The array of majors is vast and each has been uniquely designed to challenge, inspire and transform.

Our goal is to feed our students’ appetite for academic achievement and equip them for further education, the job market or a life of service. Within the classroom environment, students find High Point professors to be engaging mentors, eager to share their own research and scholarly interests; beyond the classroom students are constantly met with opportunities to learn in a very practical and innovative way. It is High Point University’s signature experiential learning program that differentiates this collegiate experience from others. Here, the world is the lab. Students have opportunities for study abroad, Study America, off-campus practicum and internships, independent study, undergraduate research and collaboration, service learning and volunteer partnerships with numerous nonprofit agencies. These outlets reinforce what is taught in our classes while providing students with resources for professional networking and deep, practical knowledge of their fields.

With the academic experience in the classroom, the experiential opportunities available and the University’s commitment to holistic, character-based learning, our students receive an education that is unsurpassed.

FROM CLASSROOM TO THE CONTROL ROOM: The persistence and lessons Jacquelyn Reilly learned at HPU paved the way for a fulfilling career as a Motion Graphics Controller at ESPN. The Class of 2012 graduate chose the graphic design major due to her love of art creativity. She knew she would get invaluable industry experience at HPU when she met Professor Allan Beaver, artist in residence, who once ran his own advertising firm in New York City and worked with major artists like Andy Warhol and campaigns such as Subaru, Jockey and Matchbox Cars. “Mr. Beaver was a tough teacher, but his intensity was balanced with friendliness,” says Reilly. “He has high standards and gave me difficult projects that pushed me and challenged me. That’s paying off now at ESPN where I’m expected to handle tough assignments every day.”

THE SCHOOL OF ART AND DESIGN is committed to providing a stimulating and inclusive environment that encourages the exchange of ideas and the intellectual and creative development of both students and faculty. We value the role of the artist and designer as an individual who can facilitate social/cultural change at a local and global level. The words of Martha Graham, one of the 20th century’s truly creative artists, ring true. “There is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost.” The faculty at HPU is here to help you find that expression. For those wishing to cultivate and advance their creative and critical skills, we invite you to join one of our outstanding programs.

COURSE OF STUDY:Electronic Media ProductionGames and Interactive Media DesignJournalismMedia and Popular Culture StudiesStrategic Communication PROGRAM OVERVIEW: The teacher education

programs at High Point University seek to prepare teacher candidates who possess knowledge of the learner, which in turn leads to the facilitation of the skills needed by P–12 students to critically think, problem solve, utilize technology, communicate and collaborate.

THE TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAMS at High Point University have been approved by the National Council for the accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the North Carolina State Board of Education. In 2012–2013, 100% of students in the teacher education program who attempted the Praxis II specialty exam passed in these areas: Elementary Education, Special Education, Middle Grades Math, Middle Grades Science, Physics/Content Knowledge and Reading Specialist.

FACILITIES: The 31,000-square-foot School of Education houses the education and psychology departments in technologically advanced classrooms, computer labs and offices. It features high-tech educational equipment, such as smart boards, a children’s book library, math and science touch screen games, a methods lab designed to look and feel like a real elementary school classroom, a Mac lab and psychology research booths. The LEED certified building is also setting an example for modern-day energy conservation with floor to ceiling windows for natural lighting

and light sensors in the rooms. LEED certification is a rating system for “green” buildings developed by the Green Building Environmental Council of the United States (USGBC) and provides certain environmental standards for construction.

STUDENT TEACHING: The student teaching internship is 8 credit hours and therefore is considered to be a full-time experience. One of the most significant gateways used to assess the competency of teacher education majors is the student teaching internship. It provides hands-on experience with the supervision of a licensed, cooperating teacher. The student gradually takes on more responsibility in the classroom; by the end of the internship the student will be teaching the class for the whole school day or class period.
