WHY BOCCONI? ENJOY MILAN

Bocconi lies in the heart of Milan, a cosmopolitan, modern city that combines the best of Italy’s yesterday and today. It is the country’s business, design, fashion and music capital, and is also rich in art, history and culture, such as the world-renowned La Scala Opera house, the huge gothic Cathedral, the medieval Sforzesco Castle and Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last Supper.Milan is a leading financial, industrial and commercial center, and is also this country’s most international and dynamic city, where foreign-born citizens make up over 18% of the resident population. Milan is also known as “The Fashion Capital of the World” for the many brands and shops that are based in the city.

It is home to Italy’s biggest banks and insurers, as well as the Italian Stock Exchange. The city offers a rich and diverse entrepreneurial sector, being home to almost 3,000 multinational companies that offer an ideal starting point for any international career.Located in a strategic position in Northern Italy, Milan is a gateway towards Europe and is close to a multitude of other interesting Italian cities and attractions. Venice and Florence are just a two short hours away by bullet train. Skiing and the snow-capped Alps are just an hour north. The seaside and quaint villages of Liguria and “Cinque Terre” are also only a couple of hours away.

studies. Bocconi has long tradition of excellence in teaching, and has become an international point of reference for research in the areas of economics, business, finance and political science.

Experiencing an active and interesting time on campus, participating in sports, cultural activities,

entertainment, student associations, student-run media and volunteering.

STUDYING AT BOCCONI

In 2019-2020 Bocconi will offer seven Bachelor of Science programs taught in English in the areas of Management, Economics and Finance, as well as in the areas of Political Science and Data Science.

A few of the BSc programs allow you to create tracks within a specific area, building up your knowledge of one particular subject.

Other programs are placed at the intersection between different areas. They provide the opportunity to create mixed tracks, thus enriching your curriculum with skills from more than one subject area.

Since these are very broad fields of study, let’s look at them briefly one by one to see what they mean at Bocconi.

5 FIELDS OF STUDY

7 BSC PROGRAMS

IN ENGLISH

FIELDS OF STUDY

STUDYING AT BOCCONI | FIELDS OF STUDY

MANAGEMENT

In a few words, a student in a Management program will learn:

How a company or organization is run: the importance of each function, the main roles, the organization processes

How a company or organization competes in its markets: who its competitors are, what the peculiarities of its industry are and which strategy is the best to adopt

How to organize human and financial resources in order to provide useful products or services, creating additional value (both human and financial)

And after graduation? Graduates from a study path in Management will be able to work as analysts, managers, consultants and entrepreneurs in manufacturing or service companies, in banks and financial institutions, in consultancy firms, in public and nonprofit organizations, and in cultural, sports, communication and artistic companies. Essentially, everywhere. As increasingly requested by the job market, the digital economy is a new field of study, straddling management, economics and computer science. Its aim is to interpret data through the lens of economic models in order to help companies take decisions to gain competitive advantages.

ECONOMICS

There are many definitions of “economics”. Whatever meaning you prefer, Economics is first and foremost a social science that studies economic relationships and social interactions among individuals, families, companies, banks and governments. You’ll learn how to interpret economic phenomena prevailing in modern economies, for instance:

What are the pros and cons of globalization

What are the problems afflicting the labor market and how to solve them

What are the policies that can promote growth in poor and developing countries

What is the role of central banks for economic growth and what instruments they can use

And after graduation? You won’t learn what to think but how to think, through rigorous analytical and logical methods (using math, statistics and econometrics). Learning to reason in a disciplined way will be very important whatever career you choose. Our graduates in Economics generally find work in multinational companies, in international organizations or in the financial sector; sometimes they decide to continue their studies and pursue academic careers at universities all over the world.

20 | Bachelor of Science Programs | 2019-2020 2019-2020 | Bachelor of Science Programs | 21

FINANCE

Studying Finance means gaining understanding of what the financial system is, and focusing on the main actors that operate within it. That means you’ll learn:

How the financial markets work (including the stock exchange and central banks)

What the main financial intermediaries are (such as banks and insurance companies), what they do and how they operate

What financial instruments are (stocks, bonds, derivatives, etc.) and what they are used for

How companies manage their money, how they invest it and how they borrow it: corporate finance

And after graduation? A career in the field of Finance – after a BSc or an MSc program – typically means working in a bank, a financial institution, a consultancy firm, a financial authority, a fund or companies of other kinds within the financial/administrative realm.

POLITICAL SCIENCE

What is Political Science, precisely? It’s a social science aimed at understanding and explaining public policies, bringing together a range of topics such as social and economic policies, government and decision-making, political economics, international relations, and politics in general. Political Science at Bocconi involves a mix of disciplines ranging from sociology to history, law and economics, through which you will learn:

How to design economically efficient, politically sustainable public policies

How to implement them effectively

How to evaluate them using specific methods and analysis techniques

And after graduation? Your study path will prepare you for jobs in international organizations and private firms that habitually deal with the public sector and in particular with policy-making matters.

DATA SCIENCE

Data science is a new and fast growing scientific discipline. We are on the verge of the data driven economy. Thanks to increased connectivity and growing digitalization, humanity is generating quantities of data unprecedented in history and this is bringing a revolution in all sectors of our life, of which we are now only seeing the initial phases. Data science at Bocconi is a major intellectual discipline across economic, physical and statistical sciences that relies on the methods of artificial intelligence, computer science, mathematics, and statistics, as well as on the rigorous thinking of economic and physical modelling. The data science field will allow you to learn:

How to form your analytical preparation through basic and advanced courses in mathematics

How to grow your computer science knowledge with courses in computer programming, algorithms and machine learning

How to acquire systematic thinking in the statistical modelling and interpretation of data through basic and advanced courses in probability theory and statistical science

How to cultivate your economic modelling through the logical rigor of courses such as game theory and mechanism design

How to appreciate the fundamental role of data science in the solution of social, industrial and technology problems with courses in the marketing and management sciences

And after graduation? Nowadays, demand for jobs in the data science sector outstrip supplies. Professional figures that merge computational and statistical skills with rigorous economic and management thinking are highly sought in the market by private firms in all sectors and by public institutions as well. On the other hand, some students will pursue the intellectual side of data science and decide to continue their studies to start academic careers.

YOUR CAREER IN MANAGEMENT

MARIA SOFIA GAZZOTTI – CONSULTINGUndergraduate studies: World Bachelor in BusinessInternship: P&P, Singapore; The Boston Consulting Group, Dubai, UAECompany: McKinsey & Company, London, UK

I chose this Bachelor of Science because it would allow me to attend three of the world’s top-notch universities, providing an excellent academic preparation and innumerable profession-al opportunities. Each university is unique in terms of culture, campus life, student body and business environment. Never-theless, what really inspired me to choose the program was the idea that living and studying on three continents would teach me more than any regular curriculum could ever offer – inside and outside of the classroom. Adjusting to different education methods and structures, while taking advantage of all the ex-tracurricular opportunities, made me a more flexible, curious and quick learner. The program gave me a competitive edge in this field by providing me with a strong international per-spective that most of my peers gain through years on the job. Rather than a specific course, I would say the wide variety of the curriculum is what best prepared me and led me to pursue a career in management consulting.

GIOVANNI GARDELLI – HIGH TECHUndergraduate studies: BSc in Business Administration and ManagementGraduate studies: MSc in International Management, Bocconi UniversityInternational experience: Fudan University, Shanghai, ChinaInternship: Yahoo, Barcelona, Spain Company: Snapchat, Los Angeles, US

My experience during the Bachelor program in Bocconi was intense and pretty formative, I started to have a clearer idea of what I was looking forward to working on. In particular, after the amazing experience I had during my undergraduate ex-change semester in North Carolina. The international mindset I have developed helped me a lot in being very flexible both in terms of my ability to travel and relocate frequently, as well

as always dealing with new challenges, environments and mar-kets, regardless if I’m in Barcelona, London or here in Califor-nia. My passion for ever-changing job contexts did the rest: I was responsible for lots of different projects during my years at Yahoo. I have recently taken on another challenge, in one of the fastest growing ventures in the world.

SALOMÈ MIKAUTADZE - FAST MOVING CONSUMER GOODSUndergraduate studies: BSc in Economics and Management for Arts, Culture and CommunicationGraduate studies: MSc in Marketing Management, Bocconi UniversityInternship: Italy-America Chamber of Commerce, NYC, USCompany: L’Oréal, Milan, Italy

After classical high school, I was looking for a university program that could give me the opportunity to balance creative-cultural studies with economics and management. The dual nature of this program at Bocconi gave me the opportunity to study eco-nomic and business subjects while at the same time developing a creative sensibility that has stayed with me during all my years here. This inclination led me to collaborate with Bocconi TV, run by a team of students led by common enthusiasm. That highly enriching experience influenced the continuation of my studies and the beginning of my career.

YOUR CAREER IN FINANCE

LORENZO PASQUALE LONGO – TRADINGUndergraduate studies: BSc in International Economics and Finance, major in Finance Graduate studies: Master in Finance, Bocconi University International experience: Exchange Program at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USInternship: Goldman Sachs, London, UK Company: Goldman Sachs, London, UK

After attending a classical high school in Italy, I wanted to find a program that could build on my natural interests in quantitative and analytical subjects, while at the same time maintaining a practical and versatile focus. My Bachelor of Science in Eco-nomics and Finance met these requirements perfectly, by com-bining a rigorous theoretical background with aspects applied to the world of finance. It was a very challenging study pro-gram, but unique in that it provided in-depth coverage of both corporate finance and quantitative finance, for a fully rounded education. This proved to be a key competitive advantage for my professional career.

SILVIA BANDINU – INVESTMENT BANKING Undergraduate studies: BSc in International Economics and Finance Graduate studies: MSc in Finance, Bocconi UniversityInternational experience: University of Florida, Gainesville, USInternship: UBS, London, UKCompany: UBS, London, UK

I have always been fascinated by numbers and wanted to give them a practical application. At Bocconi I was able to discover what finance is, what its role in the economy is and the thou-sands of aspects it can take on within a commercial business, at a bank or in financial markets. During my undergraduate pro-gram, I developed a passion for financial markets and the mech-anisms that influence them, so I decided to pursue a similar track and improve my knowledge in the Master of Science in Finance, with the objective of starting a career in investment banking.

MADDALENA MORI - FUND Undergraduate studies: BSc in Economic and Social Sciences Graduate studies: MSc in Economic and Social Sciences, Bocconi UniversityInternational experience: Tsinghua University of Beijing, Beijing, ChinaInternship: Banca Esperia, Milan, ItalyCompany: Berenberg Capital Markets, London, UK

Thanks to the elasticity of my studies, I was able to embrace a great challenge that involved coding and statistical analy-sis in a finance-related environment, where, if your model is not working correctly, you could lose a lot of money. I felt very proud when I started, in part because my colleagues are from a completely different background, some of whom studied mathematics or physics. I owe to my Bocconi experience the importance of never giving up and the fact that as long as you have a good teacher you can learn basically anything.

YOUR CAREER IN ECONOMICS

MONICA MORLACCO – PhDUndergraduate studies: BSc in Economic and Social Sciences Graduate studies: MSc in Economic and Social Sciences, Bocconi UniversityInternational experience: New York University, NYC, USUniversity: PhD candidate at Yale University, New Haven, US

During my last year as an undergraduate student, I spent a semester abroad at New York University, as part of the Bocco-ni International Exchange Program. I don’t have words to de-scribe how much that experience made me grow professionally and as a person. Then, during my MSc in Economic and Social Sciences, my good academic standing allowed me to take part in a special program with Yale University. Going there was a life changer for me. I was determined to make the most out of that year. I took all courses, comparing myself to some of the best economics candidates in the world. It was in that moment when I best appreciated how much Bocconi had trained me for the international stage. I felt motivated, and I decided I was ready for that experience. That brought me to who I am now, a PhD student in Economics at Yale.

VICTOR MYLONAS – INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION Undergraduate studies: BSc in International Economics, Management and Finance Internship: KMPG, Milan, Italy; The World Bank, Washington D.C., US; European In-vestment Bank, Luxembourg City, LuxembourgCompany: International Monetary Fund, Washington D.C., US

Through the activities I took part in during my Bocconi experi-ence, I developed not only economic reasoning and intuition, but also my leadership, teamwork and public speaking skills. Having been exposed to a multitude of subjects taught by skilled faculty in the fields of political, development, public, monetary and trade economics, I got a full-time job offer from the International Monetary Fund after pursuing two intern-ships.

ALBERTO ALBANESE – BUSINESS ANALYTICSUndergraduate studies: BSc in Economic and Social SciencesGraduate studies: MSc in Economics and Management of Innovation and Technology, Bocconi UniversityInternational experience: Copenhagen Business School, DenmarkInternship: Oticon A/S, Copenhagen, DenmarkCompany: Coca-Cola HBC, Milan, Italy

My interests in quantitative methods and economics led me to choose Bocconi University. Gaining a mix of skills in the subjects of management/economics is essential for a career in the digital era. I think that the new BSc in Economics, Management and Computer Science is a program that nests these competences from the start. Graduates in this program will have a stronger background in com-puter science, artificial intelligence and statistics than other grad-uates, and I believe these skills can be a competitive advantage.

DARIO LAMACCHIA – DATA SCIENCE Undergraduate studies: BSc in Economic and Social SciencesGraduate studies: MSc in Economics and Management of Innovations and Technology, Bocconi UniversityInternational experience: U.C. Berkeley, California, US; Waseda Business School, Tokyo, JapanInternship: ExportUSA NYC Corp., NYC, USCompany: Microsoft, Munich, Germany

The Bachelor in Economics and Social Sciences gave me the unique opportunity to be an exchange student at U.C. Berkeley in California. This academic journey influenced me a lot, in an unexpected way: it was too close to Silicon Valley, to the startups environment and to that spirit of innovation and exciting technol-ogy that I got the chance to breath every day in the bay. I started wondering if I could find something matching my initial interests in being a researcher and deepen my knowledge of this new broader world of entrepreneurship, venture capital and innova-tion. This led me to go ahead with my MSc program, the perfect mix of economics, statistics, innovation, startups, VCs, valuations, and so on. All these buzzwords became my daily bread.

YOUR CAREER IN POLITICS

GIOVANNA TERESA MANNUCCI - INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONUndergraduate studies: BSc in Business Administration and ManagementGraduate studies: MSc in Economics and Management of Government and International Organizations, Bocconi UniversityInternship: United Nations, Committee on Economic and Social Development, New York, US; WTO, Geneva Area, SwitzerlandCompany: World Food Programme, Rome, Italy

Ever since I was little, I knew I wanted to work for the United Nations. What I have learned at Bocconi has allowed me to understand the underlying dynamics of public management, it has prepared me for the difficulties and the peculiarities of the public sector, teaching me how to improve processes and services in international organizations. Working as a young in-ternational civil servant is not a straightforward or easy path: for many of us, contracts are short and uncertain, you need to be adaptable to a challenging international environment, you need to be flexible to be relocated around the world – but that’s also what makes it fascinating.

STEFANO LIGRONE – DIPLOMATIC CAREERUndergraduate studies: BSc in Business Administration and ManagementGraduate studies: MSc in Economics and Management of Government and International Organizations, Bocconi UniversityInternational experience: Koç, Istanbul, Turkey; FGV/EBAPE, Rio de Janeiro, BrazilInternship: UNDG LAC, Panama City, PanamaCompany: Italian Embassy, Pretoria, South Africa

During my stays abroad as an exchange student, I discovered the honor and the responsibility connected with representing your country. I then started to nurture my aspiration of becom-ing a diplomat. I thought it would fit my interests and aptitudes quite well: my passion for geopolitics and my ambition to serve in public administration. My devotion to Italy and at the same time my curiosity and openness to different cultures led me to

focus on international organizations. I am now a diplomat at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Coop-eration, serving in the Multilateral Development Cooperation Desk. Responsibilities are high already; workloads are intense. However, I cannot deny I am profoundly happy, trying to con-tribute my grain of sand every day.

SARA GHAZANFARI - LOBBYING Undergraduate studies: BSc in Economic and Social SciencesGraduate studies: MSc in Economics and Management of Government and International Organizations, Bocconi UniversityCompany: ETNO (European Telecommunications Network Operators’ Association), Brussels, Belgium

I chose Bocconi because of an interest in policy analysis. I re-member how the lessons of Public Management during my Bachelor program in Economics and Social Sciences were in-spiring and motivating for the rest of my studies and in my career choices.I got motivated by the chance to have a career that is not only focused on the private sphere, but that also offered opportu-nities in the public and international areas. I chose to take the MSc in Economics and Management of Government and Inter-national Organizations to follow these passions. The program is suitable for anyone who is planning an international career: it is very well known abroad by employers and colleagues and it provides adequate preparation for careers in European and internationals institutions. As for the private sector, it certainly does not pale beside other programs focused only on business administration. During my studies, I took part in numerous na-tional and international projects, and went to Brussels for an internship in the field of European policymaking.

STUDYING AT BOCCONIBSC PROGRAMS: TEACHING AND PROGRAM STRUCTURE

Each academic year is divided into two terms:– the Fall semester (from September to January)– the Spring semester (from February to June). Courses last one semester and exams are generally divided into two parts (with partial exams): this helps you keep up with your studies. On average, class groups are made up of around 100 students, and later in the program courses become more and more interactive with small group work, research and presentations assigned periodically. This gives classmates the

opportunity to have a direct relationship with the faculty and other students in the program. Lectures are also generally held either in the morning or the afternoon, allowing time for individual study and group projects during the rest of the day. Attendance is not compulsory but is strongly advised. Each course is assigned a given number of credits. One credit point corresponds to an average of 25 hours of work, divided as follows: 8-10 hours of classroom activities (lectures, exercises and seminars) and 15 hours of individual study.

FIRST YEAR–COMPULSORY COURSES: The study of management and

economics in the first year and in the first semester of the second year lays the basis of a solid theoretical mindset and is similar but not identical throughout all our BSc programs.

–COMPUTER SKILLS: All BSc programs include a Computer Science/Computer Skills course and exam. In order to take this course, students must first obtain the ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence-7 modules). You will also have the opportunity to learn computer programming with Python, a flexible and highly adaptable coding language, which is among the most requested by employers.

– FIRST FOREIGN LANGUAGE: Students attending BSc programs taught in English can choose as their first foreign language either English or another EU language including French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. Italian language is compulsory for non-Italian mother tongue students (as first or second language). Regular foreign language exams may be replaced with a valid international foreign language certificate, duly recognized by Bocconi, which will be assigned a grade.

SECOND YEAR– SPECIALIZATION COURSES: During the second year,

particularly in the second semester, you will deepen the knowledge of the main topics related to your program, and you will reach a first level of specialization.

– SECOND FOREIGN LANGUAGE: Students may choose from among French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish as their second foreign language.

– SOFT SKILLS: You will be able to improve some important soft skills, considered crucial by your future employers: a multi-cultural approach, group working, presentation skills, managerial and leadership skills.

THIRD YEAR– ELECTIVE COURSES: During the third year you’ll reach a

second level of personalization of your study plan, so you will be asked to pick a number of electives from a list of available courses.

– INTERNSHIP/EXCHANGE PROGRAM: You’ll have the chance to spend a semester in a partner university abroad through the Exchange program. Furthermore, you can replace one of the last elective courses with an internship experience in a firm or organization in Italy and abroad (you can also do this during the summer between the second and third year).

– FINAL REPORT: This is your project, the opportunity you have to demonstrate your abilities in researching, developing and writing a personal reflection on a topic. It is usually the last step before graduation, but it takes at least two months to prepare and produce an effective final report, so take your time!

AND THEN WHAT?After graduation, you will face a crossroads: will you go to work or go on studying? What we can say is that nearly 90% of our graduates decide to apply for a Master of Science program. In fact, as a Bocconi graduate, you will be equipped with the skills needed to take any MSc program offered by the University. Otherwise, you can decide to continue your studies at another top university abroad. The choice is up to you.

STUDYING AT BOCCONI STUDYING AT BOCCONI | ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

WHY CHOOSE THIS PROGRAM?

It’s a program in economics with a rich interdisciplinary nature, and with solid quantitative and methodological foundations. With its particular blend of economic, quantitative and social science topics, this innovative program finds synergies among subjects to attain different perspectives on leading international economic issues

It’s among the pioneers in Europe in proposing a new integrated view of economics and social sciences. Today, sociologists make use of game theory. Demographers use economic models to analyze population dynamics. Economists talk about crime and incentives, analyze the mind like both philosophers and psychologists do, study social stratification, and the like

It focuses on understanding how individuals think and make decisions (e.g., about saving, energy consumption,

fertility, health, etc), a crucial dimension for firms and organizations (e.g. when launching a new product) as well as for governments designing economic policies (aimed, e.g., at tackling poverty or unemployment). The linchpin of its innovative study plan is that individual behavior is not only determined by mere economic factors (how much I profit from a decision) but also by psychological traits (how emotions and cognitive limits shape actual decisions) and social norms (how the behavior of others, and shared common values, affect one’s decision)

This Bachelor of Science is dedicated to students with an international vocation and an ambitious intellectual disposition: starting with a more rounded and broader educational background, the program prepares them for a higher level of specialization, with a Master of Science program

foundation in economics and business, is essential for creating value from the huge amount of data that companies possess,

developing a new approach that goes beyond simply crunching numbers and effectively supports decision-making.

Due to its flexibility, students spend one semester studying abroad at a partner university and have the option of doing an internship
