Picture yourself in a challenging and rewarding career as an accountant at one of the world’s largest and most prestigious firms, including Pricewaterhouse Coopers or the United States Government Accountability Office (GAO). Graduates of Elmira College’s Accounting program have taken positions with these prestigious organizations as well as at Deloitte, KPMG, and the Office of the New York State Comptroller. Accounting majors are prepared to pursue careers in public accounting, industry, or government, or seek graduate work in either business or advanced accounting studies.

Students have three curriculum options to choose from, depending on career goals. The 120-hour B.S. in Accounting option is designed for students planning an accounting career in private industry or government or seeking CPA licensure after completion of a graduate program. The 150-hour B.S. in Accounting option is suited to graduates seeking CPA licensure in states that do not require a graduate degree for licensure. The third option is a 120-hour B.S. in Business Administration with a Specialization in Management Accounting, tailored for students who will not sit for the CPA Examination but plan to pursue a career in business or enroll in an MBA program after graduation from Elmira College.

My involvement in on-campus clubs enabled me to secure a position before graduation! I had an offer with KPMG in New York City by my senior year!

In the late nineteenth century, Elmira was the summer home of one of the greatest American writers — Mark Twain, whose original octagonal study was relocated to campus in 1952. Twain is one of many iconic figures students explore in the American Studies program, which examines American culture through the lens of history and literature, art history, philosophy, and political science.

Students in the program are introduced to the themes of American culture in two required courses: “Perspectives on the American Dream,” and “Individualism and Community in American Life.” The capstone of the major is a senior research project that examines an aspect of contemporary American culture from the perspective of the introductory course themes. Students in the program have pursued graduate study or taken positions in journalism, education, museums, or government.

After I took an American Studies class with Dr. Mitchell, I was hooked, and knew I wanted to be in the major. I am currently looking into American Studies graduate school programs, in hopes of becoming an American Studies professor.

Are you interested in human cultures and how human beings organize their ways of life? Or how social institutions such as the family, religion and the media, shape human interaction? In this interdisciplinary program, students will develop an understanding and appreciation for different cultures around the world — the focus of anthropology. They will also study sociology, the discipline that analyzes how groups of people live in society and how they are influenced by social institutions. Our joint program emphasizes work on social inequality (race, class, and gender), and the impact of globalization on society and the growing culture of global capitalism. Students in the program take two foundational courses in each discipline, choose electives from either discipline, and complete a social theory and methodology course sequence that allows each student to create his or her own original research project, suitable for development into a thesis or presentation at a professional conference.

Graduates from this program have entered graduate and professional programs in international development, social work, counseling and public administration, law school, as well as doctoral programs in anthropology or sociology. Recent graduates have also joined the Peace Corps and AmeriCorps, conducting health education in Ghana, and participating in post-Katrina disaster relief. Our graduates also find work in social and human services, international non-profits, social justice programs, education, government, and tourism.

If you are passionate about art, enjoy looking closely and interpreting the world around you, and are interested in energized and intense small classes held in big studios, then Elmira College’s Art major may be the program for you. Students majoring in Art refine their skills in a wide variety of media while exploring the history of art. Majors may select one of the following concentrations: Studio Art, Visual Arts, or the Childhood Education Concentration in Visual and Performing Arts. In any and all chosen tracks, Art majors in addition to Art History take basic foundation courses in drawing, painting, and sculpture as well as electives in illustration, life drawing, bronze casting, photography, computer graphics and animation, printmaking, and ceramics.

Students interested in pursuing a career in Arts Management may take additional courses in Business Administration. Graduates from the Art program have successfully transitioned to work as professional artists, graphic and web designers, photographers, art educators and art therapists. With issues such as global warming, stem cell research, and the obesity epidemic dominating headlines, biologists are in growing demand. Choosing to major in Biology at Elmira College will give you the tools to analyze these problems, from the in-depth study of cell, micro, and molecular biology to ecology and evolution.

Biology majors at Elmira College have the opportunity to conduct independent research with faculty in state-of-the-art laboratories and present their findings at conferences throughout North America. Graduates have successfully found positions in research laboratories, governmental agencies, environmental companies, and secondary schools. They have also pursued graduate education in the health professions — pre-medicine, veterinary, or dentistry — and in ecology, microbiology, physiology, and pharmacology.

I think the most valuable skills I learned at Elmira were the ones that allow me to think critically, write well, and speak well. In all careers, not just the sciences, being able to convey ideas effectively and truly think through a problem are invaluable skills.

Are you interested in starting your own business or working in banking and finance? Are you drawn to social policy issues dealing with poverty and the environment? Majoring in Economics provides an excellent background for a wide range of careers, from business, law, and politics to international and government policy-making. Students who choose to pursue Economics further in graduate school become professional economists and work for academic and private research organizations, Fortune 500 companies such as Google, as well as institutions like the Federal Reserve, United Nations, and World Bank.

Economics is a social science which analyzes decision making at the individual (micro) and aggregate (macro) level. Economics majors use theoretical and empirical tools to study the ways in which individuals, organizations, societies, and nations make decisions about the allocation of scarce resources and the distribution of the product or output. Students in the program complete a core curriculum of seven courses in economic theory, mathematics, and quantitative methods. They also choose four elective courses in topics ranging from game theory to environmental, social, and international economic issues.

For detailed information about the program including faculty webpages, resources for economists, alumni updates, career options and advice about preparing and applying for graduate programs in economics, please visit the Economics Department Home Page.

With a national nursing shortage that is expected to grow as baby boomers age, the demand for nurses, particularly those with bachelor’s degrees, will continue to intensify. Elmira College’s Nursing major is helping to meet the demand by offering students a rigorous program that includes clinical experience in many critical specialties, including pediatrics, obstetrics, critical care, medical/surgical, community health, and mental health services. Nursing majors begin their clinical practice in their sophomore year, working in agencies conveniently located near campus.

Students may enroll in either full-time or part-time study in the program, which is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, Inc. Graduates of the program are regularly recruited by the most prestigious institutions in the region and across the country, including Duke University Hospital, Johns Hopkins Hospital, and Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute. Nursing majors who have pursued graduate degrees have successfully found positions as administrators, educators, midwives, nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists, and researchers.

Are you interested in reading Plato’s Socratic dialogues, learning about the philosophy of Existentialism, or uncovering the mysteries of Buddhism? Students majoring in Philosophy and Religion explore the world’s greatest thinkers and analyze the wealth of issues that evolved from their beliefs. This interdisciplinary program covers the history of philosophy from the Greeks through the Twentieth Century, a study of the Old and New Testaments, and other major religions such as Hinduism and Islam.

Elmira College Philosophy and Religion students have participated in regional Ethics Bowl competitions at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and Marist College and presented original research at the Undergraduate Philosophy Conference at SUNY Oneonta. Majoring in Philosophy and Religion is an excellent preparation for careers in law, education, business, the ministry, and any field that requires thinking critically about complex issues.

Intern with the New York State Legislature, Congress, government agencies, or even the United

Nations! Learn about political parties and campaigns and then volunteer for a party or candidate.

As a Political Science major, you will learn the theories behind the actions of governments,

parties, candidates, and voters. You can gain practical experience observing those theories

at work during your internship or volunteer work with a local, state, or federal agency or for a

nongovernmental organization or political party. On campus, not only will you engage in class in

lively debate over the most current and newsworthy topics, but through the Elmira College Civics

Society, the College Democrats, and the College Republicans, you will be able to take those

debates out of the classroom and into your everyday life.

As a Political Science major, you will explore human behavior at the very nexus of the social

sciences. Aspects of Psychology, History, Economics, and Philosophy help us to understand what

compels humans to cooperate and govern and what compels them to engage in conflict. With

concentrations in American Politics, World Politics, and Public Affairs, our graduates have gone

on to law school and graduate programs in political science (e.g., the London School of Economics

and Politics, the University of Michigan, the University at Albany, and the University at Buffalo).

Challenging courses that develop your reading, writing, and critical thinking skills provide a solid foundation for law school. Elmira College majors that provide excellent preparation for a career in law include Philosophy, English Literature, History, Criminal Justice, Sociology, Classical Studies, Economics, Political Science, and even Mathematics and the Natural Sciences.

Students interested in attending law school are encouraged to seek internships to gain experience in the field and to learn whether they are suited for a career in law. Another valuable resource at Elmira College is The Legal Eagles, a Pre-Law club that meets regularly and invites local attorneys, judges, and law-school recruiters to its events. Pre-Law students should seek academic counseling shortly after their freshman year and plan to take the LSAT just after their junior year.

The path to medical school is different for every person. Elmira College students interested in medicine can major in the Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, or Humanities, depending on their personal interests and goals. The rigorous curriculum will prepare you for the challenges of medical training while helping shape your character to be a competent, compassionate physician.

Students can gain first-hand experience in scientific research in fields such as microbiology and chemistry through Elmira College’s eight-week Summer Research Program. During the academic year, Pre-Med students can attend monthly lunches that feature workshops about various health professions and the application process for medical school. The Pre-Health Club sponsors study sessions, internships, and opportunities for students to shadow local physicians and observe surgical procedures at area hospitals.

Imagine yourself helping children, teens, and adults as a counselor, or being a researcher unlocking the secrets of the brain. As a Psychology major at Elmira College, you will have an excellent foundation to prepare you for these and many other careers in the field, which your professors will help you explore. Psychology majors from Elmira College have completed advanced degrees and are now working in diverse settings, including those that are clinical, industrial, and educational. They also work in related fields such as business, law, and allied healthcare.

Psychology, the scientific study of mental processes and behavior is initially taught at Elmira College with a broad focus, by examining key theories and research methods. Students are then able to concentrate on specific topics within the discipline, such as lifespan development, clinical and counseling practice, social and cognitive processes, and business and consumer behavior. They also have opportunities to pursue their own research interests and may be able to attend professional conferences to share their work.

Are you interested in exploring how social institutions such as the family, religion, or the media shape human interaction? Or do you want to learn how human beings organize their ways of life? In this interdisciplinary major, students examine the basic concepts of sociology — the study of how groups of people live in society and how they are influenced by social institutions. They will also develop an understanding and appreciation for different cultures around the world — the focus of anthropology. Our joint program emphasizes work on social inequality (race, class, and gender), the impact of globalization on society and the growing culture of global capitalism. Students take four foundational courses in the program before concentrating on either Sociology or Anthropology.

To further their study of cultures different from their own, majors are strongly encouraged to participate in the Junior Year Abroad program. Recent graduates have gone on to successful careers in social and human services, international non-profits, social justice work, education, government, and tourism.

Students in the Speech and Hearing program at Elmira College are preparing for graduate level study and, ultimately for careers as speech-language pathologists or audiologists. Speech-language pathologists work in a variety of settings (hospitals, nursing homes, schools, private practices, and health departments) to identify and treat developmental and acquired communication disorders, including speech, language, voice, and swallowing disorders. Audiologists also work in various settings (hospitals, medical practices, schools, and private practice) evaluating hearing and balance problems, fitting hearing aids, and counseling clients about their hearing losses. In addition to the diagnosis and treatment of communication disorders, both audiologists and speech-language pathologists are involved in prevention activities.

The Speech and Hearing program at Elmira College offers two majors: the Speech-Language Disabilities major and the Speech and Hearing major. Both majors prepare students for graduate study and follow the guidelines of the national certifying organization, the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association (ASHA). Both majors involve students in audiology and speech-language pathology observations and clinical practice at our campus clinic. All students participate in several terms of clinical practicum at our Speech and Hearing Clinic where they gain a considerable amount of hands-on experience with clients presenting communication problems. The Speech-Language Disabilities major includes a 12-credit student teaching practicum in an area school district which prepares students for the initial teaching certificate in speech-language disabilities in New York State. The Speech and Hearing major includes a 6-credit internship which may be completed in the Elmira area or in the student’s hometown in a variety of clinical, educational, or medical settings.

Elmira College has an active chapter of the National Student Speech Language, and Hearing Association (NSSLHA), an ASHA-affiliated organization for undergraduate and graduate students interested in the fields of speech-language pathology and audiology. In addition, Elmira College has two clubs of interest to Speech and Hearing students, the League of Intern Speech Pathologists and Silent Voices.

Honors Program

Student Research

The Elmira College Honors Program is designed to provide outstanding students with a challenging, stimulating, and supportive academic experience. Participants in this selective program take challenging courses taught by some of Elmira’s leading professors in a seminar format, including special Honors sections of College Composition and the Core Program during Fall and Winter Terms of their freshman year.

In addition, Honors Program students gain special access to academic and social events including opportunities to meet with visiting artists and renowned scholars, field trips related to class material, and receptions held at the President’s Home.

Students are expected to earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or above and complete at least 12 credit hours of academic work during Fall and Winter Terms and six-credit hours during Term III. Students who successfully complete the program receive special recognition on their transcripts.

All interested high school seniors must be accepted for admission to the College and must submit an Honors Program application no later than February 1st for Fall Term admission. Students are admitted to the program based on their high school grades, SAT or ACT scores, and responses on the Honors Program application. Admission to the program is highly competitive.

Perhaps one of the biggest advantages of the small college environment offered at EC is the opportunity to engage in scholarly research with a faculty member in your field of interest. Elmira College faculty work closely with students every day. Upper level research classes in some majors give students the chance to do work in experimental psychology, qualitative sociology, field work in anthropology, advanced archival research in history, and research in biology and chemistry. In addition, students can elect to write a college thesis, working closely with a faculty advisor for an academic year to produce an individual special research project.

In the sciences and math, students have the opportunity to work with faculty on summer research projects. While on campus for the summer, these students work one-on-one with a faculty advisor on basic and applied research. The work that comes out of this summer research is often presented by students at professional conferences or even published in

peer-reviewed academic journals. Many students who do summer research go on to be admitted to excellent graduate schools or medical schools.

Funding is available for our students to travel to research conferences to present their work to a national audience. In this past year, students have presented their original research at national conferences in Biology, Chemistry, English Literature, Psychology, and Sociology.

To showcase the excellent research our students complete, Elmira College hosts an annual Student Research Conference each May. Students present their research to the public, and the top research projects in each field are awarded prizes by the President. This work sets EC students ahead of others who may be applying for prestigious fellowships and graduate school positions.
