Sir Stanley was an Honorary Member ofthe Academy of Medicine.

The 1st Congress of Medicine washeld at the Pathology LectureTheatre in the grounds of theSingapore General Hospital from3-5 May 1963. The President ofthe 1st Congress was Sir GordonRansome. The Congress wasdeclared open by Dr KShanmugaratnam, Dean of theFaculty of Medicine, University ofMalaya in Singapore.

The 2nd Congress of Medicine was held in the Pathology Lecture Theatre underthe Presidency of Dr H M McGladdery, formerly Senior Surgeon at SingaporeGeneral Hospital and then later at Lady Templar Hospital in Kuala Lumpur,Malaya. The Congress was held from 28-29 August 1965. It was declaredopen by Mr Reginald Quah, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, University of Singapore.

ARMORIAL BEARINGSThe Armorial Bearings of the Academy of Medicine weredesigned by the Pursuivant of Arms at the College of Arms,London and were granted by the Sovereign’s Kings of Arms(Garter, Clarenceux and Norroy and Ulster) on 20 June 1962.

The Coat of Arms is as follows: “Per pale and per chevronGules and Azure a Chevron cotised between three Leopards'faces Or And for the Crest On a Wreath, Or, Gules and AzureTwo Eagles’ heads addorsed Azure beaked Or and gorgedwith a chaplet of Roses - Gules barbed and seeded in eachbeak a Poppy slipped and leaved proper”.

In the centre of the Shield, the Chevron symbolises thecoming-together of the Specialties of Medicine under oneroof - the Academy. The three Pards represent the territoriesin the Singapore-Malaysia region. The two Eagles’ heads ofthe Crest remind us of the privilege we had of using thefamily Arms of our first Master, Gordon Ransome, in theearly years of our existence. The Poppies denote our commondesire to relieve pain. The Motto RECTA SAPERE urges usto seek and savour the truth at all times.

Lord Brain, Past President ofthe Royal College of Physiciansof London, was an HonoraryMember of the Academy. Hegave the Academy invaluableadvice and encouragement inits early years.

The Academy inaugurated the Tan Sri Runme ShawLecture in conjunction with the Silver Jubilee of theAcademy. This lectureship is set up to promote theadvancement of medicine on an international basis. It isopen to distinguished members of the medical professionon subjects related to medicine or medical science. TheFirst Runme Shaw Lecturer was Dr John Baxter, Professorof Medicine and Professor of Biochemistry, University ofCalifornia, United States of America.

At the Biennial Banquet of the Academies of Medicine, Singaporeand Malaysia on 6 August 1988, the Royal College of PhysiciansEdinburgh was presented with a scroll carrying signatures ofGuest-of-Honour Mr Goh Chok Tong and all those who hadattended the Opening Ceremony two days earlier. Picture showsPresident M Oliver obviously delighted with the simple gift.
