LET’S PRACTICE HOW YOU CAN HELP
Imagine your student is a 1st year student at UW taking their toughest class, they get their midterm exam back and it is below average, a close to failing grade. They call home and are seeking guidance from you with 5 weeks left in the quarter.
FIXED VS GROWTH MINDSET
HOW YOU LEARN
> Our reaction – optimistic vs pessimistic–depends on whether we have developed pathways in one domain or another
> Luckily, we can change our behaviors, emotions and thinking
> The 10,000 Hour Rule– Malcom Gladwell & Macklemore
Neuroplasticity: changes in neural pathways and synapses due to changes in behavior, environment,
neural processes, thinking, and emotions.
HOW TO HELP WHEN YOU DON’T KNOW THEY ARE STRUGGLING
>Be sensitive to cues to changes in behavior from your student
>Know what to ask to find out more– How do you feel the test went? (do not
ask about grades right away)–Who did you study with? How did that
go?– Did you try tutoring or talking to your
TA/professor?–What did you do to prepare?
HOW YOU CAN HELP YOUR STUDENT
>Encourage them to take risks & try new things
>Encourage them to get involved>Praise the process, effort and growth
they have made, not the outcomes>If they do not do well, let them know
to keep trying and working at it
Nurture a growth mindset in your student
HOW YOU CAN HELP YOUR STUDENT
>Tell them to seek out campus resources/support staff and friends/ mentors
>Have them call or go to the centers, staff, professors/TAs themselves
>Have them come see us at Academic Support Programs and we can help them connect in or find help
Come up with ways you can nurture a growth mindset in your student
FROM CAROL DWECK’S BOOK ‘MINDSET’
"Do you quit a lot? Do you think for a minute and then stop? If you do, you should think for a long time -- two minutes maybe, and if you can't get it you should read the problem again. If you can't get it then, you should raise your hand and ask the teacher."
HOW WE CAN HELP YOUR STUDENT
>Help them nurture a growth mindset>Help connect them to resources that
will enhance their learning>Support them in finding ways to be
resilient and never give up
HOW WE CAN HELP YOUR STUDENT
>We want to help them be more responsible and be independent learners
>We want to help them take risks and try new things
>We know they will struggle but we want to help them move forward through hardship to be problem solvers– It is safer for them to fall here; we will be
their safety net
