The original school was opened in 1956 as the first American-curriculum boarding school in Europe, and its name – The American School in Switzerland (TASIS) – extended to the subsequent campuses and summer programs begun elsewhere in Europe. An independent, coeducational boarding and day school enrolling students in nursery through twelfth grades, TASIS England was opened in 1976 on a 46-acre campus in Thorpe, Surrey, 18 miles southwest of London. Mission TASIS is a family of international schools that welcomes young people from all nationalities to an educational community which fosters a passion for excellence along with mutual respect and understanding. Consistent with the vision of its founder, M. Crist Fleming, TASIS is committed to transmitting the heritage of Western civilization and world cultures: the creations, achievements, traditions, and ideals from the past that offer purpose in the present and hope for the future. Affiliation TASIS The American School in England is a member of The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS), the Cum Laude Society, and the London International Schools Association (LISA). Student Body TASIS England students represent 56 nationalities and many of our students are dual nationals. In our student body, 64% are American or Canadian, 17% are European, 11% are British, 8% are Asian. Among our boarding students, 5% are British. The majority of the boarding students come from native and expatriate families throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Most day students come from expatriate families affiliated with corporations based in the greater London area. Core Component: Theory of Knowledge International Section courses are offered in English (all levels), Biology, US History, and World History. EAL Proficiency is equivalent to the third- level foreign language proficiency in the graduation requirements.
