HIV/AIDS SENSITIZATION WORKSHOP FOR ACADEMIC DIVISION 11 TH AND 12 TH JUNE 2014 AT CENTRAL CATERING UNIT Prof. H.Mutoro making his Opening remarks The Academic Division organized a two day HIV/AIDs sensitization Workshop at the Central Catering Unit. The Workshop was run by the University Health Service Staff under the leadership of Dr. Stephen Ochiel. Dr. Ochiel informed the participants drawn from Academic Division and CIPL that the Workshop was part of the University wide strategy to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS.

The Academic Division organized a two day HIV/AIDs sensitization Workshop at the Central Catering Unit. The Workshop was run by the University Health Service Staff under the leadership of Dr. Stephen Ochiel.

Dr. Ochiel informed the participants drawn from Academic Division and CIPL that the Workshop was part of the University wide strategy to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS.

The Workshop was officially opened by Prof Henry Mutoro Deputy Vice Chancllor (Academic Affairs). Among the participant included Prof. W. Ogara Director CIPL, Mr. B.M.Waweru Academic Registrar, Mr. H.O.D. Webuye Deputy Registrar, Mrs. L.Akaranga Deputy Registrar, Ms J.Horo Deputy Registrar and all staff from the Academic Division.

The following was the statues of HIV/AIDS in Africa and Kenya:

• The first case of HIV infection 1983 in U.S.A. Soon after, HIV infection cases were detected in other countries.

• In 2008, 33.4 million people were living with HIV and AIDS world-wide and out of this 22.4 million were in Sub-Saharan Africa (67%)

• Sub-Saharan Africa is the most heavily affected by HIV

• The first case of HIV infection in Kenya in 1984 - general population and the vulnerable, high-risk groups

• 1999 the Government of Kenya declared HIV epidemic a national disaster

In view of the above, the Workshop covered the following topics:

HIV and AIDS Epidemiology and HIV Prevention HIV Opportunistic Infections and Related Cancers Reproductive Health, Rape, PMTCT and PEP Alcohol and Drug Abuse Stigma and Discrimination Condom Education and Demonstration
