This first course in managerial accounting introduces students to the use of accounting information for internal management decision-making. The internal user focus is a notable contrast to the emphasis in financial accounting of reporting the results of a company’s operations to external users. The course is designed from the perspective of the general manager, and its primary purpose is to develop the ability to use rather than to prepare accounting information.

Specifically, this course should help you to

Apply basic cost concepts to develop costing systems that will determine the cost of a company’s products or services. Accurate cost data is an essential prerequisite for proper managerial decision-making.

Apply management accounting concepts and techniques in order to make wise choices between competing alternatives. This requires the ability to extract relevant information from accounting records, reports or statements, and to properly use this information.

Explain management control systems and utilize these concepts in evaluating the performance of managers, products, or economic units.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The course will also address the following learning goals:

Ethics: students will be exposed to ethical situations in assigned homework questions and classroom discussions

Communications: students will be encouraged to participate in classroom discussions and will be evaluated on written communication on examination papers.

Quantitative methods: students will develop skills in basic quantitative analyses in assignment homework questions and classroom activities

Critical thinking: students will be expected to determine which decision analyses are required in various situations, the underlying assumptions and limitations of the analyses, and what additional information should be considered.

COURSE FORMAT The course is asynchronous and is meant to be taken online at your own pace. The majority of the material for this course has been posted on UMLearn and is available for you from the start of the course. Guidelines have been given to you on how to approach the course, but you are responsible for the self-management of covering the material. COURSE MATERIALS

Do not throw away the Connect access code card included in the 11th CE that comes with your new textbook. You need it to access the Connect site for assignments, e-book videos, and other resources. 4) There are some Zoom webconference calls that you may find helpful. These would require that you have access to the Zoom application, and the ability to listen in and participate if you so choose. Letter Grades Of all the students who get 50% or over in the course:

To protect the academic integrity of education at the Asper School, certain protocols will be observed for online exams. For instance, in some courses, the online exam will set up such that each student will get a random subset of questions from a larger question bank, which means no two students will get exactly the same exam. Further, a very small number of questions will appear on a screen and you may not have the option to move back to questions you have already answered. The instructor may require your camera be on and directed at you for the entire duration of the exam. For exams, we may be using university-approved Respondus Monitor or other online proctoring tools, which will require you to have your camera and microphone on for the entire duration of the exam. As the software detects any unusual movements, please sit in a location where there are no people/pets or other moving objects in the camera’s view during the exam. For quizzes/exams, which will be administered via the Respondus Browser and Monitor, you will need a device (computer or iPad; smartphone will not work) with one of the following operating systems:

Windows 10, 8, or 7 (note: will not work with Windows 10S)

Mac OS 10.15 to 10.12, OS X 10.11, or OSX 10.10

iOS: 11.0+ (iPad only)

You will need the Chrome browser. Other browsers such as Safari may not work.

ABC and Budget Group Excel Assignments: Both assignments are to be done in groups using Excel functions and templates provided. Save your final team work in the Excel Workbook before submitting in the Dropbox on UM Learn course website. Late, individual, or in-person paper-based submissions will not be accepted. Marks will be lost for not using the Excel functions or format. Near the end of term, a peer evaluation form will be provided for students who wish to fill out. Individual score of each assignment will be adjusted accordingly to compute the end-of-term course grade. Groups will be assigned by the instructor when the registration revision period is over. It is suggested that you make a copy of your answer to check against the answer key. For both assignments, the credit is based on having certain check figures correct.

Mandatory Connect Assignments for the 11th CE : There are 6 assignments, but we will take the best 5 assignments in calculating your performance. You will receive full credit of 2% on each assignment when you score 100%. When scoring less than 100% on a Connect assignment, weighted credit is calculated according to your actual score on the assignment. Be advised that you MUST hit “SUBMIT” to submit the

Examinations: Students are allowed to use one 8.5-inch by 11-inch sheet, handwritten on both sides, for the midterm and the final examination. The exams are closed book and no other extraneous information should be used during the online exams. The exams will be hosted online and may require a proctoring application (video and speaker enabled).

End of chapter self-study questions: The Connect assignments are NOT sufficient preparation for this course. This course outline includes a list of self-study questions that should to be done at the end of each chapter. These questions are designed to allow students to review lecture material and to practice applying knowledge of each subject area. Reviewing the assigned Connect e-book video(s) before attempting the self-study questions will be helpful. Solutions of after-chapter problems are provided in the UM Learn course site. Students may benefit from working on questions with a study partner or in a small group. This will help ensure completeness of your individual responses. Questions will not be handed in for grading. It is each student’s responsibility to check their own responses against solutions in detail and to identify areas where improvement is necessary. Any persistent difficulties should be discussed with the instructor during office hours or by email.

MISSED EXAM AND LATE SUBMISSION POLICY

Students who miss the midterm examination for legitimate reasons should inform instructor within 48 hours of the date of the midterm examination to have the weight of the midterm examination added to the final examination (i.e., will write a 80% final examination). Students who are unable to meet a course requirement due to medical circumstances are currently not required to submit medical notes. However, students are required to contact their instructor (for assignments and midterm examination) or academic advisor (for final examination) by email within 48 hours of the date of the course requirement to inform of the missed work and to make arrangements.

Do not make travel plans before the Final Exam. I cannot let you take the exam earlier/later because you booked a flight ticket for a date earlier than the final exam. In the event you have to miss the Final Exam for a valid reason, a request for a deferred exam must be made at your home Faculty’s Undergraduate Program Office ([email protected], if you are an Asper student). Applying for a deferred exam does not guarantee your request will be granted. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY It is critical to the reputation of the Asper School of Business and of our degrees that everyone associated with our faculty behave with the highest academic integrity. As the faculty that helps create business and government leaders, we have a special obligation to ensure that our ethical standards are beyond reproach. Any dishonesty in our academic transactions violates this trust. The University of Manitoba General Calendar addresses the issue of academic dishonesty under the heading “Plagiarism and Cheating.” Specifically, acts of academic dishonesty include, but are not limited to:

using the exact words of a published or unpublished author without quotation marks and without referencing the source of these words

duplicating a table, graph or diagram, in whole or in part, without referencing the source paraphrasing the conceptual framework, research design, interpretation, or any other ideas of

another person, whether written or verbal (e.g., personal communications, ideas from a verbal presentation) without referencing the source

copying the answers of another student in any test, examination, or take-home assignment providing answers to another student in any test, examination, or take-home assignment taking any unauthorized materials into an examination or term test (crib notes) impersonating another student or allowing another person to impersonate oneself for the purpose

of submitting academic work or writing any test or examination stealing or mutilating library materials accessing test prior to the time and date of the sitting changing name or answer(s) on a test after that test has been graded and returned submitting the same paper or portions thereof for more than one assignment, without discussions

with the instructors involved Group Projects and Group Work

Many courses in the Asper School of Business require group projects. Students should be aware that group projects are subject to the same rules regarding academic integrity. All group members should exercise special care to ensure that the group project does not violate the policy on Academic Integrity. Should a violation occur, group members are jointly accountable unless the violation can be attributed to specific individuals. Some courses, while not requiring group projects, encourage students to work together in groups before submitting individual assignments. If it’s unclear whether it is allowed, students are encouraged to seek clarification from the instructor to avoid violating the academic integrity policy. In the Asper School of Business, all suspected cases of academic dishonesty in undergraduate courses are reported to the Dean's office and follow the approved disciplinary process. If the student is from another Faculty and the academic dishonesty is committed in an Asper course, the student’s Faculty could match or add penalties beyond the Asper School’s. F-DISC on transcript indicates the F is for disciplinary reasons.
