The effects of fatigue can be minimised by: 8 hours sleep every night drinking plenty of water throughout the day taking regular breaks If you are feeling tired or fatigued, talk to the boss or someone you can talk to at work. This will highlight whatever is causing the problem and also in managing things so that the work / life balance is improved. Happy New Year to everyone.
It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through February 2016. I trusteveryone had an enjoyable and relaxing break over the Christmas and New Yearperiod. It was a much needed break for our Members to recharge their batteriesafter a very hectic and challenging year. If you are like me, the break now seems
like a distant memory. So far it has been a great start to the new year and it looks like it will be anotherbusy one. Prenail manufacturers lead times have crept out since Christmas and this is a sure sign that thefirst six months at least are going to be very very busy.
We have a few challenges ahead of us this year. Securing and maintaining a consistent workflow will beone of the challenges along with creating flexibility within your businesses to enable to adapt to a marketthat will potentially swing later in the year. Another challenge will be the revised Health and Safety at WorkAct that comes into force on 4 April 2016. It is very important that you make yourself familiar with thechanges and your responsibilities and that you are prepared for the 4th of April. If you currently have acomprehensive Health and Safety system then the changes will be minimal. If you don't then you really doneed to ensure that you give this priority. A very good first port of call is the Canterbury Rebuild SafetyCharter. This is a very low cost organisation (free for companies with 10 or less employees) and they havea huge amount of resource and material for their Members. The Master Builders is also here to help anyMembers who may have any questions regarding responsibilities under the revised act.
The House of the Year entries are open and they close on Monday 29th February 2016. The interest in thecompetition this year is looking very positive. If you haven't considered entering I recommend youreconsider. Many of our Members have built strong businesses on the back of being successful in thiscompetition. The House of the Year event has been booked for Friday 29th July 2016. This will be anotherfantastic evening so please ensure you put this in your diary.
The National Conference has been confirmed as being held in Christchurch, but the date has been delayeduntil 2123 September 2016. The Board and David Kelly have been rethinking the format of theConference, detail which will be sent out very soon. The Executive really want to make this Conference asuccess and we hope a lot of our Members attend to make it the biggest conference attendance for sometime.
The beer of the month is a surprising DB Export, yes you heard it correct. I hadn't touched DB Export for atleast fifteen years and I reluctantly let it past my lips when a friend brought it around for a BBQ. It was anincredibly hot day and the beer was extremely cold and it took me back to days of hay carting or having abeer straight after a hard fought rugby match. Now I just need to find a bottle of Wards.

I am writing this in a bit of a rush as am very late getting my blurb in this monthand have just had 'the' call from Paula so here goes!
We are hearing reports of some of our members being extremely busy and somewho are struggling. This is concerning and if anyone is having trouble either wayplease do not hesitate to contact Ian, Stacey or one of the Executive committee.
There may be someone who can share the load. You may have read (I hope you have) the emails Staceyand Paula have been sending where a few members have asked for loan staff to assist in short term jobs .We hope this has been of some assistance. It's great if some of you can support our fellow members andmake Masterbuilder stronger in Ashburton.
Michael Wong has updated me with current consent info and Ashburton has had a quieter start to the yearwith 61 consents so far comparted to 67 last year and dollar value down $4million. There are quite a fewcommercial consents coming through and the council currently have 22 houses in processing so definitelynot all doom and gloom but with the dairy dollar staying down there is a definite slow down on building.
Yesterday I attended the House of the Year Committee meeting in Timaru where myself and the committeewere very excited to find we have a very positive start to entry numbers for this year. It's in Ashburton on15TH JULY so put it in your calendar and keep an eye out for ticket sales email coming soon. For those ofyou with entries to go in please remember Stacey and Paula are happy to enter them for you or assistwhere required. If you are a first time entrant it can be a little daunting so use their expert skills!!! Thecommittee meeting was followed by an information night where Paul Williams (long standing and veryrespected House of the year judge) and Bev McKay from Master Builders spoke about tips and processesaround entering. Paul gave us some very valuable pointers on how to do well pointing out what they look atand how to detail areas on your entries if it is not visible to the eye. For those that attended it was anextremely informative night. I was personally really disappointed that I was the only attendee fromAshburton. Having the likes of Paul who runs his own business, give up his time to help our entrants out isextremely valuable and it was such a shame that you all missed out on his expert advice. Well done toTimaru for a good turnout! We hope to be able to run a similar night again next year so please let myself orStacey know if you would be interested.
Cricket match is all on Canterbury Masterbuilders versus Ashburton Master builders at the domainThursday 3rd March!! We have a team but would love a couple of spares. Also would be great to havesome spectators There will be refreshments provided.

Asbestos rules change 4 April
A new set of regulations governing all work involving asbestoswill come in on 4 April 2016.
The new regulations will help to protect workers fromasbestos exposure which is good news for the constructionindustry as construction workers currently make up threequarters of those with asbestosrelated diseases.
A number of changes are coming, including the introduction ofa new asbestos removal licensing system.
Please note that the asbestos regulations form part of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and are stillto be finalised by Cabinet.

Response hasbeen great and it's been fantastic to see a lot of both new members and firsttime entrants coming along.
Andrea Lee, Fowler Homes Ashburton commented "I found the House of Year Heads Up session reallyuseful. I found clarification on some of the points that 'do or don't' affect judging criteria extremelybeneficial. I'd recommend everyone considering entering House of Year to attend".

Spam email warning Spam email attacks are growing ever more sophisticated and harder to spot.
A reminder that when you receive email from someone new, which looks suspicious, think twice beforeopening it or, in particular clicking any links. The link could lead to your computer becoming infected with avirus. Also, always ensure you have virus software installed and kept uptodate regularly.
Here are some things to look out for:
The 'from' email address may look strange,The phone number might be fake,The written english may be unusual,and, if they are asking you to click a link and you're unsure always err on the side of caution anddon't.
Where you have a phone number, it may pay to call them and confirm who they are and what they aresending.
We have recently had some more sophisticated spam attacks come via the Master Builders referrals Find aBuilder tool too and are looking at increased security measures here.

Changes to Individual Members fees RMBA has changed its fees structure for staff of business members to zero. The categories that areaffected are Apprentice, Student, Individual and Professional.
This is because we'd like to encourage all our business members to include their staff in RMBA events,training and communications. Effectively staff members no longer need their own membership as they willbe members by association through their employers.
For 2016 fees we have discounted to $0 (no fee) those people who fall into those individual categoriesAND WHO work for our current members. For those individuals who do not work for our members, the feesremain at the current levels.
