National Conference on: Academic Writing
November 18th-19
th, 2013
In line with our earlier scientific events, this
year’s conference is dedicated for the study of
academic writing. Participants are welcome to
submit presentations that provide succinct
reflections concerning any practical aspect of
academic writing of English / French in the
context of foreign language learning. Members
of the English Department at the University of
Adrar are pleased to announce its second
national conference. Over the years, we have
observed that various players in the field often
take academic writing lightly. This situation
expresses probably a frustration resulting from
a mixture of absence of will as well as
deficiency of adequate instruction. After all,
with graduation almost guaranteed and
employment usually pending, academic
writing becomes a dead currency! Faculty
members are more than ever called to seriously
think over such a perplexing state of affair.
Their hesitancy and sometimes unwillingness
to address academic writing as a priority make
their pedagogical efforts subject to question.
For purposes of clarity and mutual benefits, the
scientific committee seeks to uncover what is
really at stake when it comes to academic
writing. This committee welcomes any paper
proposal that attends to the following lines of
inquiry:
Academic writing: defintions
Academic writing in different
disciplines inside a typical English
department: literature, civilization,
linguistics, etc…
Academic writing in different
disciplines (taught outside the English
departments): Law, Engineering,
History, Islamic Studies, etc…
Challenges facing the training team
‘l’équipe de formation’: locating the
adequate instructor
Challenges facing the teacher: choice
of timing in the weekly timetable, the
selection of textbooks, dealing with
overcrowded classes, coordination
with other classes like grammar,
literature and civilization.
Developing tools for better academic
writing in the 21st century
The impact of changing social,
political, and economic forces on
academic writing
The above list cannot be exhaustive. The
committee welcomes any paper that attend to
writing in academic setting and it connection
with the Algerian university. We want to make
sure that the only measure of accepting a given
proposal is its capacity to stay away from
theoretical deliberations and its direct
preoccupation with any practical aspect of the
problematic.
