As you study and train for the ACCA Qualication, there arelots of qualications you can achieve along the way as yourogress towards ACCA membershi. Please note the above pathways are generally available to graduates from non-accounting

disciplines. If you are a graduate with a relevant accredited bachelor or postgraduate

degree you will be eligible to claim exemption for up to nine ACCA exams and therefore

will not be eligible to achieve these awards, unless you forfeit exemptions awarded.

From an early age Ihad a dream to seethe world. When I rsttravelled abroad, toLondon, I realised thatmy ultimate aspirationwas to experienceother cultures from

the inside out, saysElena Andrews FCCA.

Growing up in Moscow, Russia, Ichose a career in audit. It offeredunparalleled opportunitiesfor international mobility andI never looked back.

Elena graduated with a mastersdegree in economics and joined theMoscow ofce of Arthur Andersen asan analyst in assurance and business

advisory services. Two years later,as an audit senior, I was successfulin securing an offer for a transfer toAndersens New York ofce. Elenas time in New York was followedby time in Auckland as an assuranceservices specialist. Elena spent

seven years working in audit withDeloitte, followed by a senior rolewith TOWER group an insurance,investment and wealth managementprovider as nancial controller.

In 2011 the travel bug struck Elenaagain and she moved to Sydney,Australia. Shortly after moving toSydney an opportunity to join VirginMoney Australia came along, where

Elena has taken up the post ofnancial controller. This has takenher one step nearer to achieving herultimate career goal to lead a largesuccessful business. Its becomingmore common now that the path tochief executive ofcer lies via nance.

ACCA gave me a chance to travelthe world, and provided me witha unique edge when it comes tocompeting for senior management

roles. As a professional accountantwith diverse and extensiveexperience you are in demand nomatter where you want to go.

In January 2011 I was appointedas a member of the Committee ofProfessional Accountants in Businessfor the International Federation ofAccountants. Its a great honourand a big responsibility. Im thrilledto be able to work with otherlike-minded professionals fromaround the world and to share my

Elena remembers when she receivedthe letter that conrmed she couldput the letters ACCA after hername. It gave me a great senseof achievement and reward.

Firm foundations


Having completed hisaccounting degree inthe UK in 2004, OliverSmith decided to moveto New Zealand withhis partner and theintention of completinga six-month working

holiday. However, theyboth fell in love withthe country and soonfound themselvesquickly applying forresidency and jobs.

After a couple of temporary rolesin various accounting functions Ifound myself working as assistantaccountant at ACB, a reasonably

large chain of backpackers withoperations throughout New Zealand,explains Oliver. After working therefor a year I moved to an analystrole at Telecom New Zealand. Theindustry is so fast paced that I foundit a fantastic place to complete myACCA Qualication, whilst also beingable to try out a good variety ofdifferent roles with varying degreesof requirements around nance.

Oliver chose to study for the ACCAQualication above other professional

accountancy qualications becauseit offered the greatest exibilityfor me to choose how and when Istudied and which exams I took.Also, although I plan to stay in NewZealand for a good while longeryet, there is always a chance I willend up moving to Australia or backto the UK. Having my qualicationrecognised in these countries willmake the transition much easier.

Studying for the ACCA Qualicationwasnt without its challenges for Oliver.

At the time I was taking my exams,there wasnt really an establishedstudent network in New Zealand or

places to go and study. So I reliedon self study to prepare for theexams. I do prefer this method ofstudy anyway, so it wasnt a majorhurdle for me, but I was still relievedwhen I passed my nal exams. Itwas hard work but worth it. I wasin the UK at the time and out withfriends so we celebrated in stylewith a bottle of champagne!

Oliver has worked for Telecom NewZealand in various roles since 2006

and is now senior portfolio strategymanager. In this role he is responsiblefor guiding the senior managementof Telecom in developing andimplementing the long term businessstrategy. Helping decide whatproducts to sell, what technologiesto build, what the competition lookslike, how the political environmentwill play out is all in a days work forOliver. It requires a combination ofan analytical mindset to understandthe dynamics of the industry, witha high level of critical thinking.

Although I have moved away fromnance into a more strategic role,I have always found having theACCA Qualication and a goodunderstanding of nance has givenme a really strong grounding in everyrole I do. I suspect ultimately I mayhave found myself in a similar role towhere I am now, but I think without theACCA Qualication I would denitelybe a few years behind in terms ofseniority, salary and inuence.

Oliver has the following advice foranyone starting out as a traineeaccountant. Dont think that anaccounting qualication pigeonholesyou into an accounting role in thelong term. Todays accountants areincredibly versatile and can easily moveinto any other business discipline suchas strategy or marketing. Just look atme as an example.The ACCA Qualication has given memore credibility and greater condencewhen talking about nancial matters.

It has also opened up other doors thatwould normally require an MBA orsimilar qualication.

I was working atKPMG Tanzania whenI completed my ACCAexams. I wanted togive something backso I tutored ve ACCAstudents through toqualication. All of

them now work for theBig Four. A highlightfor me was that I alsomet my wife in theprocess, says HusseinHussein FCCA.

Two-and-a-half years into his careerat KPMG Tanzania, Hussein wasapproached by Standard CharteredBank. He joined as head of internal

audit. I loved the job, but theculture didnt suit me, explainsHussein. I wanted to move backinto accounting, so in 2003 I movedto KPMG Dubai to specialise inbanking audit and advisory. He wasin charge of Citibank, HSBC andStandard Chartered Bank audits andgained a lot of valuable experience.

I moved to Melbourne in 2005 andjoined Deloitte, says Hussein. Hespecialised in nancial instrument

advisory and two years later wasgiven the opportunity to start up asimilar service offering in Sydney.It was a huge success and led tome being admitted to Deloittepartnership in 2009. Along withtutoring back in Tanzania, setting upthe nancial instruments advisoryservices in Sydney are the proudestachievements of my career to date.I started the team alone in 2007and now its a team of 14 highlyskilled young professionals.

A typical day at work for Husseinstarts at 7am. Between 9 and 5.30pmhe has back-to-back meetings.

They typically involve discussingsolutions for clients with my team,providing client service and stafftraining, and also focusing on newproduct innovation and followingup on new leads. At 5.30, I reviewwork and client reports for a coupleof hours before heading home.

Hussein studied his ACCAQualication at a college in Nairobi,Kenya. I relied a lot on ACCA

approved books, revision kits, andACCAs student magazine andwebsite. I passed all my papers atthe rst attempt by focusing on thecontent of the syllabuses. I didntwork while studying until the nalthree papers, even though thiswould have put my studies intocontext and would have enabledme to achieve membership sooner.But I enjoyed every minute.

I put my exam success downto thorough preparation. One

month before each exam session,I focused on only the revision kitsand practised past exam papersfrom the previous ve years twice and then did mock exams.

If youre considering a career innance and accounting, I can assureyou that you wont regret it itsa fantastic career choice and theACCA syllabus prepares you to workin any industry or sector, and it hasworldwide recognition. My advice is

to select a career which you have apassion for. Qualifying is tough, butthats only a reection of the qualit y.But the exams are fair. And passingis not a game of chance if you studyhard. So make it all worthwhile byachieving the career of your dreams.

ACCA is the only qualication Ihave. Ive used it at every stageof my career and it was easy toget a job in any country that Ivelived in. Ten years from now I hopeto be a senior technical partner
