Academy L’amourChapter one – part one The academyMaaike

‘I’m not going okay!’ I yelled, at the same time trying to get upstairsbefore they could get me back. My father came after me.When I entered my room, everything, except my bed and desk, were gone.My desk was clean, when I opened the wardrobe it was empty. My dadcame into the room. I couldn’t lock it anymore, cause they removed it lastweek.‘You’re stuff are already packed, we’d expected that you didn’t want togo.’ Behind my father I saw my mother crying. A part of me wanted to giveher a big hug, but right now I hated both of them.I heard a claxon. ‘The taxi’s here.’ Was all my father said. And he wentdownstairs.I didn’t say anything when my dad almost pushed me in the car. He closedthe door and gave the driver a note. Probably the address.

--

I didn’t know how long the ride to the academy toke. Mostly I stared out of the window, figuring out how I could escape, and get my way back. Ilooked at all the road boards, printing the city-names in my memory.Sometimes it was helpful to have a photographic memory. Te driver looked at me once in a while, and I stared back furious.

Right now I was on my way to Amphitrite. An academy with a stupid namewitch I think no one knows how to say it.I still didn’t know why they send me to that place. I didn’t do anythingwrong right? I’d go to school, got home, made my homework, ate, took ashower and got to bed. That’s probably my life in a nutshell. I didn’t go outmuch. Mostly you’d go out with friends, and there the problem was. Ididn’t have any friends.

--

We drove to a small village. Well, a dusty road. Then the taxi stopped and

the man looked at me.‘This is as far as I go. Otherwise I won’t be able to turn. You’ll be alright.Right?’I smiled at the man. He looked nice. There was no reason to be mad athim, he only did his job. ‘I’ll be fine, thanks.’ The man gave me anenvelope with my name on it. ‘You’re mother told me to give it to you.Uhm, good luck I suppose.’ I got out of the taxi. The man waved, -sort of-and I gave him a sad smile.Great, here I am. Then I remembered something. ‘Wait!’ I yelled at thetaxi, ‘where are my bags?’ but he couldn’t possibly hear me anymore, hewas too far. ‘Fuck’ I mumbled. I looked around again. It was a beautifullittle village though. But I suppose this wasn’t the academy. I looked

‘Everything, I, Uhm,’ I sighed, should I tell him that my parents droppedme here? I hardly knew him. ‘What the heck’ I said in myself.‘I don’t know anything about this place, Uhm, my parents kind of, droppedme here. I don’t really know why.’He seemed to understand.

‘Well, Uhm, this is the village, called Rhode.’‘What’s up with all the weird names?’ I asked. I could slap myself. There’sa cute, no wait, Hot, well, godlike man, and I’m using my big mouth, verygirl like June. I yelled at myself. He laughed. ‘There Greek names of Gods, well, mostly Goddess. You reallydon’t know anything of the Academy do you?’ he smiled at me. I turnedred and nodded.‘So, the names are based on Greek gods/goddess, mostly the ones whohave something to do with the sea. You know, because this school is formermaids and mermen’s.’ He said casually, as if it was no big deal.

If I had any water is my mouth, which had been a cliché, but I still couldn’thelp thinking of it, it had been in his face right now.He looked puzzled. ‘Wait, you, don’t know?’‘Uhm, ne-ah’ I said. ‘What the heck is this academy, where is it anyway, oris it under the lake?’ I said sarcastic. ‘Wait, it isn’t really, right?’ I askedagain, nervous this time.He laughed, but he still seemed worried.‘Should we go for a walk?’ He said.‘Sure, just wait and second, let me get my bag.’ We were in front of mynew ‘home’ now. It was a small house, or actually, kind of a bungalow.‘Would you like to come in?’ I joked.‘Sure,’ he said, and he held the door open for me. I looked around. It was anormal room. It had a small kitchen, with a table for three. And a couchand a ‘’loveseat’’. The room was, next to the few pairs of furniture, filledup with boxes. On the other side of the room were two doors, I supposethe bed- and bathroom. My bag was lying on top of the box beside me. I grabbed it. ‘Let’s go. Youneed to explain. A lót’We bought an ice cream, and we walked towards the lake.‘Well, this academy is for merpeople. You go to school here from your

seventeenth, till your twenty-third. Most likely, if you pass every year. Youknow. The school is up there, on the mountain.’ I looked to the building. Itlooked like a little castle. It started on the lake side, it had thick whitewalls, and red tiles.‘One of your parents Is probably a mermaid, or man. It surprised me theydidn’t tell you. Every boy or girl who has the gen in him/her too, gets aletter, the one you just gave to me. Then you will go to this school, wherewe teach you how to use our gifts.’‘But I’m no mermaid. When I go into the water I still have my legs andstuff. I never tried to breathe under water though. I mumbled.‘That’s what you learn hear. How to change.’ He said.

I was lost in my thoughts, licking from my ice-cream. I was half walking inthe water, with my slippers in my other hand. I loved being in the water.Real water, not the swimming pool water filled up with shine. ‘Has the lakea name too?’ I asked.‘Yes, Eurydice. Again it’s a Goddess.’ I laughed. ‘It’s still vacation, so thereAre not so many people now. they will come when the semester isAbout to start.’ ‘Why are you here so early?’ I asked. ‘I, Uhm, I live here.And..’ Then I felled right on my face in the water. Somebody had dug a hole inthe sand and when the water rose it became invisible. I felled into thewater.Davian was worried at first but almost immediately he knew nothing waswrong, and he burst into laughter. I stood up. ‘Just wait.’ I dropped my

slippers in the sand and run to him. I jumped and toke him with me in myfall. Now we where both wet.We laughed. I looked into his beautiful grey eyes. Then he kissed me righton my lips. I didn’t argue. Instead I kissed him back. His hands were in myhair, and at the same time we ‘walked’ into the water. When we stopped

only our heads came out of the surface.I pulled of his wet shirt, and at the same time, he was undoing me of myblouse. I wrapped my legs around his waist. And for a second wassurprised of how he could swim when technically my entire weight washanging on him.Suddenly, he pulled me of off him. He looked frightened, realizing what hewas doing, I think.‘This is wrong.’ I heard him mumbling, and then he swam back to theshore. ‘Wait!’ I yelled. But he didn’t respond. I looked around. It wasalready dark, but I still could see well enough. I didn’t see my blouseanywhere though. ‘Fuck’ I mumbled. But then I saw something. It wasDavian’s shirt. ‘Good enough’ I said. ‘I pulled it on. It was way too big, butit smelled just like him. I swum back to the shore, get to my home, took ashower and went to bed. Great start of the semester June. I thought, andthen I felled asleep. Dreaming about what could have happened if Daviandidn’t go away.

Academy L’amourChapter one – part threeLeneaMaaike

The sun was shining on my face when I woke up the next day. What shouldI do today? ‘’Davian’’ was the first thing that came into my mind. I reallywanted to see him, but I didn’t even know his last name! I sighed. Let’ssee. Yesterday my parents send me to an academy for mermaids, and I almostdid it with a man I hardly knew. I got out of my bed and dressed. It wasstill very warm and a white summer dress was great. Maybe I’d go to thelake again. And maybe Davian was there too. I looked around. Maybe, justmaybe, I should start packing out.

I started with my clothes. That was the easiest part. I didn’t have manyclothes, well, not as much as normal girls had. Then I got my way into the kitchen. I filled up the cupboards. And noticed, that if I would live here, I needed to shop. If I’m ready here I would go.After a short hour everything was settled.‘Alright, next thing.’ I said to myself. ‘Let’s go to the grocery.’I grabbed my bag, and got out.

There were a couple of people outside, and I asked a girl who seemed niceif she knows where the grocery was. She introduced herself as Lenea, and

she told me that this was her first year too. She walked with me to thegrocery, and told something about herself.

‘So both my father and my mother are merpeople. I lived on an island mywhole life long, and I used to play with my little brother in the sunken ship just a few miles away.’‘So, you know how to, eh, change? In a mermaid, I mean’ I asked.‘Yeah, well, I’m grown up with it, right. It’s a second nature for me.Probably it will be the same for you in time. But from who do you have it?’she asked me.‘I, uh, I don’t know. My parent’s send me to this place, I didn’t know I was

a mermaid till yesterday.’‘Oh, well, it doesn’t really matter, right?’‘Yeah, I don’t really care. But I’ll call them when I get home. But my cell-phone doesn’t have any range.’‘Well, most electronic things don’t work here, I still don’t know why, because the refrigerator and griddle work.’We paid for our food and walked back.‘So I heard there is this really hot teacher, what was his name again, oh,Professor Thallen. Have you seen him?’‘Uhm, no, I haven’t met anyone but you. I didn’t say anything aboutDavian though.’‘Well, my niece, who is a senior, said he’s really hot. She also said his firstname, but I forgot that one.’ Lenea said.

We walked to her home, she had also a house, not far from mines. Wedropped the food and walked to my house. We talked for a while, and itwas already dark when she left.‘Hey, you know, maybe we have some classes together.’ She said.

‘That would be fun.’When I closed the door behind her, I saw something lying on the ground. Itwas a paper. I picked it up and read it

Dear June,I’m so sorry for last night. I just, first of all, you have toknow that I normally don’t do this with every other girl. AndI really like you. But we can’t be more than friends. You’llfind out why. but just so you know, I’m really sorry,

Love, Davian

Ps. You can keep my shirt.

I laughed. A sad laugh though. He didn’t mean anything with last night. Isaw his beautiful grey eyes in my mind. I wonder how he looks, if hechanges, I mean. He seemed like a senior, he wasn’t 17 anymore, so heprobably knew how to change.I shook my head. I can’t think of him anymore. He doesn’t want anything. Itried to call my mother again. But after a while I gave up. Let’s go old styleand write a letter. I looked at the clock, ‘tomorrow’ and after a shower I

went to bed. This day I washed Davian’s shirt, unfortunately his smell hadgone away.

Academy L’amourChapter one - part fourAl good things come to an end.Maaike

I went up early and ate my breakfast. Then I took a paper and pencil, andsat down on a chair.

Dear mom,How are you doing? I’m fine. First I wanna say that I’mnot mad at you. I know that it wasn’t your idea to do itthis way. And it isn’t all that bad here. I have already afriend, kind of. Her name is Lenea. But why didn’t you tell me anything about this mermaidstuff? And are you a mermaid? I tried to call you, butelectronic stuff doesn’t work very well here.Say hi to grandpa, and I hope you write back soon.

Love, June

I decided to post it right now, or else I forgot it for shure. On my way back Ibought an ice cream on my way back.

The next week’s I was a lot with Lenea and her niece Adelyn. She told meal lot about the academy, and by the time school started I was an expertin the history about Amphitrite. The basic rules are the same as mostacademy’s, no boy’s allowed in girl’s dorms, you need to be at yourdorm/house at eleven, follow every class etc.I walked to the door to see if my mother has send me a letter back, shedid.

Dear June,I’m glad you enjoy it there. Lenea sounds nice. Maybe we can

come over sometime? Only if you want it of course.And,.. I’m a mermaid. I studied at Amphitrite too. The reasonI didn’t told you anything was,.. Well, when I met your dad.you know how your dad is, when I was young I was living on anisland. Your dad came with a couple of friends to the beachwhere I was working, and we get in love. But your father hatedfairytales and stories, as you know. I was afraid that when Itold him, he would go away. So I didn’t tell him anything. When we got you, I was happy, but also afraid. What if you hadthe gen too. That would be great, but what was I going to sayto your dad.Your dad doesn’t know that you are on this school, well, heknows you’re here, but he doesn’t know what kind of school it

Page 10: Academy l'Amour chapter one

is. So, if, in anyway, your father asks what kind of schoolyou go to, you must say that it is the university for searesearches and sea animals. O, and there are a couple ofphones in the school, I’m sure that if you ask someone theywill say you where it is, but you can’t enter the school

before the semester start’s but I think you already knew that.I have sent you some money, and I already paid for your schoolbooks, they have to be there in a week.Love, mom

Ps. Grandpa Say’s hi.

The book’s came, and the start of the semester came closer. I didn’t sawDavian anymore, and I spend most of my time hanging with Lenea andAdelyn. Before we knew it, it was the day before the start of the year.Lenea and I had a ‘’sleep-over’’ because Adelyn stayed with other friendsthis night, and we were too both exited to sleep, so a sleep-over would beperfect.

‘Hi June’ Lenea said when I opened the door. ‘Hi Nea, come in.’‘Look what I got, my mom just send it.’ In her hand she had a PortableD.V.D player, and in her other hand a few movies‘Great! Back to the 21th century’ I laughed. We watched to movie ‘The Prince and Me’ and a real classic ‘Beauty andthe Beast’. It was a beautiful movie. At my old school, most of the peoplein my class didn’t like Disney- anymore- I think you’re never too old for it,

a Lenea thought that too, so we both sung our lung’s out with ‘Be OurGuest’

We got to sleep early, and my alarm got on way too early. I packed mystuff, Lenea already had her stuff, and we ate some breakfast, or, lookedat it, we were both too nervous to eat something.

We walked to the school together, and luckily we got in time for our firstclass. The first hour we had swimming, but we had to go to a classroom. We satin the back of the class, and Lenea read her book, again, so I drew some

little persons on my paper.

After a couple of minutes a door opened, or at least, that’s what I thought, because I didn’t look up. A few people tried to hide a gasp.

‘Alright guy’s. Pay attention please’ I heard a voice saying. I think myheart missed a couple of beats before it started again. I looked up.‘I’m Professor Thallen, but you can call me Davian.’
