $4,500.00 distributed in the second year, and $6,000.00 distributed in each of the last two years, as long as eligibility requirements are maintained. Eligible students: NC residence majoring in Elementary, Middle Grades, High School, or Special Education. Weighted GPA 3.80, SAT score: 1100 or ACT score: 24
